It has happened to successful videogames like "Mortal Kombat", "Resident Evil", "Tomb Raider" and "Doom" (among others). Here you can give your opinion about those videogames which are turned into movies for the pleasure or disgust of many. My favorite videogame brought to a movie woulf be, of course, "Final Fantasy VII Advent Children" though I have to admit that Silent Hill is really very, very close. The wait for the Final Fantasy movie was stressing and when I finally saw it it all paid off. With one of the greatest computer animations I've seen, if not the best, and the continuation of one of my favourite RPG's of all time, it can hardly be a disappintment to someone (hardly possible but possible no matter lol). Here is a list of videogames' movies taken from Wikipedia: Theater Releases 1) AIR (2005) 2) DOA: Dead or Alive (2005) 3) Alone in the Dark (2005) 4) BloodRayne (2006) 5) Doom (2005) 6) Double Dragon (1994) 7) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) Note: The film was not based on any particular installment in the 8) Final Fantasy game series, and contains little to none of the elements often associated with the franchise. 9) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) 10) Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (2005) Note: It is an Original Video Animation released with the Advent 11)Pieces: Limited DVD edition of FFVII: Advent Children. 11) House of the Dead (2003) 12) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) 13) Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) 14) Mortal Kombat films: 15) Mortal Kombat (1995) 16) Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) 17) Pokémon: The First Movie (1998) 18) Pokémon: The Movie 2000 (1999) 19) Pokémon 3: The Movie (2000) 20) Pokémon 4Ever (2001) 21) Pokémon Heroes (2002) 22) Pokémon: Jirachi Wishmaker (2003) 23) Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys (2004) 24) Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (2005) 25) Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea: Manaphy (2006) 26) Resident Evil films: 27) Resident Evil (2002) 28) Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) 29) Sakura Taisen: Katsudou Shashin (2001) 30) Street Fighter films: 31) Street Fighter (1994) 32) Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) 33) Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie (1999) 34) Silent Hill (2006) 35) Super Mario Bros. (1993) 36) Surf Ninjas (1993) 37) Tekken: The Animated Movie (1997) 38) Wing Commander (1999) Direct to DVD 39) House of the Dead II (2006) 40) Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000) 41) Street Fighter Alpha Generations (2005) 42) Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf (1992) 43) Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle (1993) 44) Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994) 45) Kirby: Fright to the Finish!! (2005) 46) SiN: The Movie (2000) 47) Welcome to Pia Carrot -Sayaka no Koi-monogatari- (2002) 48) Sonic The Hedgehog The Animated Movie 49) Art Of Fighting The Movie (1992) 50) Samurai Showdown (1992) Now, what do you think of such movies?

Most of them are shit. Some are enjoyable, but there often isn't a GOOD reason to make these films other than make money. Warcraft movie is gonna make a killing, but will it be good? I don't know. Starcraft would be a better option because (and I know I'll get flak for this) but I think Warcraft 3 had a shitty story which didn't bear an once of originality or any twists. Why make a movie about it? The best thing about it was it's multiplayer. Although, one game I think they should make a movie about is Deus Ex, because it's storyline is so damn good that it's better than most hollywood films. A film based on Knights of the Old Republic 1 would be cool too, but that will never happen... and it doesn't need to,I suppose.

The "Resident Evil" movie was pretty good, specially the second one which has, as you mentioned, the great Nemesis which made a Hell of a character there. I had a little disgust because of those abilities that they give to the main character at first but with time I kind of "digested" that. I will denounce that same thing which you mentioned, when they change too much what the story is about in the games.

Ok anyone here likes adventures games? These are for videogames as metal is for the music, al least for me: I think these movies based in videogames are plain mediocre, like Avenant said mostly is for making money. Ok some of them can pass like Resident Evil, that one was ok, but most of them are very bad, and sometimes they cant go any further seeing the game were they are based on. Now if look at adventures games, thats a source of making movies due to its strong arguments, but of course no one would be interested in that. Just look no further than the Gabriel Knight series, The Dig, The Longest Journey and many more...

The problem with the failed video game movies is (I think, you may have different views on the topic) that the game don't have a storyline thick enough that can work as a movie in the first place. I you look at Street Fighter, Double Dragon and Super Mario Bros, those games don't quite have the gripping storyline. The purpose of those games is to either beat the Mc-crap out of each other or to go Italian plumber (sorry, i'm trying not to be racist) on obscure looking creatures (pokemon rejects?). Of course I'm not saying that is the only or main reason, because if you look at the street fighter 2 anime movie, that kicked arse alot, another can be the director's who blemished the name of such fine classics. Of course it could all come down to the audience as a whole, not just the gamers. Most critics and movie viewers are not gamers, the small percentage that are, will see the movie as a video game movie, whilst the LARGE percentage will see the movie as a "movie" movie. And yeah like everyone else I bloody loved advent children, now THATS a video game movie.

30.05.2006 - 23:42 Written by [user id=2134] on 30.05.2006 at 11:42 Exactly! That was my point, you cant really make a good movie out of these games mainly because these dont have a very good stoyline, most of them are just an excuse to go killing monsters or wathever or to show fantastic graphics. Some have a decent and interesting plot, like say Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but still throughout the game you mostly go around killing monsters and such... Thats why i was reffering to Adventure Games, in these you get to develop a true storyline, and get to know and identify the characters, just like reading a book. And there stories here that could easily have been movies, like The Dig a story created by Steven Spielberg himself that he couldnt take to a TV series due to lack of technology.

That list is missing a lot. Actually, just Bloodrayne and Alone in the Dark.] All those movies are fucking bad. Not because the games have bad story lines, which most do. But because that those movies are made just for money. Since the games are successful and the studios hope they can make cash off that. Anyway, those are all bad except for Bloodrayne, which is so bad it's good. It would suceed as a comedy though.

You all saw Doom didn't you? Thats reason enough for me to say that right now almost all video game turned movies suck! Same with Final Fantasy, Advent Children was just a marketing scheme, that story had no reason to be continued...

I think that some games can be turned into movies quite well. I'm often interested in how some movies go and the storylines in both the game and the movie. I watched that Super Mario Bros. movie ages ago and from memory it was great! Movies are turned into games all the time, so why not the other way around, lol. I saw the new movie to Bloodrayne in a video store the other day, so I want to see that now. Plus it's R18+ rated so there should be enough violence. I just hope the story is just as good

The only movie made from a game that I liked was the first Tomb Raider. All of the other ones I"ve seen weren't just lame, but had horrible story changes. A good example of this is Doom. They totally fucked up that story. They took out the portal from Hell and decided to use a virus. wtf?

But unlike the other Uwe Boll movies, this one is gonna be 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the others aren't even 2 hours.

I watched Super MArio Bros and I liked it alot... when I saw it, and that was on 96, I was 10 years old. Now I don't really like it that much. It's funny, though. Mortal Kombat, both of them, are a bad movies. The FX are poor, the story is poor, bad actors... Street Fighter... I enjoyed it a lot when I was 11 years old and in my strett fighter fever. Alhough I prefer it over MK. I loved Final Fantasy: Teh Spirits Within. It's fuckin great. I haven't seen Advent Children yet I liked the First Tomb Raider, but not the second one. Resident Evil (both of them) Not good, not bad... Pretty entertaining, Milla Jovovich has a beautiful face, the FX are nice, and the soundtrack slams. I enjoyed Doom, although is not quite good. I liked a damn lot the first person view, it's the best segment of the movie. Funny, I thought "The Rock" was goping to play the hero role. Another one, everyone hates the mopvie, not sure about the game: Alien Vs. Predator. I love the movie, since I like both Aliens and Predator sagas, I like them a lot. AVP is awesome, and it's a nice way to put like some epic context on the Predator, you know, the honor, the final test to prove the value of the predators as warriors, and the courage to blow everything if they failed the test. I laughed a lot in the end of the movie because there is a scene where the predator removes his mask and looks in teh eyes of the woman, and I thought "!Oh my god, he's gonna kiss her!", It would have been pretty weird... Predator kiss... Whatever, that movie is awesome. I loved that damn movie, spite everyone seems to hate it. Hail mighty Predator!

As far as Uwe Boll is concerned, I can't fucking wait for his two-part epic In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. He's, dare I say, the next Ed Wood! Written by +{Jonas}+ on 29.08.2006 at 05:33 Hey man! The first Mortal Kombat had a certain charm to it which made it great! Don't you be bashin' the greatest videogame film of all time! ... though Silent Hill was quite good as well - it was at least the truest representation of the game.

The only game movies I have ever enjoyed is: Silent Hill (takes the throne as the without doubt best video game movie ever...) Resident Evil (the first was decent) Super Mario (yeah I know it has nothing to do With mario ^^ still i loved it as a kid) Both final fantasy movies were good (But whats up with spirit within it wasnt even final fantasy ^^, nonetheless a good movie). Movies that sucked : Resident Evil 2 (the second was so horrible and pathetic I cried. They made Nemesis look like a fucking fool, where is his gory tentacles commin out of his hands!?!??!) House of the dead = Takes the throne as some of the greatest shit I have ever seen. I want my 2 hours back.... Doom = hollywoodified = sucks major balls Alien Versus Predator = Omg I cried here, many scenes where totally worthless and did really disappoint me since im a huge fan of both Predator and Alien movies. Thats about it. After all theese total dissapointments I have very low hopes for the upcomming Halo movie... lol

Not just because both Predator and Alien started as movies and then they were brought to videogames, but also because the idea of Alien and Predator getting together was first conceived in comic books or graphic novels in 1989. Hence it would fit the "Movies Made From Comic Books" better.

There is something I have actually noticed, you might have too. The games industry at the moment very much rivals the movie industry. They bring in a crap load of money, the target audience has expanded ten fold in the last ten years (kids arent just the players anymore). Even celebrites are getting a piece of the video game action. All in all, the video game industry is making as much (if not more) money as the movie industry. Now comes my point. If you are to make a movie of a popular video game, people will see it. It doesnt matter if the movie is absolutely crap or not, the wide audience of gamers will still shed out the cash to see the movie regardless. If you think about it, its a simple and easy money maker, you dont even have to be a video game player to make a video game movie. For example, look at Doom, it was a bad movie, doesnt do the game justice at all. I as a gamer knew that it would be bad, most gamers did (gamie senses tingling). But in spite of that, I still found myself buying tickets to see the movie. Its not that far fetched if you think about it. I'll shutup now

Thats right I came here for another reason. I just found out about the Dead Or Alive movie, and I ask myself...why? Definately not looking forward to this one, it's actually embarressing as a gamer to see a game such as DOA being made into an american movie. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but the DOA franchise belongs to the Japanese, to be made western style just doesnt seem right to me. But it might be just me i dunno. THE END

ok well i loved the su8per mario brothers film i liked the mortal combat films Final fantasy VII : Advent children is a god among gods in my eyes haha the street fighter movie was ok .. but i thought it was never as good or got as much of a reputation as the Snes game (at the time) i dont like Final fantasy: The spirits within ... that film was a flop and really should not have been made ... it wasnt anything like any of the ff games or anything and as such shouldnt have carried the title as if associated with them ... just an attempt at trying to use brand image for sales... and i really do not like POKEMON!!! i liked the games!! i liked blue and red !! i still like the games!! i still play the games !! but seriously Red and blue games come out - Make series (so far so good) - make another game based on series?? (this is like making a game of a series made from a game .. its just practically cheating people as to it being a different game!) then came the films .. now i liked the trading cards and all sorts like that but i didnt find the films too good .. at all .... really .. the first film was ok but then thereafter ... that just knocked me right off of the "Pokemon" band wagon ... i stopped watching the series after it went all Jhoto or whatever and it just seemed to me like it was once a respectable game then they just used it over and over to make money for more films and such .. however i find the games and the ideas in them very interesting and quite different .. but thats for a different forum i guess .. im proboubly not making much sense .. haha oh well ..

I saw in the video shop not too long ago, an overnight hire of House of the Dead 2. Now I thought the first movie was a very quiet release but this one was just silent to the point of non-existence. I've not watch either of the two movies but not being a House of the Dead fan i can be sure i wouldn't find this enjoyable (or even watchable for that matter).

It was just senseless killing and nudity (horror movies nowadays rely heavily in this). It had nothing memorable as I recall. I didn't know that they dared to release a sequel and for obvious reasons as you have stated but I don't think that this movie would be any different; maybe it is even worse.
