Mmmm, no, most of Katatonia's album covers don't have a crow/bird or such on them.

4 full lengths out of 10 has birds on it... That's a lot.

Only 4 albums have, but the crow is like their mascotte.

That was really average...

Big fan of newer Katatonia, but this song is kind of average, maybe a little above average.
Then again, a lot of their songs are growers, so maybe it just requires more listens.

Shame. All that I am reading is 'Its a grower'. Why can't they just put out something cohesive or explosive? Has age caught up with this group already? This is generic with a capital G!

I don't see how a group's "legendary" status avails them to have a recurring motif on their album covers, but a less "legendary" group is not allowed to?

Besides, I am not a huge fan of modern-day Katatonia, but for me, modern Katatonia is still infinitely better than modern Maiden, and I prefer old Katatonia to old Maiden too, so yeah.

Nah I'm not comparing their popularity, music or anything... just the fact both bands have recurring imagery on their album covers. You can't compare these two bands.

You're almost right! That's what happened to DT as well and many others!

I'm so fucking tired of metalheads throwing the "sellout" accusation around whenever bands go in a direction that dissatisfies them or the music seems a bit more "accessible". Really, people are still whining about Katatonia 15+ years after their change of sound? "Fans" only there for the death doom should have stopped following the band around 1998-2001 - go listen to something else!

But no, as always, the ungratified people have to blame the band's integrity as if they had X-ray vision into their personal and artistic motivation; they feel entitled to judge with finality that the band "betrayed" them. Of course in their narrow minds, only extreme underground music is "pure" and once a band has success they're a "commercial product". This type of thinking is neither critical nor individualistic - all it represents is a "inverted Hollywood/pop entertainment" lazy BS subversion, just as being extreme for extreme's sake is lazy subversive music.

If you actually write music or do anything creative, you know that inspirations change over time and it becomes hard to find new, fresh sources and forms of expression. 10 albums in and the music struggles to be original; Katatonia have never denied this and Anders himself has freely admitted the challenge. If you feel that originality has been curbed for this band/album, that's an understandable request (though not mine) and likely you'd dislike any new material from bands with long careers/catalogues. But don't accuse music not to your liking as just "sellout". This nonsense attitude needs to fuck off.

Katatonia didn't sell out.

I think people believe this is genuinely average material irrespective of their previous material. I, for one, only enjoy Viva and TGCD, yet I find this very plain.

It's already here

I thought the two new songs from their forthcoming album are a improvement compared to the last record which was mostly pretty plain and uninteresting. Give me Last Fair Deal Gone Down, The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness & Night Is The New Day anytime when listening to this band.
Hopefully this new record will push them back in that direction, fingers crossed.
