What Metal compilations does everyone here like? It may be a sampler, a cd that came with a magazine, or a compilation by a record company or anything else.

My favourite compilation is Battle Metal II. It came free when I bought an issue of Metal Hammer (an issue that didn't look as bad for once). It turned out that the issue was as bad as usual but it came with an awesome compilation cd, which made it completely worth my $10. The cd has lots of tracks that have the 'Battle Metal' theme. More tracks that have the lyrical theme of Battles and stuff, rather than songs of the disputed 'style'. It has some great songs from such bands as Venom, Sonata Arctica, Korpiklaani, Demons and Wizards, Kamelot, Mob Rules, Saxon, Primal Fear and contains the very song 'Battle Metal' by Turisas. They chose some great new songs that have the battle theme, and managed to dodge my current Metal collection almost entirely!

Another compilation that I have and like is a 1995 Earache sampler. This is a thread about discussing your favourite Metal Compilations and basically everything about them. So what is everyone else's thoughts?

Im not usually a fan of metal compilations ... Theres so many different bands, Its just basically impossible IMO to collate them....

However, I have to agree with you Necromancer_S... The Battle Metal compilations were pretty good...

I recently bought my first metal compilation: MTV2 headbangers' Ball. I didn't know much of the bands on the album, so I thought it would be great to learn to know some new bands. Unfortunately I don't really like the album. In the future I'll stick to 'real' albums I guess...

Well I do like copilations , I just like the variety , and also I like about some copilations that you get to meet new bands , like for example I like the Identity copilation I think is from Century Media , they always have great bands and the cd is only for like $4 dollars that's great ...also sometimes I make my own put lot's of your favorite bands and then you have a cd for life so yeah I like copilations ....

I agree with Icewings with that you can meet new bands. A couple of years ago i got 'MTV's Headbangers Ball Volume 1' compilation, and some of the bands that i heard on their have now grown on me alot, for example Lacuna Coil 'Heavens A Lie' was feature and i loved it from the first listen and playied it many times over and they now Lacuna Coil is one of my favourite bands. Although i did get alot of song/bands on that compilation that i didnt like, same goes with what was on 'Headbangers Ball Volume 2'.

Another sample cd that i got with a Metal Hammer magazine was 'Battle Metal 3: Winter Assault' which the 'Battle Metal' compilation was mentioned above, is a good one that has a heap of cool bands, alot that i got into and wanted to listen to more.

A friend of mine has Battle Metal 3 and that sounded pretty sweet as well. I noticed that about two or three of the songs on BM3 were off BM2 though! Like that Kamelot song for example. But yeah, you're quite right about compilations and discovering new bands. If I see a compilation with about half of the bands that I like on it, or have been meaning to check out, then I will generally get the cd. And so after listening to it, I often like the stuff from the unknown bands and maybe start to like/get into some bands that I'd never really known before.

Totally agree, Battle Metal II from Metal Hammer was fantastic. I really liked it.

I typically don't buy compiliations, but the odd time I do. Here's the ones I have.

A Tribute to Abba - Fantastic stuff. Sinergy, Therion, Metallium, a bunch of unknowns, all Abba covers. Good stuff.

Louder Than The Dragon: Best of Limb Music Productions - Wasn't bad, all speedy power metal stuff. Nothing really stood out, but hey... it was on sale.

Hearts of Metal: The Best Metal Ballads vol. 1 - First disc was awesome. Bunch of ballads from Angra, Iced Earth, Angel Dust, and so forth. Second disc was a bit lacking, but had Doro, Edguy and Nevermore. I only bought it originally because the cover has a naked chick laying back against a dragon. Which is totally metal.

I really was impressed with the 2nd MTV Headbangers Ball [Vol. 2], it's got In Flames [Soundtrack to your Escape In Flames...but Still...] Dimmu Borgir, etc. It really opened my eyes to even more metal, it did great by me.

Yeah, well I usually buy just normal band's albums, seeing as I still have so many to aquire, but I do think that Metal Compilations are a good idea, and often they are cheap or come free with things, so that's ok. I haven't often gone out and purchased a $30 compilation. Although I once saw 'Fenriz Presents The Best Of Old School Black Metal' and I knew I had to have that. It just had so many good tracks on it.

It probably doesn't require a new thread. It was a good idea to just post it here

Talking about the Battle Metal compilations, I got the third one the other day. I don't think it's as good as the second one, but it has some good moments. Some of the stuff is different songs by same bands (or in the case of Demons And Wizards and Kamelot, the same song!) and some is entirely new stuff. I especially like the last track which was Falkenbach - Leaknishendor. I think that the Battle Metal compilations are the best thing Metal Hammer magazine has ever done. I can't say the magazine itself is all that good.

Would 'Crushing The Holy Trinity' count? I've not heard everything of it yet, but what I heard was good (Deathspell Omega & Stabat Mater).

IMO it would count, because it is ONE hell of a compilation. DO & SM were good. Clandestine Blaze I found disappointing, but fucking hell, Mgla is awesome and Exordium was a great and Musta Surma was good too. And I loved the packaging of the three cd set.

Another great compilation is IMO From the Entrails to the Dirt featuring the following:

Malicious Secrets
1. Interior Crack Psycho Angel Bitch
2. Rejection And Raising Perdition Blaze
3. Send Me To Hell - Day Of Wine And Thorns
Antaeus
4. Gates To The Outside
Mütiilation
5. My Way (Frank Sinatra cover)
6. Tears Of A Melancholic Vampire
Deathspell Omega
7. Mass Grave Aesthetics

Although I am not a fan of Mütiilation the cover of My Way is so creppy it is awesome.

ill buy them if theres any bands on them i like or if they have songs of a genre i like and have beands iv never heard beofre, like the battle metal trillogy, the 2nd one was best, i think.

an interesting one i got at christmass was 'a brutal christmas' its hilarious, ive never heard any of the bands, but they are diffrent styles (bm, dm, power metal etc ) covers of christmass carols, very funny, good when drunk at a christmas party or for some random listening!
