Turisas. Although I actually didn't mind Alestorm's newest, I've always enjoyed Turisas.

I love both bands, but Turisas's epic feel takes the cake over Alestorm's gritty pirate feel. Both have accordions, but only Turisas has violin

Original? I have to disagree: there is nothing original about Alestorm. They irritate me... it's a typical example of "jumping on the bandwagon" with folk/viking metal and trying to cash in on the success of the genre. They're cheap. Their music, lyrics, and style are all cheap - and without an ounce of originality to be found.

That's true. There are a shite load of viking bands and while I think that Turisas is talented, they just don't stand out as THAT original. Alestorm isn't original either really but at least they don't take themselves very seriously either and they make me laugh. Turisas appeals to the female element more I think, which isn't a bad thing, we need more women into metal these days, but the battle of the bands obviously continues. Turisas actually sounds like Bal-Sagoth sometimes.

I started off disliking both these bands, but Alestorm won me round after I saw them live a few times, and Turisas have won me over with their new album. I'd say Turisas at the moment.

I love Turisas - they're one of the first bands to get me into Viking Metal but I've enjoyed Alestorm for longer.

Hard one, but I like Turisas more, I enjoy their music more and I think they have more stage presence and are way better live. Especially with all the folk instruments and their get-up.

I agree. Turisas have distinguished themselves in the genre more genuinely i think, while Alestorm has always seemed like a gimmick and cheesy. I feel like Turisas truly passionate about their music and band, and Alestorm is just doing it for show and attention. If you just dabble in folk metal i dont blame you for liking Alestorm, but as for myself(pretty deep into folk metal)

i dont even really consider Alestorm part of the folk metal scene, they are more like the DragonForce of Folk metal.

If you want true Pirate Metal (not just the gimmick) i would reccommend Carach Angren's album "Death Came Through A Phantom Ship" Its genuine music and very unique symphonic black metal pirate-themed concept album.

Just to be honest - Turisas isnt any breakthrough and isnt original either

Yeah they werent the first Folk metal band but in the already established folk metal genre they stand out with originality. There the only folk metal band to use the symphonic element to the extent that they do, and yeah many other metal bands have been using this symphonic idea, but Turisas has taken it a step further in the metal genre as a whole with the new album, to where it could easily be mistaken for some sort of "Heavy Metal Musical" rather than just a symphonic metal song. So while there not the first to come up with these ideas, they are definately taking these ideas and concepts to new bounds, which is original to an extent.

On the otherhand Alestorm is original to extent bc they are taking the folk metal genre and twisting to a fully pirated theme. So both deserve credit for at least a small amount of originality for furthering ideas that had only scratched the surface previously.
My problem with Alestorm though, is that it feels incredibly gimmicky and half-assed. You can tell from the quality of the music that they made the band pirate themed simply for the fact that it an all pirate all the time band hadnt been made before. which makes the music have no integrity, and nothing more than a gimmick. So yeah Alestorm is something fun to show your friends but its not something i have a whole lot of respect for compared to Turisas, whom i have tremendous respect for.
