After the slight disappointment of "Obsolete", Fear Factory had to prove there status as heaviest industrial metal-band with the release of Digital Mortality, or "Digimortal" for short. With a huge story running through the album, it's the music that matters most in this case. They managed to put down some really fine tracks, as opener "What Will Become?", or the new single "Linchpin" and the simply brilliant "Damaged", but it's the new approach to some songs that actually scared me. Take the length of most songs for example: most songs are a meaningless three minutes each. And that's exactly what makes a song fine, but not perfect. You're just thinking "Oh man, here comes that wonderful drumming again", whilst the song is already finished, you know what I mean. You just sit and hope the song will keep on going for another minute.

Oke then, but it isn't all about time, it's the songs that count. The sound is the thing that matters, and although Fear Factory will always sounds like Fear Factory, the songs are more open and easier to play. Burton doesn't use his variety of voices anymore, but chooses to use his 'normal' voice more and more, on tracks like "Invisible Wounds" and "Hurt Conveyor". It's a point of view I haven't heard of Burton before, but I must admit it's nice to hear too. At the end, this album is better than "Obsolete", but if you don't know whether to buy it or not, I'd say you ought to buy "Demanufacture" instead.
