Here's a band that has picked up a notable amount of steam over the past few years; Red Album was generally received warmly, building up perfectly to the staggering amounts of praise for Blue Record. The pressure is on. How do they live up to it? By throwing us a goddamn curve-ball, is what.

Aww man I know. I am a big sludge fan too. But the "twangy" thing I cannot get past! Same thing with the band Tephra.

I preffer my sludge like the way it used to be, filthy. I actually haven't tried a lot of Baroness simply because of lack of interest. I think I have some of their stuff in my computer though so I might check their stuff at some point. But I doubt I would go apeshit about them.

Hmmm by "twangy" do you mean the noise rock(The Jesus Lizard) bass tone? Coz I don't really see that in Baroness.

The electric guitar sound, not the bass. "Ner Ner Ner" or something like that, pronouncing "Ner Ner Ner" in an obnoxious way. It's hard to put in words.

I dunno, I dig it the more I listen to it.

Saw John Baizley's solo acoustic stuff when he came over here. "Collapse" is an amazing song. So keen for these albums.

I've liked all of Baroness' prior releases, but this shit sucks. It's dance sludge rock. Except it didn't make me want to dance. One and done for me.

Finally listening to Yellow... So far so good! Surely all of the silly Nickelback comparisons will be forgotten once people listen to the album.
Yup, all done, and nothing resembling Baroness of old. The first two songs are among the heaviest on here. Excellent album.

Damn but this album is dull... Collection of songs perfect for the radio, or in general without balls. 6/10 and big disappointment. I wasn't able to listen in one sitting because I fell asleep.

After giving it twice a spin to Yellow, it came out be a great stuff. Pretty enjoyable.

PS: "Take my Bones away" vocals however belongs to Chad tbh.

Alternative, grungy rock perfectly suited for an NHL video game soundtrack.

Which equals quite a horrible listening experience overall. Unless I'm editing rosters or trying to ship out a first-round pick and an inflated salary from my back end for Stamkos then there is absolutely no reason for this album to exist. Zero creativity, zero identity, zero passion, zero soul. Just the most straightforward stripped down radio rock going, comparable to the likes of a more "atmospheric" Nickelback or a slightly more catchy Default. At this point, a generous 4/10.

4/10 is way too low for this huge disappointment, a 6/10 would be more in place, because the music isn't technically bad at all, it's just soft and super sludge light. but then again Troy has the tendency to overreact when grading stuff when he dislikes it, but also when he likes it as for him saying it has zero identity. Nope it still has loads fo identity cause it is still immeidately recognizable as Baroness.
If I were you I would check it out for yourself instead of not listening to it because others deem it a disappointment.

The entire double album can be checked out here

Probably, that's why he too overreacted when he reviewed the album of his own band.
