It's been a hell of a long time since the last album, don't even know if I'm still excited for this.

I've noticed that, ever since Resurrection Through Carnage, all of their albums have had 3 words in the title (that includes the Unblessing the Purity EP). Wonder if that's on purpose.

Yeah, but this is death metal, not black metal.

Giving it the first spin right now. I like the music but the vocals don't give me anything. I'm hoping that'll get better after a few runs. If not, this will be no album for me

Probably would give it a high 7. It's already made clear that the vocals are super weak, but after about half-way or so, I got used to them, and now the album's atmosphere reminds me more of old-school death metal (especially the more gloomy bands like God Macabre) than RTC or NMF ever did, even if the album isn't even remotely as good as them.

Still place it over The Fathomless Mastery, though, because even with better vocals that album was straight-up unmemorable and disappointing. This is slightly better, or more interesting at least.

EDIT: Alright, this is way better than The Fathomless Mediocrity now.

The guitar tone sounds in between Nightmares Made Flesh and Unblessing the Purity. Actually sounds pretty good to me, but still doesn't sound quite like old-school death. As far as modern death metal goes, though, it sounds pretty good. Vicious and all that.

Vocals are still disappointing compared to Akerfeldt and Tagtgren, but after you get used to them, they're not so bad. To be honest, a lot of old-school death metal vox from a lot of the popular bands were kinda shit, too. Nick's are less powerful than I'd like them to be, but at least they fit the style.

As a whole, the album is probably a bit better than the Fathomless Mastery. Gets a high-7/low-8 from me. Overall fun album to listen to.

Their EPs are still, by far, the best things they've ever done.

Interesting indeed - the bits and pieces that we got before the actual release were kind of a letdown, but the album itself sounds solid

What do you mean? Breeding Death and Resurrection Through Carnage sounded WAY more old-school then this (especially the former). That's original Bloodbath. How does this sound too old-school compared to that?

Solid record. I was prepared for disappointment but instead I was fairly satisfied after listening. Heavy as shit and Nick's vocals have definitely grown on me.

I agree, but a band's original sound is merely a constituent of the influences on how someone perceives the band's sound as a whole. That being said, every record up until this one features a hefty amount of Bloodbath's signature groove and melody.

What I meant by my original and misleading post was that about a third of this record sounds like hackneyed revivalist old-school death...

I have to say those vocals pretty much ruined this for me, but although Akerfeldt became a hipster, the death metal show must go on, right?

I like this album quite a bit! I actually love NIck's vocals here, his gurgle has a nice juicy texture to it.

This isn't pop music, and yet everyone is so concerned about the vocals. Sounds great

I find it funny that this album has a worse rating than The Fathomless Mastery already when it's at least as good if not better. Are people that upset about the vocals?

Vocals are great. I really like that oldschool style. Some songs are really catchy and fast-paced and some of them are doomy. I think overall it is an enjoyable album.

I think Nick's vocals are amazing. His cavernous croak matches the hellish lyrics perfectly. The songwriting isn't as catchy as "Eaten," "Ways to the Grave," or "Treasonous," so I think that doesn't help people's appreciation for it. Each to his own.

They are terrible and ruin what is perfectly good Entombed worship.

If you recall, Entombed had sort of shit vocals, too.

Well, once you get past the shock of listening to Bloodbath songs without the fat growls we got used to, you realize Nick's style works with them. The songwriting is admirable as always, while not excellent I'll be replaying this one a lot.

Not all - they're monstrous bellows.

Someone doesn't remember Same Difference, Uprising, Serpent Saints, etc. Now those were weak, watered-down vocals.

Total Death Exhumed's lyrics are full of really cheesy metal references, from bands to Cryptopsy with "None So Vile", to Entombed with "On a left hand path", to Metallica with "A summoning through the never".

I'm not sure if it's cool or retarded.

Anyway, someone should make a list of all the references they make in that song. I'd be interested in seeing the ones I'm sure I missed.

Unexpectedly, a really good album. I also changed my mind about Nick's vocals, they're filthy and rotten and perfectly fit the music.

That's pretty cool IMO. Megadeth did that with their own song titles (Victory) and Sabaton did it with band/album titles. Always good fun to spot the reference.

Some of them are a little more vague, like "Denial of the living" which I'm guessing is a reference to Death's "Denial of Life", and "Slaughter of the Womb", which I'm assuming is related to Cannibal Corpse's "Butchered at Birth".

Ha, nice catch. Is this something you found out or was it "confirmed" somewhere? It's pretty obvious now that you mention it but it can be missed since this is what Death Metal lyrics have been about for some decades already
The "Only death is real" may be a reference to Troops Of Doom by Sepultura, I can add. I also like when Nick screams "Global fucking Bloodbath".
By the way, you didn't mention it but it also says "Six Feet Under", nothing to say about that one really.

The "Only death is real" may be a reference to Troops Of Doom by Sepultura

I assume it is a reference to Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost. It is a slogan used by Tom G. Warrior at the time and also the title of a book on Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost.

It's not as bad as I first thought it would be, but still, vocals could be better, nothing like Mikael but, oh well, who knows? It might grow on me.
