At last, the mighty Bolt Thrower have returned, with their inimitable style of pounding extreme Metal. 'Those Once Loyal' is Bolt Thrower's 8th full length studio album, and longtime fans of the band (such as myself) will have a fair idea of what to expect - mainly midtempo, crushing yet groove-laden Metal with great riff after great riff, complete with Bolt Thrower's own unique sense of melody. Although the standard version of this album has 9 tracks, the digipak (which I was lucky enough to get) also has a bonus track entitled 'A Symbol Of Eight'. Needless to say, it's worth obtaining the digipak if you get the chance.

While many bands seem to take the path of becoming a shitty legacy act, touring and making uninteresting "return-to-basics" albums until one of the members drops dead and nobody else has enough left in the tank to bother looking for a replacement, the same cannot be said for Bolt Thrower, who, after releasing this album, decided they had recorded something so good and so perfect that there was no longer any point in recording more material.

This album is rock solid. If I were to recommend a starting point for someone curious about death metal, I'd probably tell them to start with this album.

Excellent album, and key to exactly what Bolt Thrower do well and have done ever since they formed. 'The killchain' and the title track are just belligerent.

Groovy death metal finesse right here

Cool fact that no one gives a damn about: the intro to "The Killchain" is identical to that of "Embers" on The IVth Crusade.

This album definitely has that brutal and intense sound characteristic of Bolt Thrower. The problem for me is that it sounds a lot like their previous releases, but does not have any memorable songs.

How could I have ever initially thought that this album was even close to being mediocre.
I have always been so wrong about that (well, problem probably was that last time I have listened to it properly -- or obviously even not that properly -- might have been some ten years ago or so).
When canons fade is my favourite track.

Their best IMO. Standout tracks for me are At First Light and The Killchain - some seriously headbangable riffs in these.

I thought For Victory was that good it would be the peak album in their career, never to be bettered, but then this monster came along, and imo beats For Victory by a small margin abd has become one of my all time favourite death metal releases. The the vocals and lyrical war themes are truly amazing and captivating, the riffs are nothing short of spectacular, and every song is enjoyable to listen too, but if I had to pick my favourites they would be; "When the Cannons fade", "The Killchain", "Granite Wall" and "Anti Tank", but the album is consistent throughout.

Even though Bolt Thrower has a formula (heavy riffs, war lyrics, etc), that formula is SO GOOD! I'll never get tired of listening to those badass riffs!

I think The Killchain was inspired by Quake 2 soundtrack. Sounds very similar.

While IVth Crusade and ...For Victory have great standout tracks (for example the respective title tracks), I find Those Once Loyal is Bolt Thrower's most consistently great album!

The growls are refined and streamlined, never showing any weakness! The heavy riffs throughout are engaging and the guitar solos are fun as well! Listening to the entire atmosphere, I'm truly mesmerized - as I'm crushed by the tanks and hearing the cannons fade...

what a beautiful farewell from the warriors of death metal!

For this was their last release I will put a ranking after my comment. IMHO the last four releases were the best and even though ToL is a superb album I like it a little bit less then the three before.

Faves all (LSoH and Salvo a bit less)!

1. Honor, Valor, Pride - 9.8/10
2. ... for Victory - 9.7/10
3. Mercenary - 9.5/10
4. Those once Loyal - 9.4/10
5. The IV Crusade - 8.4/10
6. Realm of Chaos - 8.1/10
7. Warmaster - 8/10
8. In Battle there is no Law - 7.4/10
