The Final Experiment was originally titled Ayreon: The Final Experiment, with no artist listed, but upon re-release, the title was changed to The Final Experiment, and the artist was changed to Ayreon.

The Final Experiment is often mentioned as one of the first metal operas and a reviver of the rock opera genre.

Due to its particular nature, Ayreon never play live; however, several Ayreon songs were included in two live albums by other Lucassen's bands: "Live On Earth" by Star One and "Live In The Real World" by Stream Of Passion.

In album booklets, Arjen always tries to not thank his brother Gjalt Lucassen, in a jokingly manner - either by misspelling his name, or by calling him "a certain family member" (The Theory Of Everything) or just by running out of typing space on a page (The Human Equation). This also applies to his other projects - Star One, Guilt Machine and the recent solo album.

There is a part in the song "Age Of Shadows" from the album 01011001 where Anneke Van Giersbergen sings zeros and ones. If you take all of the zeros and ones and turn them into numbers, you get a binary code. If you convert this binary code to ASCII characters, you get the words "Help, help."

Arjen used programmed drums on "The Charm Of The Seer", a track from The Final Experiment. He did it because the song was written after the drums had been recorded.

"01011001" is a number written in binary base. If you convert it to the base 10, you will find the number 89. If you look at the ASCII table you can see that the number 89 corresponds to the letter "Y", which is also the name of the first disc.
