"King For A Day" was awesome, though I can see why some people would have had a problem with it, because of it's constant genre hopping. But for me, it is brilliant. "Album Of The Year", not so much. It has some great songs, but it is a bit patchy, and is probably the weakest of all the Mike Patton-era albums.

Still, FNM making new music is very exciting news, because if anything can be virtually guaranteed, it's that trying to predict how it will sound is practically impossible.

My problem with it. It's a schizophrenic thing to listen to and there's virtually no atmosphere/vibe.

It is certainly a schizophrenic album, and I think this is something which will either endear you to it, or turn you away from it. I actually love how it can go (for example) from the smooth, jazz-funk of "Evidence", straight into the wild, over the top mania of "The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies". I do see what you're saying to a certain extent, as it does lack the cohesion of say, "Angel Dust", but I've always found it a delight to listen to, and it is a great album to me.

I think this is the scary bit, especially given their patchiness later on in the career.

Also lack of Jim Martin or even Trey Spruance will hinder them in terms of guitar crunch and song writing. Jon Hudson's work on Album of the Year isn't exactly something to write home about.

Well, my fave FNM album "Angel Dust" features hardly any songwriting from Jim Martin at all. In fact, he only had a hand in writing two songs from that album. It's also the case that Jim was disillusioned and unhappy with the direction the band went in on that album, and that was a major factor in his exit from the band.

So long as Gould, Patton, and Bottum handle the majority of the songwriting, I have confidence that a new FNM album can be great.
