In late September 2019, I gave a glowing review to a new album with monochrome artwork released by an established post-metal band. Given all the chaos that has come with 2020, I'm experiencing a surprising degree of déjà vu right now.

A bit later than expected, but we finally have the second part of the Phanerozoic project from The Ocean, and a worthy sibling to Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic it is. "Jurassic | Cretaceous" in particular is a fantastic demonstration of what this collective are capable of.

I dig it a lot on first listen, but Phanerozoic I was a grower of an album and I anticipate this one being so too

Albums with that character in the title have been a menace to best of lists since Infestus released E x | I s t back in 2011, it's very annoying.

I don't think we should be changing official album titles just because the way lists are set up on the site. We should change our efforts to adapt to the album title, not the other way around.

This isn't the first time it happened.

Great album, slightly less heavier than I have come to expect from The Ocean but a truly enjoyable album nonetheless.

As a developper, I totally agree with that comment. I feel disappointed at myself when I go for the hacky solution like this.

Plus, The Ocean albums are already mis-named on many websites because of the many special characters, it's a shame MS would also fail here just because lists can't read it correctly..

Good album, not as good as part I. But the best thing Jonas Renkse has done these last few years was the two songs with The Ocean LOL

They do so many great things which are all in a constant state of being held back by these poor vocal deliveries. The growls are seemingly always off pitch and lack the depth to complement the crushing nature of their harshest moments and the nasally cleans just come across as goofy and distract from interesting lyrical imagery. Post-metal that practically begs to be instrumental -- and thankfully a significant portion of it is. Also apparently they still release instrumental versions of their albums, so there's that.

At least the bass gets to take a walk every now and then and the brass section creates a sense of poignancy to go alongside the synth-heavy atmospherics.

Haha, it's funny, for me the vocal delivery is just perfect and exactly what I would want from a Post Metal outfit. I also liked the instrumental section a lot.
