Often considered the first true Viking metal album, to this day it continues to be the standard by which all other albums in this sub-genre are judged.

The music is grand, emotional, and epic while at the same time being very simple and straight-forward. It captures the essence of its subject material in a way that was unprecedented in heavy metal in the late 80's. And what I mean by that is even without the lyrics (dripping in Viking lore and Norse mythology as they are), you still get a huge sense of cold-shores, swift raids and smoke filled mead halls.

First true viking metal album or not, it doesn't mattter to me. The level of musicianship here is exquisite and unique. Quorthon was so far ahead of his time when writing this...

Fucking Epic! This offering is arguably the most significant Bathory album of all time. Quorthon ahead of his time indeed.

Epic, one alum is like epic never ending road to Asa Bay, where Dragon ships stand mighty , I love this album, this is why I love Bathory, true epic album, but even Quorthon might play power metal or glam metal and be awesome, true Odinsson , true viking, good album, good epic music, good lyrics

A classic.
Firm place in my all-time top 30, it always kept ever since.
Funny, when talking to "the new generation" of black metal fans today, many guys have never heard of Bathory.

Alright album, but severely overhyped. It tries too hard to replicate the epics on Blood Fire Death such as A Fine Day to Die and the title track, with results that vary from good to decent to just flat-out boring.
