Sirenia - Reveal New Singer

As promised, Sirenia just revealed their new lead singer. And she is... Emmanuelle Zoldan. And not Liv Kristine as some might have guessed/hoped for. Emmanuelle Zoldan isn't exactly new to the band as she has been cooperating with them since their second album An Elixir For Existence as part of the choir. From now on, she fronts the band and can be heard on the band's forthcoming new album, Dim Days Of Dolor.

The band explained: "We are very proud and pleased to finally announce Emmanuelle Zoldan as Sirenia's new lead singer. Our cooperation goes back 13 years, to the recordings of our second album An Elixir For Existence. She has been a part of the choir on all our albums since then. She also did some lead vocals for the band on our EP Sirenian Shores, on our cover version of Leonard Cohen's song 'First we take Manhattan'. And from now on she will also take the role as full time lead singer for Sirenia. Emmanuelle is musically educated at Aix en Provence and Marseille Conservatories (4 years) and specialized at C.N.I.P.A.L Professional school of opera (2 years) She also made a career singing at various operas in France for many years and have collaborated with several bands and projects. Emmanuelle can handle lots of different musical styles and various techniques in addition to classical and opera, and this has had a big influence on our new album. The album was finished recently and we can't wait to share the music and our new sound with you. This is without doubt the most diverse Sirenia album to date, and this album marks a new beginning and new direction for the band in many ways."

But it's really odd, bucause there was a lot of conicidences. Maybe they will have a duet with Liv. Or there's something bigger going on Yeah, ToT next.

Am I the only one who did not think Liv will join them? Never even thought about it though. Although I can say that I did not expect the new songstress either. Never heard of her before. Anyway, the most intriguing aspect here is not the new vocalist, but what it says at the end 'the most diverse album'. Sirenia could use some sound expansion even though I loved the previous 2 albums.

Exactly what I've been thinking, but I do expect this album to be one of Sirenia's best efforts so far.

She ain't a newbie at all... As written in the announcement, she's indeed been singing backing vocals pretty much since the beginning. And that's actually a good thing to have someone who's an insider and who knows the band. Might even be they're going to go back to what they did during the early years.

Nope, never crossed my mind either. Why on Earth would Liv join Sirenia? Can't believe anyone suspected that.... If anything, one could hope Vibeke would join Sirenia, but Liv Kristine.... c'mon.

Anyway, excited to hear the new album.

That I surely doubt. Hearing the samples, it seems like they are going for a softer sound, reminiscent on album 3 to 5. An insider is ok to have, but if she is competent. Her degrees and studies do not impress me. On the samples she sounded rather stale, almost bored. Going back to the sound of the first two albums is highly unlikely mainly because I doubt Veland can reproduce the atmosphere and mood of the debut especially.

Yep... you never step into that same river a second time. I just browsed for some crappy videos of Emmanuelle performing this year and she does have difficulties adapting to the range. It's understandable that she's more or less a last minute replacement for Ailyn who has a higher range and, as a result, they haven't properly managed making the songs suitable for Emmanuelle. However, it's essentially not a bad idea to go for a singer with a different vocal range and style just to explore something different artistically.

And I just found a video of Ailyn singing 'My Lost Lenore'... I don't even know why some people are comparing her to Vibeke because Ailyn does a great job. I don't actually get why she left Sirenia. She has so much potential...

It is like a chance out of 1000. Paradise Lost recently went back to the roots with The Plague Within which is the best thing they did since Draconian Times. However, in the case of Sirenia, I would've been contempt if they continued the raw sound developed on Perils. It was not quite up to the quality of the first two records, but they were good. I haven't checked Emanuelle's performances. I might do. However, there IS a reason why she has done backing vocals for such a long time. There are singers with a different vocal register that can sing other people's songs. Although they are not so easy to find.

Ailyn was good when I first heard her on The 13th Floor and she improved tremendously ever since. The problem has never been her voice, but Veland's sometimes poor song-writing. I think the guy needs another source of inspiration, maybe get another guy to be involved in the song-writing to come up with fresh new ideas.
