What genres out there do you find completely useless? I think the whole point of this thread back in the old MS was not coming out and saying what you hate about current genres. The point was to talk about sub-genre names that people just make up due to lyrical content, image, etc...

Well some genres that I have seen pop up in some music magazines get their names from a record label. For example the genre Hydracore which apparently refers to quite a few bands which are on the Hydrahead record label. All those bands play either emocore or mathcore so why the hell call it Hydracore, it's like calling most bands on RoadRunner/RoadRacer Roadmetal.

This is about stupid genre NAMES And also please go back to metal 1.01 because nu-metal is a form of metal. You might not like it or maybe even hate it with all your guts but metal it is nonetheless. I even hate it to death but still regard it is as metal for it is a metal off-shoot and metal in its core.

Yes, I hate it when people make up genres, especially those that are made up on lyrical content. One I must mention that has not been said is pirate metal, apparently suited for bands with a 'pirate sound' (which really could be anything) and pirate lyrics, such as Running Wild.

I believe that the whole point of using sub genres to define a band is that you can give a precise description of a general mood and sound of music. Some bands that could enter a more general genre might not have in their sound only the characteristics from that genre. So when you're talking of a band that has a unique sound, you don't feel like a bigger genre really fits to describe it. Therefore, the subgenres are there only to give an idea of what to expect. I think anyone should take this whole subgenre thing loosely as it is only meant to give a loose idea of a band's sound and is not meant to be a precise and official categorisation.

Damn man, you should read what you write (even if it IS copy-paste from some stupid-ass place that doesn't bother with checking if a genre is already up or not) Anyways...all them "atmospheric" subgenres make me wonder. What exactly makes a band atmospheric? Shape of Despair plays great atmospheric music, yet it still is a funeral doom band. Tiamat likewise. Not funeral doom, but...why do people even use the word atmospheric as a sub-genre? Damnet, even Nile can be concidered atmospheric from time to time.

Oh, oops...i left some in...Like death power, death doom, technical death, gothenburg, avant garde (while it could stand for a genre of it's own, i don't think any of those bands really implements the avant gardistic music too well). But this time Horlequism, i found it hard to understand wether you were joking or not (i apoligize for that), cos there's progressive in there and also death and black metal. Surely those genres deserve their name! (and no i wasn't joking at all myself)....buuut, to fill in some gaps to prove myself: Black metal: i seriously think that this genre is not stupid. At least nothing better goes there. Folk metal: perhaps not black folk, but the regular folk metal does so exist. Melodic etc black metal: well, black is such a varied genre that one or two subgenres should apply Death metal: (there might be this certain bug with the forum, cos i'm pretty sure i didn't write brutal death twice) i think death metal is also a whole genre on it's own. And at least the melodic sub-genre should remain Doom metal: this one totally deserves all the sub-genres it has and i know that since i'm starting the study of doom metal for my music class. I got about a year to do it. Metalcore: well...what other word to use to describe those bands? Industrial: right where it should be Progressive: well...that's your area. If you think it's a useless genre, then fine by me. That's all i have to say and i pretty much realized that you weren't probably joking. Writing with "analizing" the stuff at the same time helps me greatly.

I hate "female-fronted metal." What's next, "Male-fronted metal"? I'd like to see a poll in the arena for best male-fronted band. I understand grouping soprano-fronted bands together in the symphonic genre but just because your singer has boobs doesn't make the MUSIC sound any different. Thank you, rant off.

bodom metal. perhaps you have heard of it, its used by people who dont know how to classify children of bodom. thankfully this site got it right in putting them under extreme power metal, simply power metal with harsh vocals.

I find it stupid to create a new genre based on the bands influences. For example,I feel annoyed when I listen to the term ''Tolkien Metal''. I just wonder, if someone created a metal band influenced by chickens,we would have a Chicken Metal genre?

Rakoth metal - The type of metal the band Rakoth does... It's completely stupid, not to mention megalomaniac to give the name of your band to a sort of metal which apprently you created - and this is not Rakoth's case...IMO, they didn't create anything sooooo very special...

19.05.2006 - 01:52 Written by Susan on 17.05.2006 at 21:55 I agree, it's stupid. I think it's because just in the recent years women have started appearing in great amounts into the metal circle as artists. But I still don't understand why "female-fronted metal" has become such a popular expression.

@Immortal Plague. Supposively. Read the post above your own. Is Viking Metal a stupid genre? I like the sound of it, but it would hold bands such as Manegarm & Amon Amarth, which are too different too be under one flag.

there are many sub genres of metal that are fronted by females though...it's just as useless as saying male-fronted metal...Aghora is female-fronted and they're progressive metal...Arch Enemy is female-fronted and they're death/thrash metal...Lacuna Coil, etc, etc...are there any unique musical elements that should seperate any female-fronted band into it's own sub-genre of metal? except for the female vocals, no...

Examples of viking metal would be: Tyr, Bathory (BFD, Hammerheart, etc.), Borknagar, and Einherjer
