So, VH1 just presented this special about the story of metal. For those of you who may not have watched it, it talked about, as the name says it, about the development of metal throughout the years starting off with Black Sabbath. Anyway, going straight to the point, I wanted to hear your opinions about this show. Did you like it or not and why?, and anything you may want to comment about it, or how would you rate it over 10.

IMO there were some things I did like, and some I didn't. The ones I didn't like was that for most part they just talked about bands from the Heavy Metal genre, forgetting about the rest. I think it could have been better in that way, I mean, probably talking about several genres as they started to develop. What I did like was that they had excellent footage from early presentations from the bands, and that they interviewd a lot of recognized musicians, critics, etc. Overall, I guess I would give this show probably a 7 or 7.5/10.

Yeah, I saw it, and I was amazed, that what VH1 consideres metal is nothing more then a few old bands. They baerly mentioned the thrash era, talked about Metallica for 120 seconds, then about 10 mins about Manson. What has MM to do with metal, and it's history. ANyways, I missed the mentioning of bands like Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost etc. Hell, they even missed Sepultura. I found this show a personal offence from VH1, as they see metal, as just another TV genre, and those bands who didn't have succes making videos, do not exist. Or, they don't care. They were talking to much about Maiden and Priest, shure, they deserve the atention, but there are more bands. Wich I found anoying, but funny at the same time, was a moment, when the narrator sais somethin like this from the begining of the 90s the metal genre exploded, giving birth to several sub genres. Then the guys who talked before, started to list the genres: doom metal, death metal, gothic metal then Dee Snider saismelodic death metal. . It's not what he said, but the way he said it; if he was proud that he knew about the existence of this sub genre. If he had a degree for this. The final score would be something between 5.5-6, outta 10.

I don't mean to sound like I think metal should be kept underground and away from the media or something like that but holy shit if you don't understand something you shouldn't go about doing a documentary type thing on it. I saw this awhile ago it wasn't bad but they don't know enough about metal to do a proper show on it. Them doing this is like me trying to do a documentary on rap music sure I could scratch the surface as I know a few bands but I couldn't go into it deep enough for there to be a point. However I do appreciate that VH1 always makes an attempt to acknowledge the exsistence of metal unlike most channels.

Shure, bands like Korn need to be mentioned, but they left to much part of metal 'un-documented' so why try to do it with nu metal, wich is fresh, and everyone knows about it.

It was better than i expected, but that isnt saying much. Its an alright documentary i guess. Not exactly 'kvlt' or 'tr00', but whatever. They could have at least discussed the whole Norwegian BM scene in the early 90s though. Even Kerrang have had features about it.

I enjoyed it. I liked the way that each episode had one focus band that accounted for a good chunk of the episode, but they spent time discussing additional bands in lesser detail. As for the fourth, I cannot really argue about the time spent on Nu-Metal. While I am not fond of it, it is a branch on the metal tree and was the most public development of the overall Metal genre of the late 90's-> present. I guess Metal splintered into too many subgenres to give all proper credit within the 40 minutes or so of show. It would have been nice to see a little time spent on DM and BM, but they look at metal from a different vantage point than the average MS poster. Neither DM or BM have had the cultural impact of nu-metal (they have had a larger SUBcultural impact, to be sure.) Besides, I'm sure no matter what they had to say about either DM or BM, folks here would have ripped them for it. 8/10 for me.

it was "OK" (way better than the "40 greatest heavy metal songs"), I enjoyed the chapter that they talked about Maiden, but they coverd too much glam and nu metal, should have spend more time talking about Trash, and even some Death metal (not about Black metal, cuz I dout they even know what Black Metal is), and they didnt spoke about many European bands (outside UK)

Let me guess, it misses out folk, prog, power, doom and symphonic metal, concentrating entirely on old school metal and extreme metal because it's controversial?

yeah, all of you are right, and that's why I opened this thread. I mean, they miss out a lot of stuff and just focus on very few 'glam' bands to show the metal controversy!!?? From another point of view, I think this could also show the misconception people have of metal, even people form a music network.

too much glam? considering the clout glam wielded at it's high point, considering the records sales, chart topping albums, chart topping singles, mtv rotation, ticket sales, you should be thankful they crammed glam into about 20-30 minutes of the show. And if you were expecting significant time to be spent on semi-underground acts that sparked smaller fringe genres of metal in any detail, well, you just didn't go into this with realistic expectations.

they didn't go into black metal because it hasnt made a large impact on mainstream culture, metal culture or any culture other than it's own, hardly anybody listens to black metal compared to the more mainstream genres and even more people have never even heard of it, the documentary isnt meant to be a historical account of the evolution of metal it is supposed to be a humorous summary of metals most prominent bands and phases.

There was a point in the 90s where black metal was pretty big and satan was riding the media especially in Norway... I think that wird Varg guy (Burzum) pulled one of the greatest publicity stunts ever... and I think it should be part of metal history despite the fact that I dislike both BM's phylosophy and music... anyway, I think metal has a really interesting history and it deserves to be explored in depth going into all existing genres and figuring out where did they come from... I don't think there is another phenomenon quite like it in music in general... I belive it's pretty cool...

12.09.2006 - 21:28 Written by marinBG on 08.09.2006 at 10:39 The whole Inner Circle thing was huge news in Norway - wasn't even a blip on the RADAR over here. As for Metal's history, did you catch "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" the other night? A metal fan who is an anthropoligist attempted to do exactly that - break down the history, development, and culture of metal and metal fans. Was pretty interesting. Again, it suffered from having to cover entirely too much material in entirely too little time... but as an overview, it was intriguing.

I actually thought Metal: A Headbanger's Journey was excellent. The guy obviously knows what he's talking about and has very good knowledge of all the genres and sub genres (hell, he said that black metal has roots in punk, which is totally correct, but which a lot of black metal fans would consider blasphemy). The main focus of the film was on the sociological aspects of the metalhead community and this issue was handled very well, I think.

It was an alright show, but it seemed like anyone who knew anything about metal could have made the show. It didn't really show anything that isn't common knowledge.

I just like the fact that vh1 recongizes metal in some kind of way.

oh man i hate that show specially for the part when they say "limp bizkit and Mariryn Manson the metal of tomorrow" i was like what the fuck¿?!!!! since that day i dont watch tv anymore, i think that mtv and vh1 or any other tv music chanel must stay away from metal if they dont have a good documental and informative theme, we dont want seteotypes of metal and bands that start to play for fame and money, real metal bands play metal because they like to play and to make music!!!

But keep in mind, you guys, we're dealing with a show made by VH1. Does the average person who watches VH1 know who Messhuggah is? No, of course not. But most people do know who Van Halen is, right? They needed to make a show that would be appealing to their broad audience. Seriously, how many people would have watched a documentary on the history of Progressive, Avent-Garde and Technical Metal? "Ayreon, ah, is that some type of candy?" For who it was made by, and who it was made for, I thought it was very well done. Sure, a bit too much of the Nu-Metal. And I am not saying that because I don't like Nu-Metal, they just spent too much time of that one subject. And who knows, some 14 year old kid tuned in to see something about KoRn and learned something about Iron Fucking Maiden.
