Are there any metal bands out there that don't fall into a specific genre, like thrash, death, black, doom, progressive, power, gothic, folk, or metalcore? Just being called metal.

I'm talking about plain metal. Back in the 80s there were bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, though I'm not looking for bands that copy the 80s sound. I'm basically talking about bands that have a sense of neutrality from major genres.

No, every band fits under at least one sub genre.

Iron Maiden & Judas Priest = Heavy Metal.

Back then it was probably called only "metal" and then as the genre kept evolving the fans/musicians began to conceive these subgenres as they saw fit. Of course I don't know that for sure, Marcel should probably have a thing or two to say about that, but those "classic" bands you mentioned are normally called Heavy Metal as the guys said.

The funny thing is, that for most ppl "heavy metal" means quite the same as "metal in general"...they dont know shit about metal subgenres...

All bands are heavy or "regular" metal to me. Bans like Steelwing, Skull Fist and Hell play traditional metal to me.

David Murry From Iron Maiden said in the late 90's what he thought about metal. He say metal? It was all heavy rock back in the day. It still is. Tha its just a clerical error. Everyone has clashed that music into those Genres, unfortunate cause that segregates metal. I like it all, but Iced Earth Ftw. Metals tightest rhythm and prove me wrong. Cant go wrong with Blind Guardian. But it's all under an umbrella. Kai Hansen is the architect for metal, he fleshed all the genres out, listen to the 15 albums from Helloween(before he left)to Gamma Ray.

What? No, genre classification is necessary due to the variety of sound we now find in Metal. Would you still listen to Metalif bands like Evoken and Blunt Aus Nord were put tright beside Blind Gardian and such? It would give people the wrong impression of the music and make searching for a new band to listen too really hard.

No matter what magazines and the media are gonna label bands by their sound. it's impossible to break free of.

No, not there is no Genres, there used to be only a few. Now metal is split into multiple genres (hence the segregation comment). Obviously listening to contrasting forms of metal, might not give the same reflection in the taste of the Genre.

Clerical... I should have said academic. I'm not sure they teach you musical genres beyond Jazz, Blues and Rock. Since from what i was taught and how I feel that is about it. those are broad categories obviously that give way to genres.

Music is a mash now. Beyond straight categories, now the goal is to infuse different world musics into different genres. A.K.A. Scandinavian folk music + metal, or Imperial Chinese + Jazz. That is what the musical professors at GIT or Berkley want to see to, a class of musical structures blended together.

BTW searching for a new band is kind of hard, since there is so much specification out there on what metal is, and some camps are down right hostile if you listen to another genre or form. Give to all the trolls that wait in lye and soon as you post something they feel strong about, they lambaste you. (You sir are not. I like the discussion.)

Depends of the nagazine. I already heard some calling Hail of Bullets Nu-Death Metal or Ex Deo Spartan Metal. Deffinetly labels that the bands can break free of since it doesn't reflect the music being played.

Exactly. Guess that's what happens when non extreme magazines cover extreme music. It just goes to show that one needs to rely on his own ears rather then some wanaben experts.

Well of course. Let say you like strawberry pancakes. It doesn't mean you like every kind of pancakes. To make it easier for you to order it in restaurants, brilliant chefs decided to call a pancake with strawberries: Strawberry pancake. Same thing applies to music and metal is no exception.

Please, you'll make me blush.

For classification, I know we've come up with really useless subgenres nowadays, but I guess you take some and leave some all depending on your OCD level.

I agree with you, there's too many useless subgenres... Don't get me wrong, I like folk metal... but most of the time you can just put folk bands in another larger subgenre. Covering a specific lyrical theme should not change your style... or using some funky instruments either. anyways thats my opinion. Most of the time I feel like they play some sort of extreme power metal... there is obviously some FOLK sounding melodies at times, but still.

It occurred to me, after seeing them live recently and having had beefed up their library on my HD prior to the show, that Accept is "just" Metal. They have variation within the "Heavy Metal" realm, but they typically remain with their feet to the fire of purely... Metal!

Accept's latest "Stalingrad".... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9AUh6E0LXk

I hope you're kidding, right?

Accept have never had anything to do with thrash, the closest they got to speed/thrash was just their song Fast As A Shark. Accept were and are pure heavy metal.

Teutonic Thrash is Destruction, Kreator, Sodom...

had a huge laugh earlier today on Facebook with Ed Warby and Stephan Gebédi of Hail Of BUllets and some others about them being labelled Nu-Death Metal. Apparently Metal Blade wanted to originally promote HoB as Extreme Modern Metal And now Ed jokingly said he came up with djent riffs and stuff for the album which is in the works

If you look at the official press release of On Divine Winds, Metal Blade pretty much DID promote them that way, not just wanted too. Please tell me he was joking with the Djent. I just don't see it working with HoB.
