The cold times are approaching (for the northern hemisphere)! As I'm relatively new to metal, I'm wondering which subgenre best suits the cold season.
What do you guys listen to during the winter?
Do you warm yourself with fiery thrash? Do you cuddle up with mesmerizing death riffs? Or do you embrace the cold with merciless black metal?
Let me know your preference and any recommendations you have when you find yourself at the heart of winter!

Dude winter us hete, this weekend in some pla3will be under minus 20. 40cm snow night come.
To me I would say black, fits that dark philosophy about days when sun dont shine, same time, it dark, gloomy atmosphere in bm. Folk as well because natura, forests,..
But in other hand it does not matter what you are listening until it's metal. Mix all genres and listen all. Spring will come maybe in may

Seasons and weather do not influence my music choices.

Depends where are you located. Summer it's more pm, hm, hr to me, but autumn comes in August, spring comes in May. Winter comes in October ends in April, so more cold n dark seasons sometime it influenced me, what I listened to.
And you know december, januari Sun dont shine literally here.

Black metal is for me the best genre for creating a dark wintery atmosphere, I agree with At The Heart Of Winter, I also found Immortal's Sons Of Northern Darkness to have a very similar style and atmosphere, other albums I found to have a good, dark wintery atmosphere that I like are; ColdWorld's Melancholie, Enslaved's Frost, Elderwind's The Magic Of Nature , and although not necessarily wintery I always found Drudkh's, Autumn Aurora to have a stunning nature themed atmosphere, but I could say the same with all their albums.

Immortal is best to put local nature and are in the lyrics. Bergen, local forests, mountain tops and fjörds

I like the concept of Blashyrkh, the fictional Kingdom that they created, alot of their lyrical themes are based on it, especially on the title song "At The Heart Of Winter", and the cover art fits the theme perfectly well, I like also how they continued the theme right through to Northern Chaos Gods. They have such a great imagination and their lyrics portray Blashyrkh very well. I add also that Immortal are the winter Gods

Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia is a good winter album, and also Empyrium - Wintersunset also. In black metal there are loads of Winter themed albums, doom metal can also express alot of wintery emotion.

I noticed this year that I automatically shift to melodic black most of the time since Autumn came. Often followed up by power metal to cheer me up a bit.

Paysage d'Hiver... It's in the damn name for fuck's sake!

But for realz... I've done some marathons on Paysage's discography during winter walks near the lake by my place that gets all frozen. It's so neat.

Dark ambient and Dungeon Synth also make for great wintery soundtracks. Probably because of their tight connection with black metal, as well. The Mortiis albums from the 90s or new projects like Old Tower do the trick for me.

For non-metal: I strongly recommend Björk's Vespertine. From the get go it sounds so frosty and majestic.

Move to Bayern in Alps.
We all choose where we live. Rod might seen more bands, are close to city life, I chose Solitude in the north. In spring in Southern Sweden ppl go in t shirts in the May, here rivers stil are covered whit ice. But it's my choice.
