I want to be clear, what I'm reviewing here is the 2001's re-mixed and re-mastered version of the original Iced Earth, part of the Dark Genesis box-set , but since nobody has written something about the original till today, I can at least talk about the songs, seeing that I have no clue about the original sound. In fact, I already noticed a big difference between the original Night Of The Stormrider and the version included in the box-set. Have a look at that other review for more information. But still, this record has something very attractive: that's the first Iced Earth's full-length album, following their highly-praised demo.

Oh my god!
Comment on this excellent album is really difficult ...
Everything in this album is a masterpiece and a very good ...
I think * Jon Schaffer * is the best world beat rhythm guitar .... I think anyone who has not listened to the album ... It has done wrong in his life ... not listening to the album "the best guitar riff heard nothing ... not even the passing of * Gene Adam * In my opinion the best vocals ICED EARTH ...

This is a great debut. The band can play acoustics, thrash, heavy, power and put them together in same song and it will sound amazing. IMO the band is a bit underrated regarding to these early albums (and the demo); like on the 1st demo, these songs too are quite not the best songs that IE can write, but they are still strong songs and fairly unique in IE's discography. The band didn't ever again sound like this (well Stormrider is similar, but not the same). Highlights including "Written On The Walls", "When The Night Falls" and "Curse The Sky", but tbh the title track, "Colors" and "Solitude" could be added here as well. The only song that I see as unnecessary is "Funeral".

It was a incredible stupid move to omit the intro to When The Night Falls, which they've done on the remastered versions. I mean that intro is one of the reasons that song kicks some major ass and qualify as one of Iced Earths best tracks! At least they got it right in the Brutal Legend soundtrack. That (and Gene Adams horrible singing) aside it's a fairly enjoyable album.

What year is that version from? Mine has the intro to When The Night Falls even though it's a remastered edition. I do agree the intro should always be included though, which it also isn't on the re-recorded version with Barlow.
As far as Gene Adams goes, I wouldn't say he's good, but I find him quite fitting and I enjoy his vocals on this album. That said, John Greely was a much better fit for this era of Iced Earth.

You are absolutely correct sir! I was listening to my "original" version (1991) but I do also own the Slave to the Dark box and the Dark Genesis box and I mixed up my thoughts and remembered that the intro was missing on the remastered version instead of the rerecorded version. Too many things to keep track of.

This is an excellent debut album, often overlooked.
It can almost keep up with the outstanding successor, and it is similar in style.
A style they never came back to, I second this, and a style I like very much.
While production is probably the only downside here, creativity in songwriting is overwhelming.
I so much prefer this to any IE after the Dark Saga.
Highlights: written on the walls, curse the sky (beautiful guitar melodies here), and of course when the night falls.
(Though I agree that most other songs shouldnt be left out here.)

While the singing is just OK, the songwriting is absolutely top notch. Excellent album.

All the times I've listened to Iced Earth's debut, I've never once been dissuaded of further listens because of the vocals. I mean, they're not even that bad. Cheesy in places , yes, but not bad. That aside, there are songs on here that could easily rival that of the band's more popular records, namely the title track and "Funeral". Overall though, a very consistent debut, and a marker of even better things to come in my opinion.

It has always sounded good on me, and it doesn't need a re-release mix IMO. To me it's best IE with Stormrider and Alive in Athens is next if live is counted.

What a debut! Some of Iced Earth's best material can be found here, the vocals are ok but only got better on their next album, and so did the lyrics and songwriting, but the guitar work is fantastic, Jon was undoubtedly the true riff king at that time.
