I have been reading alot on metalstorm about bands who sold out blah blah blah Metallica sold out on the black album blah blah blah NO! they'd just reached a sertan level of popularity where they could break into mainstream or stay in the underground and they took the chanse....and made it That one example when a band "selling out" and succeed...but is there bands that tried and failed to do this...sure it is Judas Priest is one...remember Turbo....they tried and failed....and made ram it down and painkiller Do you know any metal bands that have tried to make more mainstream/radio friendly music and failed and are now playing the kind of music they damn "should do"

30.12.2011 - 14:12 Written by arwestromen on 30.12.2011 at 14:00 they sold out because they knowingly made a much more accessible album targeted at the masses. That's why they used Rob Rock as prodducer, they WANTED to become a lot bigger by targetting Billboard and mainstream metal listeners. They even said so. SO that is a clear case of selling out their old sound and fanbase.

Megadeth's Risk is definitely one. Mustaine even said it should've been under another name to get better sales Another one that comes to mind is Falling Into Infinity by Dream Theater, though in this case the band didn't want it to happen. The push from their record label and producer got to the point where Portnoy almost quit the band because they scrapped the band's initial plans in order to get more mainstream. And no, it didn't sell well.

Grave Digger released a glam rock or something album in 1987 under the name "Digger" which imo is absolutely ridiculous it didn't work out for them, so they reverted to their old style (thank Satam for that as their late 90s/early 200s albums are godly).

The first 3 posts in here are a good example of how this thread is pretty much doomed to fail. Selling out but failed? Shouldn't selling out, regardless of the results be considered a failure in itself?

30.12.2011 - 22:08 Written by Doc G. on 30.12.2011 at 20:55 not really...Metallica in my eyes are a success...I may not like their sound after Justice but they shure got Big, popular, successful after the black album Judas priest tried to do the same with Turbo but didn't reach the same kind of popularity (they failed) and went the other way with faster tempo with the ram it down and painkiller album.

31.12.2011 - 10:59 Written by Risto on 30.12.2011 at 15:48 I was going to say Dream Theater too. But as you said that album was more the record labels and producers album than Dream Theater's. If people think that's bullshit, listen to the 2 disc demo album "Falling Into Infinity", it's way better than the finished record! And about Celtic Frost... yeah, Vanity/Nemesis was complete crap but Cold Lake is barely a Celtic Frost album. At least according too Tom G. Warrior who today says that he wanted to put out that album under a different name. True or false? When it comes to Warrior you don't know, the guy who went from hating the Hellhammer demos, to suddenly loving them.

I wouldn't call None So Vile generic. :/ I can't think of too many albums off the top of my head that sounded like it when it was released. And there's nothing original about The Unspoken King. The band hopped on the deathcore bandwagon while it was still relevant to the Hot Topic teens. / still not sure if it's relevant these days

31.12.2011 - 14:38 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 31.12.2011 at 11:11 Graham Bonnet! That's the second time I heard a (semi-?)praise for some guy I like. I should get worried Back to the topic, I don't think what Pain Of Salvation is doing now could be considered selling out, or is it so far a success, but it's probable that Daniel's ego and desire to be a bigger-than-life musician lead him to erase prog from the picture. Not many people are buying it so far. I personally like RS2 a lot, but I don't think it's absolutely honest.

Satyricon's "Now, Diabolical" and "The Age of Zero" had Saytricon's recent Black N Roll brand style they had since "Volcano" but only highly commercialised and so far the massive success Satyr has hoped for hasn't come yet.

Megadeth (at the time of "Risk") Celtic Frost ("Cold Lake") Judas Priest ("Turbo") Helloween with the infamous "Chameleon". That was such a sold-out album but it failed so bad it nearly caused the band's demise.

Account deleted Written by Doc G. on 30.12.2011 at 20:55 You seem to misunderstand, when he says "selling out but failed" i think it's meant like becoming more radio-friendly or whatever didn't work out for the band anyway, so it's cheaper if they'd just stayed playing their original music. Like when the band should realise, the mainstream sound just isn't for them......they didn't sell out successfully.

Voivod sort of sold out with Angel Rat (though I still love the album) and it was met with little notice/acclaim. It could be argued that Nothingface started that era, but Angel Rat took them to a further level of accessibility.

Hmm I remember Suidakra doing a shitting melodeath album back in the day but then returning to their more folksy roots. Thank goodness. I think it's a mark of character in a band to recognize a failure and go back to a previous style, or at least move forward from the mistake. Too many bands change their style and fail, but cling to it to their detriment.
