What I mean with the topic is is there a metal band that are above every other metal band out there
If you think you know the answer describe why you think this band are the #1 band...and please don't take an underground band that only you and three other knows about.
I want serious answers why you think the band is on top of the metal mountain, is it because of their music, fan size, live shows, record sale, popularity, legacy etc

This topic is doomed to failure, because it requires a great deal of subjective impressions, without much facts to support them.

I guess people will scream Iron Maiden as far as the topic subject is concerned.

It's impossible for there to be a "world's greatest metal band" as each genre has its own traits and legendary bands. Some people dislike certain genres due to the general sound of it, not counting subgenres and all.

Though, I'm pretty sure most people are gonna say one of the five: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Opeth and Dream Theater.

I don't think last two would qualify by any definition.

I don't think so, though I don't really care either.

Opeth and DT are not nearly as old nor they have a fanbase anything near one Judas Priest or IM, so the comparison for that matter falls on a shaky ground.

I don't understand what age or number of fans have to do with greatness. If there was an unknown metal band in Nepal (let's call them Fields Of Agony), that had existed for just 3 years, but they surpassed other metal bands in the world in terms of songwriting and performance, then that would make them the greatest metal band on Earth regardless of them lacking fans and of their lifespan.

Topic creator, you mean the band no.1 of each own individual and why that, ? Hard to answer but could be Dimmu Borgir, simply because of symphonic keyboard and psychopathic music-like. I think personally Dimmu Borgir fits to all subject as fan base, costumes, popularity, etc... and they are modern comer not old like 80s veteran, but still meets positive criteria.

You see, the main problem in this is that the songwriting and performance supremacy, as noted above, are not something you can scale or measure appropriately; meaning it's entirely subjective impression.

That's why we take into account things we CAN measure, like the age of the band or their fanbase. I'm not saying that the bigger the fanbase, the greater the band, that's folly. But age is a bit of an important factor, because if a band is BOTH old and popular, than that means they influenced a lot of the newer bands, and could be observed as sort of a role models.

A bit of both. I like to rephrase everything that as been said before in my own words to make it sound like my original idea(don't deny it we all do it) and I hate to destroy someones favorite band by bashing on it.To me its just senseless and even if it's on the internet it doesn't really give a good impression as to how <open minded> metal fans are

Slayer and king diamond are the greatest imo. they remain consistent. they cover a wide imaginative scope of all metal styles and they love what they do for music and their fans. they rule! \m/

About Slayer, not really. Think of Diabolus in Musica and God Hates Us All, especially the former. You are right about the wide imaginative scope (well, actually, I didn't think those two albums were that unique, even if experimental for their style), but it's not really consistency, IMO.

@vezzy rattlehead. you have a valid point on god hates us all. that is not a great album by slayer, but it is a decent/good album. no metal band makes their so called "master of puppets" album everytime, but its about consistancy. and thank goodness that god hates us all ends with the thrasher smasher song "payback". that song saves the album from mediocraty imo.

No, but they can try to at least make it sound decent.
Are you kidding me? "Payback" was a total joke, unless you consider having the more f-bombs, the better the song.

Shredding doesn't make the song good. It's actually pretty plain.

Ah, yet another misconception that if it has a lot of tremolo picking and dive bombing, it's good. Definitely not so. It isn't hard to play, actually.

Those are some good choices. But even these bands have flaws. Every band has its flaws, some just have more then others. I couldn't even give you a top 3. Why? Because their are too many great bands to just settle on 3.
