I was thinking of going to the movies for Pirates of the Caribbean II and realised Johnny Depp was such a great actor that he deserved his own thread/poll The man is so telented he manages to fit in every role he plays, bringing eeriness and uniqueness to his characters.
And he's not bad-looking either

His association with Tim Burton has created some of the most beautiful movies like Edward Scissorhands, dark ones like Sleepy Hollow or funny ones like Charlie and the Chocolate Factor. He's also Victor's voice in the weird (yet wonderful) tale Corpse Bride.
He's still awesome in the role of a complete maniac in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, or in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean (The first time Depp has portrayed the same character in more than one film)...

It may be hard to choose but I'd like to know which one of his characters do you prefer... My vote goes to Edward Scissorhands but I also love every other movie mentionned in this poll (except for The Ninth Gate which was rather average, and From Hell, disappointing if it wasn't for Depp's performance). You still have the "other" button for his less-known roles.

His best performance was definitely in "Dead Man". Other movies are mostly mainstream crap, although Depp may illminate even a shitty movie.

As Jack Sparoow he was amazing. I think he re-discoveres himself from time to time. But he was also awsome in 'Secret Window', from King's 'Secret Window, Secret Garden'. And I think, that he was even better in this movie, as it was a mediocre film, and the performnce of Depp was in the center.

I really like him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but he just reacted to what Benicio Del Toro did, truly a great performance by him. Johny Depp is a really fun actor IMO, but not like a chameleon like a really great actor, you see? Actors ACT . But Depp is super fun to watch, although I do get tired of him from time to time.

oh... my beloved Johnny Depp...
I think he is one of the most versatile actors and that's why I love him. Well that and his pretty face..
Ok so first I need to say that Depp + Burton = Pure gold...
So, for me his best roles are:

- Edward Scissorhands: the first movie I see his face, so dark and sad... Sometimes I feel like Edward, and that's why I feel instantly sympathy for him. You can see the sadness in his eyes, you feel like you wanna love him, save him... is so good...
- Benny & Joon: I laugh so much in this movie... is so romantic... I just love it. And he became my lover in this one.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: just because is fuckin funny! is something completely new for me to see him in this movie and he prove he can make whatever he want to do.

So my vote... is so hard... I guess i will vote for Edward Scissorhands because I also like the movie and I love Burton...

Damnated: Sorry but I have to disagree. I hate his role in Secret Window, bad movie, and bad preformance. I just HATE it.

I hate answering for people, but as far as I remembered, he just wore glasses and looked scared for 2 hours.
I don't think he's a great actor, he just takes up wierd roles, but an actor acts. Not acts wierd and looks good, there's a difference.

For sure, Dead Man is the way to go. I have disagree with the second part of your post, his others aren't crap. Other roles he did well like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Edward Scissorhands and Jack Sparrow.

It's no use to argue with ppl like you, but what do you mean by acting, if Depp isn't doing it?

Depp is acting, he's a capable actor, but I don't consider him the next DeNiro or something, he's really fun to watch and shit.
Just sometimes he's handed pretty fucking terrible films like From Hell, where he just stands there and draws a blank stare cos Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam isn't there to hold his hand or whatever the case may be. Simply put, he's just a draw. But it's not his fault he's handed terrible scripts. Anyway. most actors are just puppets if not used the correct way, they are artists too, most directors don't see this.
Anyway, the last films he's acted in like Willi Wonka are just complete garbage, nothing there at all, wish I got a billion dollars to act like a pedophile.

I consider Johnny Depp one of the best male actors I´ve seen, he can practically take any role and pull it off perfectly. Maybe because of that I didn´t vote, I don´t think I can choose a favorite movie between those, but still, another movie that I really liked with him was 'What´s eating Gilbert Grape'. His role there is incredible and the movie is also excellent.

In my humble opinion the man can act : Maybe Pirates of Caribbean is too popular for some of you (okay, it doesn't bring any great philosophical message or so) but look at what he did with Jack Sparrow. He created this character (clothes, attitude,...) all by himself. That's why I think he can act (without automatically having to be puppeted by a special director).

I heard he just thought of Keith Richards for that role. And by heard I mean I saw him say it.
Anyway, movies made after rides at theme parks....do I even have to say it?
Maybe it needed rape or lynching scenes, you know, something pirates do.
I can't stand children films.

Children films sometimes aren't so bad. It doesn't have to be accurate to be enjoyable, with some recoil... Anyway you're right about the Keith Richards part, but I've never seen Keith Richards climbing in masts (only in trees, which cancelled their gig in Paris ), so even if he was inspired by him, there's some acting behind.

Well...climbing a mast is just climbing a mast, I don't think you have to be inspired. I think there are a lot of pirate movies which show that, but I'll do research

no, honestly, I love him so damn fucking much >.< my family thought that Pirates of the Caribbean was damn long, but I swear I could watch him for hours and hours and never get tired of him, he's just so damn edible agh >.<
eh, yeah, favorite character, well I'm really into the dirty/drunk look he has during that Pirates movie, and even though I hate everything about that movie that does not include him on the screen, I so loved that role, so it may not be his best movie imo, but it is my favorite character of his, agh so damn sexy all sweaty and drunk and with rum breath agh >.<'''

I R Serious Cat
Jack Sparrow. Period.
- I also liked the Dean Corso role on The Ninth Gate, maybe because I love that movie.
- Ichabod Crane. A highly impressionable guy, but smart as hell.
- And the role he makes on Once Upon a Time in Mexico, can't remember teh name fo teh guy. He's fuckin hilarious! And a great gunman!
Jhonny depp is good in every role he makes, so it's not that important which one I like the most, all are great.

I actually haven't seen a helluva load of movies in that poll but still some I have seen include Edward Scissorhands, POTC I, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Secret Window.

I have to say, I have no physical attraction at all to Depp (which is apparently rare amongst teen girls my age over here) but I definitely can appreciate him as an actor. He's versatile unlike many other actors. His roles are always different. He was rather obscure yet innocent in 'Edward Scissorhands', brave and knowledgeable in 'Sleepy Hollow', mad in 'Secret Window' and as Jack Sparrow he was....drunk! Usually his performances are very memorable and he always seems to have a feminine slant on his acting, which my dad had to actually point out to me. Still, I enjoy his performances.
