2007 has been a very good Metal year so far, certainly not the best but still mostly great. The best releases so far are: 3. Symphony X Paradise Lost The album which got me into this band, very good and certainly one of their best! 2. Dream Theater Systematic Chaos I'm such a sucker for this band, it's one of their least good albums... it's still awesome! 1. Watain Sworn to the Dark Always! One of the best albums ever by Sweden's best band! Currently waiting for the new Nightwish album!

I think this is a really good year for metal - there have already been some fantastic albums released this year Ensiferum, Freedom Call, Iron Savior, Korpiklaani, Masterplan, Mithras, Symphony X, Turisas, Vital Remains, Wizard have all released great albums.. I am missing a load out as well, the Legion Of The Damned album, Sarpanitum, Finntroll, Devildriver, Behemoth, Akercocke and more are great as well.. and there are still to come. the new Primal Fear album is really quite good and there are even more to be released as well

might be a boring year over all, but i'm quite happy with it. behemoth- Apostasy clutch - Beale Street to Oblivion jesu - Conqueror samael - solar soul - their best album of the last decade red harvest's a greater darkness isn't a bad album. others i still need to get/check out: Obituary - Xecutioner's Return Nile - itylphalic Municipal Waste - art of partying new High on Fire and Darkthrone's annual album still to come. i believe Exodus also has one in the works. oh, and of course, my current favorite of the year, Neurosis "Given to the Rising." Frankly, I'm happy if there are five really good albums that come out each year... I think 2007 will hit that mark.

So far the only stuff I really love is: Alcest, Deathspell Omega, Mayhem, Shining and perhaps Candlemass (don't own it yet). Hoping for Drudkh and Evile (have high hopes!) EDIT: Forgot Keen of the Crow, loved it, but don't think I'll buy it. Have suspicions its about to growing boring soon.

The new Farmakon is Excellent. Better than their debut album I think. The King Diamond is as expected, not mindblowing but very enjoyable. Evocation's awaited album was ok. Symphony X's Paradise Lost was good, I'm just disappointed there's no 20 mins epic. Nothing to add about the new Turisas which is neat Obituary's Xecutioner's Return was as expected, good. That's 2007 for me so far. Awaiting for the two new Demilich songs.

pfft silly little spammers... Aborted - Slaughter and Apparatus This album was a great return to form. Dave Haley juiced them up nicely on drums, and Sven still sounds great. Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb This is probably the album of the year. It's fast, groovy, catchy and all of the songs mix together well. Stoma/Screaming Afterbirth split This keeps on getting delayed, but I've heard a few songs and it sounds very promising. Immolation - Shadows in the Light This is the best album they've made in a while, and one of the best death metal albums of the year. I love the vocals and the production quality is savage. Dekapitator - The Storm Before the Calm This is the best thrash album of the year so far. The vocals are a little iffy, but the ridiculous guitar solos make up for everything. Odious Mortem - Cryptic Implosion I was blown away when I first listened to this album. They managed to make very creative and technical music, but they kept the brutality they always had. Malevolent Creation - Doomsday X Fuck this album is fast; Dave Culross is one of my favorite drummers and he does not disappoint. There's also a bunch of guitar solos, courtesy of Phil. Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapien Even though this album isn't nearly as good as their old stuff, it still blows away Anomalies. I can't wait to hear new Obituary, Severe Torture, Judas Priest, and....TORSOFUCK!

Kamelot - Ghost Opera Deffinitely a masterpiece. More oriented into Prog, IMO, but still great. Kamelot has deffinitely earned the place they got now as one of Power Metal's finest. Symphony X - Paradise Lost It's no secret that I don't like prog, but this album deffinitely captured me. I heard it three times non stopping. Maybe it's because it's sound less prog IMO. Paradise Lost - In Requiem Seems like the electro era ended, and now PL are playing gothic again. Maybe a bit more oriented into their first albums, for what I catch on the vocals. Iced Earth - Overture For The Wicked This single deffinitely makes me want tha album o be released right now. And the music is more oriented into Ripper's voice. In The glorious Burden I really felt that ripper didin't fit. Pelican - City Of Echoes With a more melodic sound, less strident, more complex, but without losing that touch that makes the Palican. A great album, more mature, btu still pelican: long, slow-tem,po songs, very relacing and erotic. And despite what everyone says, Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli. Because I loved Death Cult Armaggedon and to me, ISD is like DCA2. The concept idea is interesting, despote the little creativity of the story.

Written by UnholyMenace on 23.08.2007 at 19:04 Damn, forgot all about this one, and it is still lying around at home waiting for a review (I'd better finish that one and put it on-line next week) BTW: How can people claim that Manowar - Gods Of War is a brilliant album? It only has a couple of proper songs and the rest is just filler drivel and even those proper songs are amongst the owrst they have ever written. This is most probably the WORST Manowar album EVER. another great LETDOWN is of course Megadeth - United Abominations. all songs are medium paced and add nothing to Megadeth's back catalogue. When I want to listen to rejuvinated Megadeth on album I'll go back to The System Has Failed now that one had power and fire unlike UA which is just boring from start to finish

I do agree that 2007 hasn't been that great a year in metal thus far. There's been some good releases but there's been a lot of letdowns and average albums. A few of the highlights for this year include: Shining - V: Halmstad Neurosis - Given To The Rising Marduk - Rom 5:12 Behemoth - The Apostasy Alcest - Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde Samael - Solar Soul Vintersorg - Solens Rötter Be'lakor - The Frail Tide There's a few that I'm probably missing but that's all that came to mind at the moment. I'm really looking forward to the new Vanishing Point and Limbonic Art albums. They are my two most anticipated albums for the year. On the other hand, Megadeth and Manowar's new releases were huge disappointments for me. Frankly, I wasn't expecting something huge from Megadeth but I was slightly surprised with Manowar's effort. As Marcel mentioned, a lot of the songs were just fillers. I still need to hear the new Primal Fear, Mithras, Symphony X, Deathspell Omega, Akercocke and quite a few more.

Symphony X's Paradise Lost, finally a Symphony X album that is worth my time to listen to. An impressive work by the band, and think it only took 5 years to make. So far this year my favorite has been, no suprise, Systematic Chaos. I think it is some of the best work from Dream Theater. Some of my other favorites include: Static-X - Cannibal Pain of Salvation - Scarsick Rush - Snakes & Arrows Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet Queensrÿche - Mindcrime at the Moore Devin Townsend - Devin Townsend Presents: Ziltoid the Omniscient
