Since I've just finished submitting pictures of their albums, I might as well start a thread about this great folk metal band, Skyclad!

Those pioneers of Folk Metal are currently working on a new album, which was supposed to be released in fall 2006 (that's what was initially planned even though nothing's sure now that Black Lotus Records (their label) has run out of business).

So, what do you think about them? I personally respect them a lot as fathers of Folk Metal, and I simply worship some of their albums (haven't listened to their whole discography yet). For example Oui Avantgarde A Chance is one of their finest works IMO, a folk metal masterpiece Other great albums are (IMO) A Semblance Of Normality, Folkemon or Vintage Whine.

Another important aspect of their music (apart from the folk instruments and atmosphere) is their lyrics: they deal with a wide variety of real-world themes (as well as more personal issues) including poverty, drugs, environmentalism, politics, urban decay, paganism, society and commercialism. Really thoughtful lyrics, with puns and wordplays... It's definitely worth paying attention to them

So, what do you guys (and gals ) think about them??

I'm enjoying them quite well at the moment! Folk Metal was a genre I hadn't heard much of other than a few songs from Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, and Finntroll. It's great how they throw in accordians and violins, it's pretty catchy in a refreshing way. I have a bunch of their albums on my PC, I just haven't had the time to hear them in their entirety yet. Their lyrics are, as you said Sekhmet, quite witty. I liked "Penny Dreadful" for that reason.

I've noticed, while reading again the whole comics section, that some Headbanged episodes were titled after some Skyclad's songs (pointless information but it shows CollisionInMind's great references )

Heard their first album a couple of weeks ago...it was ok, but not an album I would spend my money on. The lyrics was hillarius but the music wasn't that good and boring at times.

I usually can't stand Folk Metal because of the stupid lyrics, but Skyclad are an exception to the rule, along with bands like Subway To Sally, In Extremo and Suidakra...

I really enjoy Prince Of The Povery Line... a very fresh album with good concepts behind.

Walking my personal Calvary mile to a do-it-yourself crucifixion,
It's a kingdom of clowns wearing martyrdom's frown -
I must fight for my hammer and nails,
We're an endless procession of lost, dispossessed unbelievers -
Whose prayers go unheard and unanswered,
(unheard and unanswered like junk mail for Jesus).

My favourite album by Skyclad is Irrational Anthems, to able to mix folk and metal elements is very hard, they do it very well.

Lirycs are really good, not the usual "violence, sex and beer" stuff, they are one of the few metal bands that use to write lirycs using a creative english.

As I wrote in the review, Prince Of The Poverty Line is my favorite album. Favorite above absolutely everything.

Oui Avantgarde A Chance is good but not that much to my tastes. I really prefer The Answer Machine, or the older albums (Wayward Sons, A burnt Offering and Silent Whales)

These three are my favourites as well but I would like to add Jonah's Ark and Prince Of The Poverty Line as well. After those five Skyclad started rehashing their songs way too much IMO. Their work is still alright, but the first five really do shine the most for me and of those five I prefer the first two the most cause they are their thrashiest work reminding me a lot of Sabbat.

One of my favourite Skyclad couplets is this one, from 'Polkageist!'...

"Juice of fruit beyond forbidden
dripping slowly from her fingers,
she took my hand and led me
to that place where cunning lingers."

It doesn't appear to be very witty, but read the last line aloud, and if you're still stuck, look here. Seriously, I took about 5 minutes to sober up after reading that for the first time...Walkyier is a true bard...just a pity he's not doing anything in music anymore.

Surely are one of my favorite Folk Metal bands. I really enjoy their style, and I also think their latest vocalist is really good. I'm currently listening a lot to the "No Daylight.. Nor Heeltaps" compilation cd, on which they re-recorded some of their classic songs. It's a really great album.

The first five albums ? Yes, the golden era, without doubt.
About Sabbat, I agree that Wayward Sons is reminiscent of Sabbat, but with A Burnt Offering they already sounded quite different IMO.

I'm glad that I am not the only one to think so. I really hope they keep chugging along. I have tried to get the management of ProgPower festival to invite them to no luck.

I saw them first time a few months ago, open air in Germany in a totally shrunk line up of three and a half or so as their instruments were lost on the airport and the violin player (?) was stuck in a hospital .. still they made an enjoyable show.

Although Skyclad were/are an awesome band I wouldn't put them on the bill of ProgPower cause Skyclad will stick ouyt like a sore thumb with all the Progressive bands there. And I doubt that most of the audience ProgPower attracts will enjoy Skyclad.

Skyclad are very rapidly becoming one of my favourite bands. I really like the early, thrashier stuff as well as the later, more folky material. Still haven't heard anything Post-Walkyier yet but hearing that a new album is on it's way has defiantly made me happy.
