Porcupine Tree - Fans Advised Not To Tape Upcoming Shows

Porcupine Tree will embark on their only 2006 mid September till November. The format of the show this time around will be a little different, with half the show dedicated to material from the new live DVD "Arriving Somewhere....", but the other half being brand new, as yet unrecorded material, something that will allow these works in progress to evolve as the tour goes on.

In view of the fact that we live in the age of file sharing and download culture, the band are asking for consideration from all show attendees in *not* attempting to record the show in any way. While the band try to discourage taping of its shows, they do acknowledge that there are those fans who like to document and share PT live performances, and as such they have a fairly liberal policy with trading of recordings among the PT fan community, as long as no money is exchanged between parties. But in this case they hope that fans will understand their feeling that people should experience this new music for the first time in performance, and not in the form of unauthorised audience recordings. It's one thing to hear a substandard live recording of a piece already familiar, but quite another to hear something new for the first time in such poor circumstances, so if you are unable to get along to a show this time, please be patient and wait for the album versions!

Now the ugly part... as there are bound to be some fans who even after reading this will feel compelled to record the show, the band regret that there will be a greater effort made to stop illegal recording on this tour, and a zero tolerance policy as regards anyone found doing so. If anyone is discovered recording a show their recording media will be confiscated, and they will be escorted from the venue, missing the rest of the show with no refund forthcoming. The band therefore ask anyone that had planned to tape these shows to reconsider in deference to the band's feelings on this matter, and your own enjoyment of the show.

The band really do appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this. This is quite an exciting experiment for them and they look forward to seeing you on the tour!

This is great, more bands should point out this.
If you get your hands on a recording, don't spread it further!

It's understandable i suppose.

and not to go off-topic but, though this is a good band, they are more Indie Rock so why is it that they are featured on this site?

It'll only be a matter of time before that reverse psychology kicks in. When people are told not to do something, they end up doing it anyway. That's just the way it is. Tell the fans to not record the shows and they'll end up recording it anyway, all thanks to that brilliant reverse psychology.

This is stupid. And what if someone can't see them live (like me)?

@ danzig1 they played psiheldelic rock; now they play a lil heavier stuff.

If they don't want money to be in it, they should officially allow the filesharing, just like several other bands do - have a central place where ALL the bootlegs can be downloaded, so that the bootleggers who want to make money from the band won't get anything. With a more repressive policy towards bootleggers, it will be harder to record stuff and thus the prices for bootlegs will rise, so that the bootleggers in the end make more money. Or to put it differently, they raise the demand and lower the supply.

The statement is controversial and no doubt demand and the price for bootlegs will rise if they are really sold and not shared as the band says they encourage. However, I do feel that bootlegs generally spoil the experience. Low quality picture is usually acceptable but low quality sound kicks below the belt and spoils everything.

This is stupid. And what if someone can't see them live (like me)?

well you could also just wait untill the album is released (like the band suggests) then you'll have those songs, but with good sound quality, also the news-article says that they might still change the songs, so if you wait a while you'll not only get those songs, but you'll get imrpoved versions of them with good production

So, why do we go to concerts anyway if we can just buy their albums?

There's more to a concert than just the sound. If I were you I had rather recommended him their DVD

That will never work with PT, they have like the best production you can get, and you will never be able to create a better sound with a tape recorder... not when it comes to Porcupine Tree.

Hmm... so you are planning to bring advanced audio recording equipment? Whatever, I've got no idea how that kinda things work... but it won't outshine the studio album, that's for sure.

Yes, digital recording equipment. it's about as big as your fist. you put it on your head, and make exeptional recordings. and no, it doesn't outshine the studio. but it does some live recordings. and stuff what PPT plays in the concerts above, well, it's golden. it's like hearing the studio rehersals.

PS i never recorded a bootleg in my life, nor have such an equipment.
