Under the file "Metal Eccentricities" Finntroll figures as a top contender, these Finns have managed the way to create playful yet aggressive music, using as a base a Finnish polka rhythm called Hummpa, the wide array of instruments these trolls use is quite amazing, to name a few I would have to say accordion, mouth harp, flutes, clarinets, herty gerties even a honky-tonk piano.

This over-the-top Finnish Folk Metal act has returned to give us their new effort after a while of silence, the result of the long hiatus is simply amazing, Finntroll has improved in every single aspect of their music.
Nattfödd (meaning Nightborn), is an album which may carry the listener to distant woods, were trolls and evil creatures are drinking in a wooden table.
Why do I mention the drinking? Because many of the songs have those gang choruses, reminiscent of those Viking Metal "drinking ale in the name of Odin" chorus style.

Let's take as an example "Eliytres" begins with this playful almost circus-like tune, but then the Black Metal vocals enters the arena, and together they create a unique song that flow seamlessly alongside the whole atmosphere these Finns manage to create.
"Grottans Barn" (Children Of The Cave) begins with the use of mouth harp, and when this mid-paced song reaches it's peak is easy to understand why Finntroll, after few albums are such recognized act among the scene, this song also features cleaner singing than the rest of the album, which, fits the music perfectly.
Other great songs are the joyous "Fiskarens Fiende" and "Trolhammaren" song already featured in the Ep of the same name.

Definitively Finntroll will earn much more respect in the music scene with this excellent album, the good thing about this album is that you can sense these guys having fun while doing this, it really does, every melody, every passage or chant is truly enjoyable, makes you want to stand up and dance.

A must for any fan of Folk Metal, Finntroll created something really interesting here, for anyone interested in hearing some original music, and for anybody that have never listened to Finntroll, I strongly recommend starting with this one, what a nice surprise from the woods.

These dudes had been mixing up their polka-blasting madness for a few years, but this album takes their hybrid sound to insane new depths. More extreme on the metal end while more goofy and whimsical on the hummpa end of things. This is their best album to date. Hopefully the new release for '07 will measure up.
