I've always been a huge fan of twin lead guitars in metal, and I love a good trade off between two very different styles of solos! My fave guitar tag team is Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing of Judas Priest, but I love many more. From more modern bands, I really love the duo of Per Nilsson and Jonas Kjellgren from Scar Symmetry. Those guys have some serious chops!

So, who is your fave guitar team in metal?

I go for Shermann/Denner (King Diamond) because all the dark magic they've brought us in the old Mercyful Fate albums...

Another choice would be

Briody/Broderick in Jag Panzer

or

Juan Garcia/Bernie Versailles in Agent Steel

and

Larry Barragan/Robert Trevino in Helstar

I did actually have an oversight there! It should have been "Mercyful Fate", for Shermann/Denner, not "King Diamond". King obviously had Andy La Roque who was awesome, but I think he's had about 5 guitar partners so far while playing with King. Shermann and Denner are awesome though, definitely an underrated pair I think!

Clicked on other before realizing the op had a mistake stating Shermann Denner for King Diamond.
So please count my vote for Shermann Denner.
Those two together just created ocult magic

But it was close between them and
Tipton/Downing
Holt/Hunolt

Btw why would anyone choose the three guitar attack from Iron Maiden when in fact Gers almost writes nothing and most of the time isn't even plugged in on stage and the thrid guitar doesn't add a thing? What they play can easily be done by two guitars.

You know, I used to think similar about Leatherwolf. To me it always sounded as if the singer didn't know where to put his hands when on stage. Although he does some admittedly great solos

Yeah although fun to look at there also wasn't a need for three guitars there.
Of course in Lynyrd Skynyrd it is used the way it should be.
Also in Akelei where one guitar plays the parts you would expect from a keyboardplayer.

Thanks for rubbing that in! Unfortunately, it won't let me edit the choices, so the mistake is stuck there

As for Maiden's 3 guitar attack, no, it isn't needed, but there's not much wrong with it either. "Janick writes almost nothing?" :| Since "H" has been back in the band, Janick has written "Ghost Of The Navigator", "The Mercenary", "Out Of The Silent Planet", "Dream Of Mirrors", "Montsegur", "Dance Of Death", "Gates Of Tomorrow", "The Pilgrim", and "The Legacy". I'd hardly call that nothing! Not to mention all the songs he wrote when "H" was out of the band...

The ONLY thing I don't like about Janick, is when he plays Adrian's solos. I don't like his versions of "H"'s solos. But aside from that, I like having Janick in the band!

And look what he wrote, mediocre songs at best imo.
And ffs who is "H"? There is Murray, Smith, Dickinson, McBrain & Harris, and Harris has never left the band.
Smith did leave for a time as did Dickinson, but since when is SMith called "H"?

The only song out of that lot I'd call "medicore" is "Gates Of Tomorrow"....

Since when? Adrian's nickname has been "H" for most of the time he's been in Maiden. I can't believe a Maiden fan wouldn't know "H" was his nickname. The one thing I don't know, is how he got that name in the first place!

Eric very rarely plays solos, which is a shame, as he is a great player. I guess having a virtuoso in the band like Alex doesn't help! But...when I first heard Eric's solo in "More Than Meets The Eye" I thought it was Alex! It was that good.

I voted for Murry/Smith/Gers from Iron Maiden. Love those guys. Murry and Smith are liked more then Gers but Gers is getting much better. I really like Tipton/Downing as well though, it could really go either way. Mabey I chose the Maiden guiarists because I am listening to Live After Death right now. Well either way Maiden and Priest both own!

Maybe because I got into Iron Maiden as Adrian was leaving the band, I didn't form the attatchment to him that some of the older Maiden fans did/do. When I was growing up, and into Maiden, Janick was the guitarist, so I liked him right away. I gave him the nickname "Manic Janick" when I was a kid, and I still call him that now! Janick has a great stage prescence, and I think his chaotic solos give Maiden an added dimension, especially now Adrian is back in the band. I just don't like Janick playing H's solos, because he really can't play them very well.

Well I have only been a Maiden fan for around 3 years so I have not had to live without Adrian being in the band, but I like all 3 guitarists. Jannik is a little more sloppy then Adrian and Dave but he has written some pretty good solos for the last 3 albums. Plus he is wild on stage. However I agree that he deos not play Smith's solos well. Adrian should be playing those solos's.

Agreed. I think Janick plays some good solos on their 90's material as well, it's just a case of whether or not you can appreciate his chaotic style of soloing. I think the reason why he is given some of H's solos to play live, is because Maiden's setlists are usually heavily geared in favour of their 80's albums, which of course, Janick never played on. I think the answer to this problem, is play some more of the 90's and later stuff, rather than have Janick making a mess of Adrian's classic solos. It was okay of course when Adrian wasn't in the band, but now he's back, he should be playing all his own solos again.

Yea I agree that they should make an effort to make a set list that includes a good mix of songs from the 80's, 90's and 2000's. However this deos not happen much because their are so many Maiden fans who just wanna hear the songs from the 80's albums. This is too bad because I think all 3 of the 2000's albums are great, and I even think that the 90's albums are pretty good as well. Whenever they put a new album out they do tend to play many songs off of it on tour though, its just that almost everything else is the 80's stuff.

But anyway, Gers always deos much better on his own solos because he is the one who wrote em, and he knows em better then any one, same goes for everyone who writes guitar solos.

One thing a lot of people might not know about Janick, is he is left handed, but plays right handed. Which might explain why his style is a bit sloppy. At least partly.

Exactly, you're right. Aside from the current album being toured for, everything else in the set is 80's stuff, aside from "Fear Of The Dark". Maiden have always been bad for not mixing up setlists. Its usually the same songs aside from the new ones at the time. There is enough good material on their 2000's albums, and even 90's albums, that they could incorporate more of that stuff into the set. Not only would that make their live shows more exciting, Janick wouldnt have to play any of H's solos anymore.
