The albums: The Number of the Beast, Peice of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are oftin said to be albums that make up what many fans call Iron Maiden's golden era(1982 through 1989). So I thought that I would open a poll asking which song from these great albums do you think has the best effect as an album ending song. They are in order. Hallowed be Thy Name, from The Number of the Beast(1982). To Tame a Land, from Peice of Mind(1983). Rime of the Ancient Mariner, from Powerslave(1984). Alexander the Great, from Somewhere in Time(1986). Only the Good Die Young, from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son(1988). My pick is Hallowed Be Thy Name, although the first four are all very close. Only the good Die Young is great, but not quite as epic as the first four.

"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" for me. I love "Hallowed Be Thy Name" almost as much, but the fact that Colridge's poem is my single favourite piece of English literature coupled with Iron Maiden at their creative peak gives the Powerslave closer the edge in my book.

I say Only the Good Die Young, because it's probably the best Iron Maiden album IMO. However, Hallowed be Thy Name comes in a very close second.

Are you trying to kill me here? I've never thought about this but now that you mention it, the choice is painful. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" being an old time favourite for me and also probably the only Maiden classic I have never get really tired of. "To Tame a Land" is by far one of the bands most underestimated songs and sums up the darkness of "Piece of Mind" perfectly. "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is the first 10+ minutes song I heard and I have always loved it. "Alexander the Great" is... well great but certainly not one of the better tracks of that album. "Only the Good Die Young", yet again one very underestimated song. Catchy as hell. I voted for "To Tame a Land". I love all these songs but feel that this is the one I'm the least tired of and because it's kinda underestimated.

There's not much of a contest here, Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an amazing epic, very well done. Hallowed be Thy Name comes second.

Ah that was a hard choice. All of them are good songs, but the fight was between Hallowed and Rime. Both are standout songs. Went for Rime Of The Ancient Mariner...it's just epic

Man, this vote was pretty hard for me, but, I went with my heart on this one. (lol) To A tame land is definitly a favorite for me. I've read the dune series and grew up with the video game (dune II) and the movie, so I apreciate the song all the more for it. Plus it has that groovy desert sorta feel to the main riff. all in ll it's amazing. I'm also quite fond of Alexander the great. He's one of my favorite historical figures and this song tells his story, and so of course I find that awsome. The song itself, of course, is pretty bad ass, I wouldn't like it if it wasn't. Rime of the ancient mariner is so creatively brilliant, and appearently it's about a novel as well, though I haven't read that one haha. But still, it's a trip to just sit through. Some of those bass lines are trippy as hell man. It was a good step toward seventh son, as in it held some of the elements for the next proceeding album. Only the good die young is crazy energetic, and holds an awsome atmosphere. Bruce does a great job with the vocals and those guitars in the background sound like a leering magic or something haha. Solos are wicked too, of course. But in the end, I just had to go with hallowed. It's probably the most epic fucking iron maiden song, ever. Well, I dunno about ever, but it definitly holds a candle to me heart, that's true. And I definitly prefer it over these songs, which are also high ranking for me. But in the end, that's my vote.

Rime for me, it's such a brilliant song. I'm also a bit tired of Hallowed to be honest, of course it's a great song, but they play it all the time, in a way i'm more detached from it. I'm glad I went to the tour they played Rime

All the songs are great, and I think "Only The Good Die Young" is at a disadvantage, being the only non-epic song on the list. However, I will put it 2nd behind "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner". I would say "Rime..." is arguably the best song 'Arry has ever written.

14.11.2009 - 20:49 Written by BloodTears on 13.11.2009 at 20:44 I can sympothize. I won't deny Hallowed is a little played out, along with most of the whole album it came from. That's why I don't listen to NOTB as much as I used to. But that's a blessing, because on the occasion that I do now-a-days, It's fresh again.

"Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" for me. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" comes second. "Only The Good Die Young" has nothing special. I never really liked "To Tame A Land". "Alexander The Great" would be my third choice.

They're all great, though "Only the Good Die Young" doesn't reach the same level as the others. And "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is a tad overplayed and shows up everywhere. I went with "Alexander the Great". I've always liked how the guitar synths give that song (and the whole album) a cold, futuristic feel. The production helps give the song a truly epic sweep, and the song is pretty damn epic to begin with. Great intro and main riff, fantastic instrumental section.
