Many bands have attmepted to cover the almighty Metallica song, "Master of Puppets", but which does it the best? I have only juswt recently heard Burden of Grief's cover of it, and it was pretty damn solid , but I'm interested to see how it compares to the other cover versions of it...

Well, I have not heard the Burden of Grief one yet, so I am not sure if I should vote. But out of all the ones I have heard, I liked Dream Theaters the most. I think it was the aspect of having Jordan play the guitar parts on the keys that really got me.

i think though james labrie's voice doesnt suit MOP at all IMO - it needs to be sung harshly, which labrie isnt known for, so thats why i think ( IMO ) that dream theater's version was lacking in brutatlity as such...

The two best versions for me are Dream Theater's and Apocalyptica's, simply because the bands incorporate some of their own style into the songs which makes them interesting to listen to. While I do agree that Labrie's vocals weren't that great on MoP, I think they gave some variety to the song. I mean Trivium's cover sounds way to much like the original. There's nothing different or inspiring about it, so I'd rather just listen to the original version than a mediocre version of it.

My vote goes to the Dream Theater version though. That's still my favourite out of them all. The Burden Of Grief cover isn't too bad either, but it's nothing special in my opinion.

The best Master Of Puppets cover I heard on a gig of local band few trillion years ago, I was smth like 10 years old and those retards that couldn't even play first riff right were my idols, still, I love it how it sounded...

Apocalyptica! But I always go with them for any Metallica cover that they have done maybe simply because I play the cello

Interesting...I haven't heard a lot of those covers...I've heard the Dream Theater, Apocalyptica and Primus covers and out of those I'd have to pick the Apocalyptica version simply because it would be the most unique version out of the three...

I voted for Dream Theater.
But I agree with BurbotsRevenge to the point, that James LaBrie's
style as a vocalist does not fit at all.

I don't know most of the covers of this song (only apocalyptica's) and I usually don't listen to that many covers. But it sounds great on cellos.

Dream Theater just because of the perfection of the musical instruments. I agree that Labrie's voice doesn't fit. But it was a good cover over all. But Les Claypool's version is funny with Primus.

My vote is for Apocalyptica, It is the bes MoP cover because it doesn't have any vocals on it and sounds great in every way. By the way, I do not like too much James LaBrie's vocals on that MOP album, or in Number Of The Beast (OMG when he sings "Run To The Hills" he makes me wanna punch his balls). Burden Of Grief's cover is great but nothing amazing, Trivium's cover is just a mere copy of Hetfields vocals, and so on. So Apocalyptica owns this one.

Well, none of them touch the original, at least in my opinion. But DT's version is just the best cover of it, and it is not completely emotionless.

I actually fnid it to be the worst cover out of those mentioned cause it stays way too close to the original. It doesn't add anything. IMO a cover is good when it lets go off the original version and makes it the other band's own more or less. So for me Primus' version is by far the best.
