Venues that don't allow moshing.

So I operate in a local band (as i'm sure quite of you also do). The thing with certain areas, is the lack of a place to play. So when I find a place where I can book, who I want, when I want, and charge whatever at the door, i'm happy as pie. But the venue, slaps down it's rule of "there is no moshing allowed". Locally, I've had some people completely boycott the venue and the show strictly because of the no moshing rule. What's worse, is that most of the people pitching a fit don't even mosh themselves, the rest of the whiners are hardcore dancers (which i personally am not fond of, but that isn't the point here). So this brings about my point of discussion. Do you support venues that don't allow/support moshing?? Please explain your standpoint instead of just a Y/N. I personally do, because it's so hard to even find a venue for a metal band out here, and I support the local music scene, which around here is in trouble.

Huh, I haven't heard of this before (though I'm not a concert-goer so that's not surprising). I'd honestly like to know of any local areas that have a no-mosh rule so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I dunno, my idea of a concert/gig is actually standing and listening to the music, watching the band play. Not running around and moshing.

I remember a Slayer interview where they were talking about their 1st show in Japan and fans couldn't even stand up. They played in front of a sitting crowd and it was weird. IMO, I would support those venue too since I guess the owner doesn't want his equipment and space "ruined" but still wants to give visibility to the local bands. And like Troy at shows, on the rare shows I go I stand and listen, but the moshing is also part of the show and fun to watch.

16.05.2012 - 23:53 Written by Troy Killjoy on 16.05.2012 at 23:07 I think Moshing is usually part of teh experience, unless it's like a slow Doom band or something. Once you experience it, it really is fun As for the topic, it's their venue, so it's their choice, If I can't mosh, big deal it's not the end of the world and I would still want to see the band.

Part of the experience or not, I have no interest in moshing, regardless of whether I'm watching Benighted or Process of Guilt.

17.05.2012 - 00:09 Written by Troy Killjoy on 16.05.2012 at 23:07 Same here and I don't think it's boring at all. Okay... I have moshed but I can count those times with one hand. There is just so very very few bands that make me want to mosh and it's not even about how agressive they are, for example... I love Pig Destroyer so much I would just want to stand and watch them play a brutal set and actually remember the band playing... If I mosh with something is probably because the band is good... but not THAT good, so moshing helps me enjoy it a little more. It was fun with Vildhjarta for example...

No mosh, no core, no trends, no fun. More seriously, I agree with most posts. I go for the music, never get drunk at gigs, and if I mosh it's coz the band is too boring just to just stand and listen (and the boring music they play must obviously invite to mosh to have a little more fun , happens alot with generic thrash and grind bands). I don't mind people moshing around as long as they don't act like dickheads. But I hate when people mosh to "non-moshable" music.... it's just absurd.

They usually stop when no one joins in and they just get the dirtiest looks. If it were up to me, moshing would be done at the back so the people who actually just want to see the band and listen can get closer to the stage without having to keep an eye on the pit.

I have experienced the "no moshing" rule thing in the past but I can't for the life of me think of the venue(s) where this happened. I think it was at a small venue where I used to see some local bands perform.

I guess I can see where you're all coming from, but gotdamn I love me a good mosh when the music calls for it. For me it generally brings the brutality of the music up a level. It all adds to the concert going experience for me.

Ever since I saw my dad coming out of the moshpit with broken nose and hideous bruises on his hands and leg, barely for a week he wasn't walking properly..it screwed me from there. I love too see moshing but I don't know i'll ever participate into it. As for venues, It depends upon the required/ proper places and a Metal scene. I think you won't ever be interested in performing as a Metal unit while your fans are sitting like they are in conference hall and see your performances. IMO every band to the extent try to manage their stuff before they hit the stage and if they don't, they do something( by hook and crook) try to bring out the best level for performers and the fans. So I don't support venues that don't allow/support moshing.

17.05.2012 - 09:20 Written by Troy Killjoy on 16.05.2012 at 23:07 I remember one local show where they had a no moshing rule. The posters informing everyone of this rule were promptly ripped down and the rule ignored. I think more venues than you'd think have a no moshing rule. It's just incredibly difficult to enforce, so no one bothers even bringing it up.

I'm with Troy. I've been to 6 shows and I can't stand the mosh crowd. It's a distraction from the show, and often becomes the show. Not to mention, it's so punk. Can people mosh- go for it. But, I can understand why venues don't like it. I don't like it.

Although I like to stand and listen and watch the show I am attending I think a no-moshing rule is ridiculous. And I haven't come across such a house rule here. But what we do have here a lot of times is a no-crowd surfing rule, which imo is a good thing. Because crowdsurfers you don't see coming at you from the back. Most of those venues that have a no crowd surfing rule, however, do allow stage diving. But then again you can see a stage diver come at you and act accordingly.

18.05.2012 - 01:19 Written by [user id=131073] on 17.05.2012 at 09:56 I'm with Troy and you. When I go to see a band, I go to see the band and I want to enjoy their music and stage performance to the fullest. I don't want to waste my time and concentration on dealing with pointless douches who think it's awesome to push other people to the ground. Last time I really got angry was at an Annihilator concert which was wonderful but there were couple of blokes who were drunk and staggered around and pushing people who were listening to the music. These people are often there because they want to act like idiots. Music is irrelevant. Especially when they're drunk. In fact, I don't even headbang because it makes my head ache. It's probably because my brain is so small that it rattles against the inside of my steel-hard cranium.

Troy's popular in this thread lol, and I'm with him as well, in that I've never been to a concert before, and that if I were to go to one, I'd like to actually be able to concentrate on the music, rather than watching some brawling in front of the stage. Considering there are no metal concerts of any kind near where I live (the nearest being at least a few counties across), I'd like to think I got the most of any concert I went to, enjoyment wise, considering the cost and travel
