Biography
Of course, the so-called black metal scene is overladen with way too many bands. Compared to that, there are few reasons to form another one.
Still, FERNDAL had good reasons for starting out in mid 2016. One of them is their unique sonic world, drawing inspiration from sources ranging from Bach and Dvorak to Beethoven and Arvo Pärt, from ?Panzerfaust" to ?Arntor" and from the ice-age remnants reaching from Scandinavia to their home area, the myth-enshrouded Münsterland. The combination of five individual musicians, being the two main composers/lyricists Sorathiel (bass and vocals) and Lestaya (violoncello), flanked by Alboin (drums) and Abarus (guitars) - also being members of EÏS - and Sethras (guitars), leads to a black metal sound you surely haven't heard (yet). FERNDAL not only entrench the violoncello as an equally deployed instrument between two distorted guitars, they seemlessly blend in premonitions from ancient scandinavian folk, baroque grace or romantic melancholy in between a veil of pure black metal aggression.
Apart from the aural aspect of the band, the quintet offers lyrics being far away from any occult, orthodox or whatever cliché topics. Instead, Sorathiel and Lestaya digged deep to find fitting metaphoric words about them (self-)reflecting man's relation to life, death, self-awareness or true individual freedom. FERNDAL use both a clean and harsh male voice to pitch the right tone for every word.
Being a focussed band and an exceptional specimen in Germany's black metal circus, FERNDAL quickly attracted a bunch of potential partners. Einheit Produktionen, as Germany's leading force in tasteful underground pagan/black metal, won the bid and will release the band's self-titled debut album on 21st of April, 2017. ?Ferndal" features seven tracks, among them four metallic longtracks and a classically orchestrated version of Windir's ?Arntor", has been mixed and mastered by Markus Skroch (Hel, Ash of Ashes) at Kalthallen Studio, and is adored by an artwork drawn by renowned Spanish artist Norax (Lux Divina). FERNDAL have been invited to present their songs on different live occassions, among them Ragnarök and Darktroll Festival, before working on material for their second album.
