Cool, a new Summoning album

If you're into synth-heavy (re: cheesy) atmospheric "black" metal with heavy folk leanings that aim for an epic feeling, then this is definitely going to tickle your fancy.

For me, it just seems like it's trying way too hard to be what it is. Summoning comparisons are definitely fair, just as much as Bal-Sagoth on diazepam fits their sound. That 90's midi video game soundtrack style isn't inherently enjoyable and that vibe of trying to bank on the nostalgia of a specific age demographic never goes away after the final track plays out. Prison-era Burzum comes to mind in the worst ways.

The one thing I liked about this was the mixing of the vocals. Sometimes that sort of cavernous/underwater grit brings levity and depth to these sorts of growls, and it works here.

I thought we were done with the Summoning rips. It's worse than the tail end of the blackgaze craze.
