It's official, May is definitely "metal massacre month" as the bad news continues to pile up. Just this morning atmospheric sludge/post-metallers Isis have called it a day. In a lengthy "good night!" message on their MySpace, the band writes:

"Isis has reached an end. It's hard to try to say it in any delicate way, and it is a truth that is best spoken plainly. This end isn't something that occurred over night and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band. Simply put, Isis has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say. In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close.

We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure Isis would never fall victim to that syndrome. We've had a much longer run than we ever expected we would and accomplished a great deal more than we ever imagined possible. We never set any specific goals when the band was founded other than to make the music we wanted to hear and to play (and to stay true to that ideal), so everything else that has come along the long and winding path has been an absolute gift.

As with any momentous life-changing decision (which this certainly is for the 5 of us), we feel a very dynamic range of emotions about this and cannot express all of it within the space of a few sentences, and perhaps it's best to do what we've always done in and let our music speak for us. It is and has been the truest expression of who we are as a collective and in some ways who we are as individuals for the 13 years in which we've been together.

The last and perhaps most important thing we might say in relation to all this is how grateful we are for the people that have supported us over the years. It is a lengthy list that would include those who put out our records, those that played on them and put them to tape, the many bands with whom we shared the stage, all of our family, friends and companions who supported us in our individual lives and thus made it possible for us to continue on in the band, and most importantly those who truly listened to our music whether in recorded form or by coming to out to our shows (or both). It is quite true that we would never have done what we have without those people, that is many of you who are reading this. Our words can never fully express what we feel, but we hope that our music and the efforts made to bring it into being can serve as a more proper expression of gratitude for this life and for everyone in it. Thank you.

In more immediate and practical terms the tour we are about to embark upon is indeed our last. We are hoping that these final live rituals can help us bring a close to the life of this band in a celebratory and reverent way, and also provide us with a chance to say goodbye to many of those that have supported us over the years. While there is a measure of sadness that comes with the passing of this band, we hope that the final days can be joyous ones during which any and all that wish to come and join us will do so. It seems fitting that the last show of the tour and of our active existence will take place in Montreal, the site of the very first Isis show in 1997 (though that was an unintentional move when booking the show initially).

After the tour we also plan to follow through with other projects set in motion some time ago - pursuing the completion of a final EP, compiling live audio and visual material for future releases, and generally doing whatever we can to make our music available for as long as there are people who wish to hear it."

A shame, although they explained it pretty well...while I'm not a rabid fan or anything I do quite like what I've heard, and I agree with the principle of not "pushing past the point of a dignified death", so as such I'm not overly distraught by this news. They have created a large body of work that they can be extremely proud of, and have left an exemplary legacy that others can admire and aspire to. Kudos to them for having the integrity and balls to bow out at (or at least near) the top of their game. Cheers to Isis for the great tunes and for giving me and (I'm sure) many others much to think about concerning life, the universe and METAL.

If its coz they have "said everything they want to say" then they should have just put the band on hiatus and pursue other projects. I don't think we have heard the last of this band..

You may be right, but with respect you (and I) don't know what goes on behind the scenes, they say that this has been a long time coming etc. so I'm not so sure...they don't seem like the types to make a hasty decision, at least from where I'm standing. Who knows, hopefully there will be some future projects from band members, but this statement had an air of finality to it I believe.

I do imagine that this band will perform again in the future. If not a full reunion, at least for some one off events. Just about every band that calls it quits amicably such as this does. In no way do I mean that in a mocking or disrespectful manner. Good music, I hope I can make one of the Boston shows.

Even though I think they did a mature move artistically wise, I'm sure that they are still capable of producing more quality music. But in the end it's their choice, hopefully they'll regret their decision and reunite Their discography remains impressive, unforgettable and unique.

Actually one of the better goodbye messages I've read from a band. There just isn't anything left for them to do anymore without feeling like they're repeating themselves.

The tour is just a nice way to celebrate their time together over the years. Good for them - bad for the fans.

Crap.

I start listening to the band. Enjoy it immensely. Add it as a favourite. Promise myself to attend their next concert in the country. They disband.

And to think, at the beginning of the new year I prayed for Metal to become more popular this year.

This is a HORRIBLE year!

That totally ruined my week, if not the whole month. Haven't had the chance to see them live. This sucks big, big time.
But, nonetheless, Aaron Turner will surely provide something promising in the future. The man is a workhorse and will not idely sit by, I hope.

Just ''oh fuck'' represents what I think.. one of my favorites bands calling it quits...

Still, I would prefer a change of style under the name of Isis than a split-up... No more airplane jumper without parachute feeling in songs for me...

Judas fucking priest...what the hell is going on around here? I only recently discovered them (the last year or so). Arguably my favorite band, on the heels of releasing one of the greatest albums ever, I havn't seen them live! I wish them all the luck in the world...

...but right now...I AM STUNNED!

I certainly did not expect this, but I can respect this. Isis has proven to me that they are a worthy band. I own their album In the Absence of Light, which is a great album. RIP Isis.

This is surprising. I just got their last album and I would never think it would be the last. But there you go, it's life, we never know what's around the corner.

Of course they come nowhere near me on their final tour.... sigh.

Man, this band is amazing, but it is respectable to call it quits before they repeat themselves and end up like the rolling stones. Panopticon will always be one of my favorite albums

Final show in Montreal, oh yeah !
I rather they stop playing as a band if they're left uninspired. Most of their music was great excluding their last album which dragged on a little, imo. Maybe that was an indicator.

"We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure Isis would never fall victim to that syndrome"

Great mentality. I know nothing of this band but these guys won my respect by saying this, as long as they really mean it.

If only lots of old bands (Metallica, Manowar and Iron Maiden- and many others- instantly come to my mind) could read these words and understand them.

I re-read this every now and then when I binge on Isis again. Never ceases to tear me up a bit. It's strange reading something like this about a band that's meant so much to me in my life. Reads something like a suicide letter.
