//Hey all, for my Poly Rad (political radicalism) class in high school, we recently got assigned this project on "protest music." To tell you the truth, id love nothing more to scare the living shit out of these dumb ass hippies in my class by playing some metal. What me and my buddy have to do is, create a playlist of 10 songs that are about politics in POST 2001!!!!!!!!!! I'd love to stick with the metal theme and i was wondering if you guys could help me out here and give me some suggestions on what to use. I've already got the idea of some Megadeth anything else would be really appreciated. Also, feel free to just discuss politics and metal!//

Napalm Death is also a great band and a really political one.

From the top of my head, Lamb of God's As the Palaces Burn (album) has some political themes with good lyrics and Unleashed has random political songs on their three newest albums. Shit I have to leave now but if I think of better examples I'll post them. Pretty much any grindcore band will do though lol

I would recommend to you Arch Enemy or Kalmah, but they are a little tricky to interpret. For a really easy political band listen Blinded By Faith, the message of their songs it's always clear. And almost all of their a songs have political content; that's not the case with Arch Enemy or Kalmah.

Well you can't have a discussion like this without involving the music of Ministry...they released those three concept albums before they disbanded about Bush...also...they have a lot of other political albums...like Filth Pig... Threshold's first album Consume To Live was a concept album about the environment and then the politics behind the environment and what has happened to the people in the future and so on...

06.01.2009 - 05:24 Written by X-Ray Rod on 06.01.2009 at 01:47 Yep, good choice. Skyclad are another band that often have political lyrics, also with some witty wordplay and often elements of cynical humour. For specific songs which were fairly recent, Rage (the German band, not RATM) have a song 'Carved in Stone', which would probably be suitable for the class presentation - and maybe also Iced Earth 'When The Eagle Cries' could be appropriate, with its overt pro-American stance in the wake of 9/11, although IMO it's terribly cheesy and a rather wimpy sounding ballad.

To get more specific on a couple aforementioned bands with which i am familiar - ministry - forget "filth pig", it's slow and boring. most the tracks off "Rio Grande Blood" and "The Last Sucker" will work. "Rio Grande Blood", "No Glory" are good ones. napalm death - "Diplomatic Immunity" or "The Code is Red" are probably good ones. seeing as you refer to your class as hippies, and it's a class, i'm going to take a wild guess here and assume your teacher is left-leaning, so i'd strongly suggest avoiding any NSBM bands... those might get you in some trouble.

You can use Nevermore songs as well, although they are more subtle, I think it could work.

06.01.2009 - 18:37 Written by Metal_Militia on 05.01.2009 at 23:39 Get you! You're kvlt. Don't bother with being metal or some shit like that. You want an A grade, right? Talk about the more well known bands who have a supposedly political nature. Green Day - American Idiot, Rage against the Machine, System of a Down etc. You could aslo talk about the straight edge scene which will inevitably appeal to lefties even though it's actually very right wing. Check Vegan Reich's myspace for some strong animal rights oriented lyrics. That would go down quite well. It's from the early nineties but stil relevant. Does the music need to actually be from post-2001 or just relating to post-2001 politics? If it has to be post-2001, play a song by Pink and then go on to talk about the video she did on the wool trade (see youtube). Plenty of stuff you can talk about there. Seriously, don't concern yourself with being metal here. It won't get you anywhere. You're at college to get a degree so you can get a job, not so you can stick it to leftie teenagers. A group in my psychology class analysed 3 rap videos for a presentation because that's what they were into and they got a D and the lowest grade I know of apart from that was a C10 (C+). Perhaps that was because they were stupid though seeing as they barely touched on the subject of misogyny even though one of the videos was 50 Cent. I get the feeling that you've decided you want to do this now and no one will change your mind. College isn't about expressing what you really think. I'm not paying £3000 a year to tell people my opinions and play them my music. I'm doing it because I'd like a nice job. Written by BitterCOld on 06.01.2009 at 08:18 Exactly. You're limited by the fact that you don't want to touch on anything that will cause offence. You seem to like the idea of being controversial but there's absolutely no way that you'd talk about Skrewdriver despite being one of the most important political bands ever (and they're from the 80's so I suppose it's not relevant ZOMG). Seriously, some good advice: Don't stick to metal when the obvious, easy, sensible choices aren't metal. Go with Green Day, RATM, SOAD and the like. Use Pink if it's possible to talk about stuff that isn't actually discussed in the music. Ministry is probably the only good metal choice.

Dark Empire has a couple of tunes on their latest album that might be good. Check out "Humanity Dethroned" and "The Forgotten Sin" from the Humanity Dethroned album. Another political song to consider that is very relevant to a post-9/11 world is "Children of a Worthless God" by Exodus - an attack on radical Islam. Finally, I know this is too old for your project, but if you can get extra credit points for it, be sure to check out "Surf Nicaragua" by Sacred Reich. That one was a very pointed criticism of the Reagan Administration's policies in Central America.

Dude, just do what I did throughout high school and lie. If I were you, I'd just play my favorite metal songs or just play super brutal death metal so no one can understand the vocals and provide false lyrics. So much easier!!

Account deleted Written by Metal_Militia on 05.01.2009 at 23:39 There's nothing wrong with Hippies, not a damn thing, they're actually very politically inclined. Some may say I'm kinda-sorta a Neo-Hippie type. Alot of the time Metal is politically Apathetic, it deals with Religion much more. But Metal is Liberal just like Psychedelic Rock.....Unless it's NSBM (in which case it's Far Right). But anyway, check out Napalm Death. Sepultura's '90's albums had political songs.

Anyways, i cant just do that becasue i have to provide lyrics and a background to the song. If that werent the case id be all over your idea haha!//

Actually, there would be nothing wrong with playing some National Socalist Metal IMO, in the context of a class about political radicalism. If handled carefully and intelligently, and not just for the sake of controversy, it could make for an interesting presentation, if you talk about why a band would want to express themselves in such a way. By picking a very left-wing song and a very right-wing song, it would make an effective contrast, and would probably be better than just picking a bunch of songs that all have the same viewpoint.

Just so long as you can do so without earning the scorn of the teacher, though. with any social science type class i took in college, i would have been lauded for something like Ministry's blatant anti-Bush tracks, but definitely castigated had i brought in anything on the far right - even though my own personal beliefs are slightly center-right, and when one goes far enough to the left or to the right, they start to exhibit very similar behavior only with a different name for their ideology.
