I have a question for you, guys, maybe you can help: What's the difference between J-basses and P-basses?

"There's nothing like the tone of an old Fender Jazz Bass", to quote a professional bass player from around here. Other than that, I can only add some common sense things...like different wood henceforth different sound etc etc. I guess you'll have to try 'em out and hear for yourself!

Thanks for your attention, but I want to order a bass guitar from Germany, and, you know, it's hard to try them all!

P bass is more specifically, the first model of electric bass to be put on the market by fender. Precision bass, it is used more for rythm because of its more fundamental tone and driving sound. Compared to a J bass, which is basically a Jazz bass, has a brighter mid range and the tone is more suitable for...jazz, blues, classical stuff I guess.

Yeah, Sunioj is right. I play a Squire P-Bass and it really has a boomy sound. You can't really hear it, but you feel it. It kind of sucks in my hands at leat when you try to break the rhythm pattern and do something on your own, I find the tone way too straightforward. Of course, it's still a copy, not an original!

Thank you, guys! I realy needed to know it, because my new bass-guitarist wants to buy this instrument to play Heavy Metal with me. I hope, that P-bass will sound good with Heavy.

wrong. first off, fenders are only good if theyre made in america or japan. anything made elsewhere is INFERIOR.

secondly, p basses have a thicker and heavier sound thats more for rock or a heavier form of music. j basses are more mellow and twangy and whatnot and are better for jazz or a bass oriented style of music.

Oooooh, so that's why youtube's full of live performances from various death/black metal groups with bass players wielding J-basses.

What's important is that the bass player understands the bass (like a man and his best for legged friend ) and that they fit in the whole musical idea of the band and whatnot
. A good musician will get what he wants/needs in any conditions anyway.

I'm not that experienced with trying out so much basses myself. I can actually count how many basses I've tried out lol

But from what it looks like, I'm not surprised that J-basses are used in metal since I'm guessing it has a stronger treble sound.

I recently bought some real kickass books while I was at a Barnes and Noble in the states...the Everything Bass Book which has tabs for every single genre of music pretty much and the Bass Grimoire which has tabs for every single scale possible...I haven't had the time to play the shit in these books yet as I just drove back from the states (I went to Chattanooga in Tennessee) but once I do I'm sure that it will be worth it...

Find a bass forum and it's a safe bet they have a P-bass vs. J-bass thread stickied. Other than active vs. passive thread, it is THE debate.
Personally, I would record with a P but play live with a J, but that is just me.

Well i have a j-bass and i tell you that it doesn't sound good enough for metal... It's not agressive at all... I tried the p-bass of a friend of mine and am telling its more agressive than the j-b.. After all, this is my point of view... But for the non-metal- style, the j-bass is the perfect choice its a cult.

I mainly have callouses on my fretting hand. More specifically, my index and pinky. I also find that the callouses on my picking hand are on the left side of finger.

Haven't played bass for three days. Hurt my arm in a mosphit a week and a half ago, pain went away but when I started practicing again, the pain returned. Might see a doctor if doesn't go away by sunday. Pain is in my joints.

4 string basses you have limited range with a 5 or 6 you have a wider range of notes to play. I have both a 4 and 5 string and I actually play my 5 string more just for the simple fact that I am letting my 4 string collect monetary value since it was discontinued by gibson.
