A fellow member suggested I open a poll to find of who, in your humble opinion, is the best British band. However, after consideration, and taking into account the vast amount of British bands, I thought it would be wiser to split the poll into two different ones, one dedicated to old school metal and one to the more modern inspired bands.

For this poll, I chose Cradle of Filth. No matter what anyone says, I've yet to hear a band that actually sounds just like them. They cause contreversy amongst metal fans which is always the sign of a great band, spliting the field is something unique to big names. I've been listening to them for years and are without a doubt one of the most listened to bands from my collection.

Woah, I'm surprised Cathedral isn't on that list!

I'm going with Carcass. Most bands can't even lay claim to starting one genre, Carcass have a legitimate claim on two: Goregrind, (first two albums) and melodic death/Gothenburg. ("Heartwork") In between those two albums, is my fave death metal album of all time, "Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious".

I've never even heard Porcupine Tree, didn't even realise they were metal. :|

I just took the 8 most popular bands in the list on this here website. As for Porcupine Tree, they're more Prog Rock with some metal influences. Heartwork

I see... I guess I'm just biased cos I love Cathedral.

"Heartwork" is awesome, and yep it can be considered the start of the "Gothenburg" sound, due to Michael Amott being in the band at the time, and writing a lot of the albums' riffs!

Voted for other... Because bands like A Forest Of Stars blowed me away for a couple of weeks ago.

And of course... Esoteric and their masterpiece which is imo the best cd of this decade: The Manical Vale.

An interesting list. I think i'll have to vote My Dying Bride, I guess they remain amongst my favorite bands overall so they might as well be here too.

This should be an interesting poll though, because none of these band particularly stands out 'head-and'shoulders' above the rest in terms of popularity.

Other, and specifically, Bullet For My Valentine. why? because they have the classic 2-guitar harmony, play with some mean fucking balls and the guitars are some of the best i've heard from newer bands(formed more recently than 2000).

Napalm Death all the way: they are still standing after more then 20 years and they managed to make only 2 minor albums in 15 or so full cd's and they made grindcore accessable for everyone.

Napalm Death, because of their massive influence, and also because they're not trapped by pure grindcore the way that Anal Cunt and other grindcore bands are; they experiment, and that's good.

For me, there is a simple answer: Anathema and Porcupine Tree.

These are unique bands as far as I'm concerned, both of them brought new things to music, their own little twist. And now that I think about it it's funny that I chose bands that are more rock-oriented, whereas Anathema wasn't like that in the beginning, PT is exactly the opposite, they started incoporating metal elements only later in their career.

Napalm Death/Carcass if you look at the post Maiden Era...but if you are looking at like very recent I'd say Anaal Nathrakh.

Ah, I really dont like any of these bands. I guess I have never really thought about it. I love old school British bands, but nothing really in the last couple of decades. I guess I will vote for Porcupine Tree though, at least I have heard some stuff that I think is ok from them although I am not a fan.

Catch them on the road and you'll see what I mean. Or check out their myspace, you won't regret it.

and, lol, Napalm Death are not exactly modern, right? ^^

Paradise Lost, because they are pretty much teh fathers of gothic metal and have had a lot of "eras" and pretty much all of them kick ass (I'm not very keen of teh Doom-Death one), and IMO all their albums are great. Although PL is not precisely a modern band anyway...

I voted other because I would have voted for BOLT THROWER!

my 2nd and 3rd choices are Napalm Death and then Carcass.
None of these bands are that recent though...yeah they formed in the 80s but these bands are close to being 25-30 years old. Napalm Death formed 4 years before I was even born and I'm the same age as Bolt Thrower

For a newer band I'd put Anaal Nathrakh as well. They're only 10 years old.

if you are looking at like very recent I'd say Anaal Nathrakh.

Anaal Nathrakh is my first choice. They are freaking brutal. Napalm Death is 2nd considering how monumental they were to the genre of grindcore (some would even say they invented it).
