My Dying Bride - Enter The Studio
British death/doom metallers My Dying Bride have checked in with the following announcement about recording new material for an upcoming full-length album: "On Sunday April 1st My Dying Bride entered the studio to begin recording their eleventh full length album. It's very early days right now but already things are running smoother than expected which is very encouraging. Working titles so far are "And The Sirens Called Odysseus", "A Tapestry Scorned" and "The Manuscript". More from the band later..."

This is great news... and I already like the sound of those working titles a lot. Let's just hope the new album has the same originality, quality and atmosphere as The Barghest O' Whitby.

Hmm, I'm not too fond of a greek mythology inspired title. Just take out "Odysseus", and it turns into a pretty sweet title. The other titles aren't too bad. It'd be great if the album is musically in the same vein as The Barghest O' Whitby, but as long as it is devoid of bright melodies, I'll be happy. And what's up with this "Neoclassical Darkwave" as their genre? Just because Evinta came from left field, doesn't change/add to the band's entire genre. Honestly I view Evinta as a tribute CD performed by people who aren't even in the band, and asked Aaron to do vocals. With that logic, why not label bands who release one cover CD as a "Cover Band"? MDB isn't a darkwave band, so they shouldn't be labeled as one.

05.04.2012 - 23:58 Written by [user id=35732] on 05.04.2012 at 22:38 I can see that a web script is populating the band genre by pulling it from their CD discography page which makes perfect sense, but this is a case where it doesn't apply. Not a big deal or anything, but I think it's misleading. Seeing a "Neoclassical Darkwave" genre label on their page tells people that MDB is now "also" a Neoclassical Darkwave band, which is 100% untrue. Aaron releases one darkwave CD under the MDB moniker with solely guest musicians to pay tribute to MDB's past works. A good example of a band's proper genre change/addition is when Katatonia went from Death Doom to alternative rock/gothic doom metal. The sound on their major releases reflect this new sound. Some whim CD that came and went shouldn't influence a new label. I think it'd make more sense if the CD's genre was next to the CD's title in their discography list. That way the website is informing people that a death doom band released a darkwave cd rather than saying MDB is a darkwave band: 2004 | 8.7 Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light | Death Doom Metal , Gothic Doom Metal 2011 | 6.9 Evinta | Neoclassical Darkwave

06.04.2012 - 00:07 Written by Carrion Misery on 05.04.2012 at 22:27 "And the Sirens Called" would still be Greek mythology-inspired... Unless you meant that the title ("And the Sirens Called Odysseus") just sounds like shit, regardless of the Greek mythology inspiration. I would agree.

06.04.2012 - 05:56 Written by Ankläger on 06.04.2012 at 00:07 lol! Yeah, to put bluntly, it does sound like shit. I just meant "Sirens" could be used figuratively for seductive women who would really rip your heart out. On the other hand, I never expected MDB to name a song track from part of a Greek poem. Doesn't seem to fit, but it could be surprising. Written by [user id=35732] on 06.04.2012 at 00:17 I don't recall denying that their darkwave album was part of their history. I even suggested it be apparent on their profile that Aaron did a darkwave CD. Regardless of whose obsession it is, it was an extracurricular piece and it's incorrect to classify the band as darkwave as a whole, even if it's just 2011. I thought I summed it up well in my last message, so I'll just be repeating myself. Ah well. Thanks for the suggestion link.

07.04.2012 - 04:40 Written by Carrion Misery on 05.04.2012 at 22:27 So you're saying we should label a neoclassical darkwave release as death doom? I don't think so. The genre aligns with Evinta and nothing more. We didn't change their style to reflect a new direction, but we did change it to match up with a release that is most definitely neoclassical darkwave.

My Dying Bride have been one of my favourite bands for years so this is good news. Just hope its something inspired as their last few releases have been dissapointing. Evinta was shite, For lies I sire and Line of deathless kings mediocre with a few good tracks. Barghest was a bit more interesting so I'm hopeful

07.04.2012 - 17:17 Written by Troy Killjoy on 07.04.2012 at 04:40 lol, No, you misread what I said. I am 100% for labeling Evinta as Neoclassical Darkwave. Put a huge red arrow pointing to the CD if you want. It's not a metal CD, let alone death doom. However, MDB isn't darkwave, so they shouldn't be labeled as such. It's important to make it apparent that Evinta is darkwave so people who like darkwave can easily find out about it through search. Say someone never listened to MDB and they are starting to get into death doom, but hates darkwave; they will skip over MDB because metalstorm says they're darkwave now, and its easy to over look (2011) as its time span. At first glance, it just looks like that's when they adopted the new style. As being familiar with the way the genres are listed, you know it's just linked up with the releases, and not necessarily the band's working genre, but don't you think it's misleading for people who don't know where that list pulls from? The site will label the bands in the format as they please, and I won't lose sleep over it - it's just incorrect.

08.04.2012 - 04:05 Written by Carrion Misery on 07.04.2012 at 17:17 But it's not. We have 2011 as the neoclassical darkwave period, not 2011 - present so it doesn't look like they adopted the new style. It looks like for one release they played neoclassical darkwave. I'm all for improving the layout in any way possible, so if you have a legitimate suggestion to help make this more appealing and user-friendly, feel free to PM the site designer.

Sweet, I'm looking forward to this album. I just bought The Dreadful Hours, and am expecting it in the mail soon. There looks to be a lot of genre talk here.

But I was REALLY surprised with the 27-min-song from the ep The Barghest O' Whitby. it was like... I dunno, like it came right between TDH and SODWOL. Not brilliant by any means but it was a step in the right direction.

09.04.2012 - 20:48 Written by Troy Killjoy on 08.04.2012 at 04:05 I guess I'm one of the few who doesn't think tribute CDs contribute to a band's genre at any time or period. However, as I said, it is important for people to know what the band is releasing. I could slap something together and present it to Ivan. I like how the lay out of the site now, so there's not much to do.
