it just came to me right now, why are there more male metal fans than female? the only logical explanation i can give is that girls are softer and prefer lighter music in general...

I think that girls can be as extreme as we, But the world culture isn't developed enough to have a 50/50 ratio. Conservative parents also has something to do, most in traditional cultures.

i think it has to do with what chris amber said just above, probably girls are more into softer stuff, for example some of the girl metalheads i know are like into heavy, or prog, going as far as goth, but almost none are into like death or black...

Well.........the answer is simple, most metal require much testosterone [which girls obviously lack] lol. So yeah........well that's what I think. Metal is very 'manly' also haha. Most ov the time woman who are into Heavy Metal and Rock N' Roll are often hard drinkers and heavy smokers [most females tend not to be like that] so it's mostly that crowd which it attracts [i speak ov course from experience and what I notice around me] i love metal girls btw

Because I don't know Seriously, I don't want to sound like sexist, but really, most girls I know prefer goth/power and some less aggressive genres, somewhere I read that metal help people to get rid of the anger and aggression, maybe boys naturally have more aggression and they need more metal to get rid of that. Also, just imagine this, you have 8 year old brother and sister, show them Iron Maiden cover for Killers, imagine how boy will react, and how girl will react.

Come on, where are the ladies on this thread My take on this, well, at first the metal scene was dominated with lots of excess testostrone for a number of reasons. We had Judas Priest in their leather pants and vests and their overly macho attitude, it was probably quite intimidating to females of the 1970's. Then we have Black Sabbath with their very dark and for back then explicit lyrics, and that probably scared away almost any woman back in those days. In essence metal became a huge club for guys only, not that we didn't want them in here, it's just that the nature of the music seemed too masculine for a long time. It has only been recently that female metal musicians have come into the scene on any sort of large scale. In the next 10 years or so I am sure the male to female ratio will have evened out a bit.

Account deleted Written by Valentin B on 04.08.2007 at 20:28 ok its a sad fact of the genre, yes there are more guys than girls in metal. But think its got more to do with the fact that in the 80s they were discriminated against very harshly. Its still exists in the modern scene. But there are more women who enjoy metal these days than 5 years ago. That is due to the fact that more women are joining and starting bands... It is great to see. Its becoming more accepted nowdays with the likes or Kittie offering female rolemodels in metal

Still no girls voicing their opinion on the matter... I do think metal in general, well extreme metal, appeals to a tougher audience and in general boys are more hard-core than girls maybe that's the reason.

Where are the ladies? Here Personally, I've always been interested in "extreme" music, metal or not... And I have more difficulty getting into softer genres... I have to admit I didn't like Black because of its vocals, and that was just 6 months ago... But I learnt how to enjoy it. You guys have said things and they were not wrong... I would add something though. Girl are influenced by their parents much.. that's true. But one shouldn't forget TV... Do you ever see Metal girls on MTV's clips? Isn't there a way they HAVE to behave and dress to be considered as "normal" girls? I've always appeared like the "outsider" at school, because I loved to bang my head to Rammstein (it was my favourite band at the time), instead of dancing to pop music... If only they were used to hearing Metal from time to time.. they would like it more. My older brother used to listen to Iron Maiden and Metallica. But he left home for another country before I could even understand it was Metal (I was 8). And when I grew up, I always tried... to listen to what he used to lilke.. just to know what it was, and to... have something in common with him. I have always listened to Metal without being a "metalhead", just because that was what I grew up with... But I really got into it when things started going wrong with me. And instead of getting into the more Gothic-like music, I got into the extreme genres because I needed something aggressive : Nu Metal and Hardcore at first, then Rammstein and Industrial, then Thrash, then Death ... etc. I should also talk about ... the guys I have been in love with. Yes yes... I was already obssessed by long hair (since I first watched "Highlander "on tv, when I was 9 ). And usually... guys with long hair are metalheads... Spending time with them must have influenced me much as well...

Just another sneaky way of trying to get guys to post pics in your "Guys with Long Hair" thread huh? But you do have a point. It's normal for girls trying to be feminine, and extreme metal is anything but that, so that could be a possible reason for the absence of girls in the extreme metal scene. Guys usually try to be macho, fearless and, well, generally masculine and i guess those characteristics couls apply to extreme metal.

It was not "a sneaky way of trying to get guys to post in" my favourite thread . But of course, feel free to! Everyone should! . By the way, you have to post a picture there... Don't you remember our contract? Anyway, back on-topic. You are right... It's the reason why I was considered as less feminine... In a way, it is not wrong, as I don't listen to what girl usually listen to. But, when you think of it seriously, Metal doesn't change anything at all. Even my clothes are... let's say "normal". My neck might hurt much more often than the other girls, but that's all .

As ..HumanError.. said, TV is veeery important in this aspect, since it influences people (especially kids or teenagers) very deeply. It's true that you won't see many metal girls on TV, but rather "L'Oreal, because I'm worth it" girls, looking nice and perfect and so delicate. That's the stereotype of a woman in society, and young girls tend to be influenced by that. Also parents take their part in this. When they have children, if it's a boy, the toys he'll have are trucks, balls, "Action Man", fake guns, etc; whereas if it's a girl she'll have dolls, teddy bears, fake make-up, etc. Parents start making a difference since we're little and that's what grows in us. Boys grow up being more aggresive or tough and girls being soft and delicate, and it's all a matter of education. As metal isn't especially delicate, it doesn't appeal to most girls, but only because of the education they've had. When there's a girl that doesn't accept these stereotypes and wants to be different, being herself, maybe listening to metal, then is when she becomes the black sheep of the family, of the school and sometimes even of her group of friends. From my experience, my mum has always been trying to change my mind for me to stop listening to metal and dressing like I dress since I got into it, but what she doesn't understand is that I'm comfortable now, and that I found my place. So yeah, mums have something to do with the fact that there are less girls in metal than boys. I hope I helped a bit

I agree with the parents influence on this. I just have to compare me with my brother. He could listen to anything (including heavy metal obviously), everything was pretty normal but when I started to listen to heavy metal my parents asked a lot of questions and were suddenly interested. It has to do with their expectations and with the model they impose us, when particularly a girl exists outside the moulds they made for us its always tricky. There is this nostalgia in the parents, their little girl is not what they pictured it would be. Luckily in my case time did help. Over the years they got used to the idea that I wasnt going to be the "regular girl next door" and its not just because of the music i listen to. One of the other reasons that might explain this, that there are more men listening to metal, is the fact that some women are not willing to experiment beyond their limits. They associate this type of music with whatever negative aspect they heard their friends speak about and just reject it superficially. I know this because I see my female friends doing it. Girls are just as influenced as boys but they seem to risk less. I don't know, its not a very exact answer for this.

yeahh girls were more into glam as K7 said. Woman seemed to always liked Feminine looking guys Just like how they were attracted to the Glam Rockers, now they attracted to the Emo guys. I like glam too, but for it's cheesiness and rock n' rollish approach. But anyways, yeah girls can be rugged too ya know and to me that can be somewhat attractive. I have friend in Abaco who listens to Rock N' Roll along with some old metal annnd reggae annd rap ; but lol just cuz you are a girl doesn't mean you're always ga be into glam-and-glitter things so so much. My mom told me that her big sister [my aunt] back when she was a teen and used to smoke behind her parents' back she would listen to Judas Priest and AC/DC . I found that hard to believe as now she is into mostly reggae lol. But yeah you see my point.

Account deleted Written by [user id=160] on 06.08.2007 at 16:43 I would rather say that girls don't like emo guys... Unless they are emo themselves... A girl who is attracted by emo guys is lesbian, almost . I am sure that most of women would say they prefer a tall muscled guy with a high rate of testosterone, than a frail, effeminate guy... But they do want them to behave like women ... "Oh I wish my boyfriend was more understanding.. more sensitive... more caring .." etc etc blah blah blah... And I don't understand that. That's maybe why they liked the 80's style... Hairy long-haired men, playing guitar and riding motorbikes . Let's forget the super ticght leather pants... But I think it was not enough to get them into Heavy Metal... so they just stopped at the level of Rock, Glam and Hard Rock. Heavy Metal... was just too heavy . But there are so many exceptions to invalidate my arguments... I am one of them myself. And all I said sounded.. quite sexist. Full of stereotypes. I should have kept it quiet.

07.08.2007 - 04:03 Written by Valentin B on 06.08.2007 at 11:00 Truth!! (some kind of off topic!) when I was younger boys from my streets were in war with boys from the other. We were gathering every day and fight with them, usually, first we throw rocks on each other, than huge fist fights or fights with sticks. Sometimes, when rock hit me or someone hit me with fist or stcik really hard in my face I was going home bloody and dad only asked me who won? or did you have good time? Same with older brother, although he was much more extreme than me, first time arrested at age 15. While situation with my younger sister was totally different. Once she was invloved in some girl fight in her school, no one was hurt, and my mom and dad were in school every day to ask what happened, which fault was that (my sisters ), and escort her to school every day. Back to topic When I started listening to music, my arents bought me guitar, never had problem with violent t-shirts, posters, cd covers, my first Dark Funeral Cd was my father's gift, Later my sister came into metal, and totally different thing, my mom was bitching about clothes, music, her friends, (and she always loved my extreme friends, girlfriends...), she always complained about her hair... Parents probably (not necessarily) have big influence on this

like pretty much everything there is the good old nature/nurture thing going on and of course both nature and nurture play important roles in this gender difference of course it is the biology of the male more so than the female to do the high risk or perhaps sensation seeking activities - testosterone, etc. you know it all.. but also there could be upbringing or even quality of life. for example more males may listen to metal to produce more adrenaline to cope with the stress that is imposed on them moreso than females there are many many many different variables that can influence things like this.. many many many indeed.. personally I would way it more towards the nature side but everyone has their opinion however wrong it may be. hahahaha

If you look at a lot of bands with female musicians you'll most likely see more girls that are fans then you would if it was an all guy band. I think that the whole macho attitude with most mainstream/ famous metal bands is a good reason why not a lot of girls like metal.

07.08.2007 - 15:39 Written by selken on 04.08.2007 at 23:49 I actually agree with this. I was lucky enough to be raised by a pretty liberal mother, but a lot of girls/women (even indirectly) are discouraged from being "hardcore." Men tend to focus on bodies and action, women tend to focus on character and feeling. This is an extremely broad gender generalization, and of course everyone is different, but it is usually true (at least in my own experience), and I think this has mostly to do with socially indoctrinated gender roles than with any sort of gender-based predisposition to any particular thing. 07.08.2007 - 15:46 Written by Baz Anderson on 07.08.2007 at 04:06 I don't think biology has anything to do with it. Gender roles are almost as ancient as our race itself, and there's evidence of that. Think back to the hunter/gatherer paradigm. Men hunted, women gathered. And yet there were extremely successful societies where women were fierce, dedicated and trained hunters, and men good and capable gatherers. But societies where matriarchal power dominated were few (and still are) far between. The influx of Christianity brought this change about even more, because people's ideas of divinity changed, and the patriarchal influence of divinity was brought heavily into play in everyday society, rather than a focus on either a balance or on matriarchal divinity. There are so many things that play a part in gender roles. And what makes you think in any way that females don 't experience stress? There's way more pressure put on us than on males - take a look in a magazine. Yeesh.
