You know when your mum used to tell you to take an umbrella with you before going out, even if it was obviously sunny outside? And you refused because you were already a big boy, and still ended up walking back home in the rain? Well you might act all grown-up and stuff now, but trust mommy, you need some of this in your life, you just don't know it yet. My motherly instincts stop right there: I want you to listen to Trap Them, but I am not going to explain to you what hardcore is all about. I am nonetheless willing to tell you how they play it. Sit down.
Blissfucker is the band's fourth full-length release, and they don't seem to have weakened one bit. The vocals are powerful, the riffs are furious, the bass is omnipresent, and the drums relentless. Yeah, they're aggressive alright. It's a hardcore band. What else is new? Well, honestly, not that much. Unless you think the perfect blend between the abrasiveness of HxC and the heaviness of metal is new. In which case, you're wrong anyway.
This album is not devoid of groove and catchiness despite some parts that could almost sound as if they were taken out of a - don't crucify me - misanthropic black metal record. Yes, I am talking typical black metal riffs and insanely fast blast-beating accompanied by long screams. You look surprised. Just listen to "Organic Infernal" for example.
You understand now, that when I said "nothing new", I was not implying the eleven tracks were dull and lacking in variation. Extremely heavy sludge-like moments, as well as energetic pure hardcore punk bits are here to slow down or pick up the pace whenever it's needed. You'd think there would be breaks to help you get your breath back, but you're wrong. When Trap Them decelerates, it is only to amp the heaviness up.
I personally can't find anything majorly off-putting that could be worth mentioning in this review. Those of you who don't like the genre will find plenty to complain about, but Blissfucker will be amply satisfying for the few hardcore aficionados and aficionadas amongst you.
You have been warned, take your umbrella, because these unstoppable Blissfuckers will rain on you very hard.
