Well, I really tried to give Metalcore a fair chance here. Can't get over the generic "breakdowns" and shitty autotuned cleans. Is it that hard to be original?

29.06.2014 - 18:48 Rating: 6 Written by Rsrdaman on 26.06.2014 at 11:31 Just to play the devil's advocate and give voice to my usual peeve against the total misuse of words like "generic" and "original", can you explain to me how "breakdowns" and "autotuned cleans" are any less original, compared to, say as if they used the same kind of death growls any dm band under the sun used since the 80s, which is "apparantly" more original than this. Of course, this album is not original by any means, but neither is pretty much most other bands tons of people wank over here. So in the end it boils down to you NOT LIKING this album, and nothing to do with originality. It is just saying "this album isn't original" is an objective qualifier as opposed to a subjective one, thus it makes any "unoriginal" -core album an easy target, as it attempts to paint it in an "objectively bad" light.

29.06.2014 - 21:12 Rating: 2 Written by Uldreth on 29.06.2014 at 18:48 First of all playing devils advocate, would be to say you don't like -core music, which you obviously do. Secondly, comparing what I said to Death Growls is a false analogy. To compare a vocal style to secondary backing vocals is not a fair comparison. One is the genre-defining aspect to the music, the other is an additional aspect akin to a guitar solo, a transition riff, an orchestral piece, etc. Very large amounts of metalcore uses the same "breakdowns" (as they can't really sound any different) and is one of the laziest music elements I have ever seen, and is highly unoriginal, Miss May I not deferring from this. The same goes with "autotuned cleans", their overuse is very obvious. So yes, in the end it boils down to me not liking this album because of it being unoriginal.

29.06.2014 - 22:08 Written by Rsrdaman on 27.06.2014 at 08:22 I don't like to get too nerdy with genres but I don't think The Faceless is metalcore. I listened to some of Planetary Duality and it was more tech death with maybe a little deathcore influence, and from what I have heard they are heading in a more tech death direction. I think their first album was more along the lines of straight up deathcore too.

03.07.2014 - 01:53 Rating: 6 Written by Rsrdaman on 29.06.2014 at 21:12 There is no such thing as main vocal style. My question still stands, if they replaced all the cleans with death growls, would you consider it more original, despite the fact that growls often much sounds the same and they have been in existence in the same form longer than autocleans? Secondly, there is way more to breaks than that, though I will agree that this band does not use them effectively. Thirdly, if you were bothered by genericness and unoriginality, you would not have Amon Amarth in your band list, as it is a textbook case of genericity and unoriginality. What you say to that?

03.07.2014 - 08:57 Rating: 2 Written by Uldreth on 03.07.2014 at 01:53 There is no such thing as a main vocal style? That really makes me want to write you off as a troll, but i'll just assume you're being ignorant. A band's main vocal style is what is most often used in their songs. I'll take the band Agalloch as an example. They are listed as Atmospheric Black Metal. Agalloch often includes clean vocals in many of their songs, but a [i]majority[i] are sang in black metal "shrieks". If you were to say they band has no main vocal style, they loose their entire genre of black metal (Yes, I know genres do not solely depend on vocals, but replace John Haughm's vocals with Mikael Åkerfeldt's vocals and It wouldn't be labeled as black metal anymore). Additionally, I never said there is a problem with clean vocals, I was talking about them in the shitty autotuned sense, which is all too prevalent in many bands. For breakdowns, you know, I've never heard a good breakdown, all the one's I've heard are basically the same old chugging. If you'd link me so some 'good' ones, I'd appreciate it. Regarding Amon Amarth, please do tell me how Amon Amarth's With Oden On Our Side is generic and unoriginal in a musical sense. Bringing a band that is completely irrelevant to the topic and raising a straw man argument isn't helping with your case.
