Metallica - Win Best Metal Performance Grammy

Metallica have won a Grammy Award in the Best Metal Performance category with the song "My Apocalypse" at the 51st annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles last night. This is Metallica's eight Grammy thus far, including five for "Best Metal Performance."

All the nominees for Best Metal Performance (for solo, duo, group or collaborative performances, with vocals. Singles or Tracks only):

  • DragonForce - Heroes Of Our Time (from the album "Ultra Beatdown")
  • Judas Priest - Nostradamus (from the album "Nostradamus")
  • Metallica - My Apocalypse (from the album "Death Magnetic")
  • Ministry - Under My Thumb [Rolling Stones cover] (from the album "Cover Up")
  • Slipknot - Psychosocial (from the album "All Hope Is Gone")

"Death Magnetic" won also a Grammy for Best Recording Package, while Rick Rubin went home with a Grammy for Producer Of The Year.

Metallica were also nominated with the track "Suicide & Redemption" for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, but lost that one to "Peaches En Regalia" from Zappa Plays Zappa Featuring Steve Vai & Napoleon Murphy Brock. "Death Magnetic" was also nominated for Best Rock Album but lost to Coldplay's "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends".

The Mars Volta won in the Hard Rock Performance category, leaving behind Disturbed, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe and Rob Zombie.
Robert Plant (ex-Led Zeppelin) and Alison Krauss won all five of the categories they were nominated in with the album "Raising Sand".

A list of all nominees and winners can be found here.

Damn, Priest deserves the cake for that one. I'm really surprised they were even nominated.

And I believe Coldplay won with the song they stole from Joe Satriani...

I dont trust the Grammys, cause always one band or artist wins all of the awards, and this year's was Coldplay (one of the most bands I hate), but its nice to know that Metallica won....

Metallica lost to Coldplay lol.

It just wouldn't be the Grammies if they hadn't

But yes, they are pretty ignorant at the Grammy camp. I love it that "Death Magnetic" got some props, but even nominating Priest's Spinal Tap scale fuck up is a slap to the face.

Joker
Phil Anselmo of Pantera once said on the live cd (101 proof) introducing the song Suicide note II:
"You won't hear this next song anywhere but in your goddamn car, at home or on this fuckin stage, and that's the way it should be"
that's so fuckin true, and that's what Metal is about, real metal was never been played for silly awards, if a band calls itself metal, it would never accept those awards..

HOW DARE METAL BE ACCESSIBLE!!!!!!! Nice to see that the best performance actually won. and Kudos to Mars Volta as well, even if its "completely unoriginal commercial garbage".

...this is why the Grammys are bullshit. If they bothered to really look at the Metal scene, then they'd see that there are an ocean of Bands who deserve these Awards Waaaaay more than Metallica, or any of the other bands Nominated (though Priest was pretty awsome)

Well, heavy metal is just a small blip to the Grammy people really...if they had it there way, they wouldn't even bother to notice the heavy metal scene I'm sure...they probably just see it as noise...but since they have to stop for two seconds between Brittany and Justin, why not give Metallica something eh?

Robert Plant looked like ass by the way...so unkempt...and what the fuck was up with that song anyway...

I'm really not surprised, but Rick Rubin taking the producer award? If that doesn't show that its just a popularity contest, I don't know what does.

Though Robert Plant definitely deserved awards, "Raising Sand" was fantastic IMO.

The only good thing Rick Rubin ever accomplished was producing a Cure album.

Metallica = Most overrated metal band of all time

Their new album could have featured 60 minutes of crying babies, and they would have won the Grammy just because they are "Metallica"

yeah, that was the real headscratcher.

the music? who gives a shit? anyone whining over who wins or who doesn't - who cares? no matter the result you'll whine - just like i'm sure there will be plenty come March 1st when the MS Awards are handed out. we are a community of metal heads and people will still whine about what other metalheads voted for, or didn't vote for.

to a large extent metalheads are, frankly, fucking stupid hypocrites. they whine when some big commercial organization like the Grammys ignores the genre or doesn't give it the due they expect - but then they whine when someone hits it big and the scene is infested with trendjumpers. the hypocrisy is hilarious. i want to thank those of you who go off the deep end each and every time an award is handed out for all the (unintentional) laughs.

now Rubin winning the award? that's crap. it's not a question whether the music is good or bad, but the production itself. walking in to a studio and bumping all the EQ frequencies to "10" is not production. or if it is, i'm in the wrong line of work.

Nope, you're not in the wron line of business. A friend of mine is producer (he did Gorath btw) and really does not understand this Loudness-war all the so-called top producers are taking part in.

i guess these knob-molesting morons fail to understand that we, the consumer, also have access to one fairly important knob... the volume knob. we can simply turn the music up or down - so perhaps it's better if the music sounded "good" rather than "loud" as we can make it as loud as we want.

The "loudness war" is only a concept popularized by.....someone who wished to justify his dislike of certain bands in some kind of weird conspiracy where bands are all trying to be louder regardless of anything. I mean the earliest I heard of this beginning was during the early 70's, and apparently the war continues to critics, despite albums not really getting all that much louder from back then. Its that same bullshit logic which leads to "solo's are self-indulgent"

Really cool how all of the choices absolutely sucked.. The world has lost all sense of good music, i found the awards vile for the most part and the performers even worse. Sickening.
