Do band logo's reflect off metal genres?

What I notice is that sometimes I can look at a bands logo and wonder if they are a so and so genre, then I am right about it.

I think it is safe to say that most unreadable logo's are of Black Metal. When there is blood off a band logo majority of the time its Death Metal. But the first time I saw the logo of Falconer, and Angra, I thought to myself, "Power Metal".

Do you guys feel that there are lots of logo's that reflect off of the genre of metal that band plays?

I dont really understand your title to the thread, but i read your post instead.

I think its pretty hard actually, sometimes it seems you can tell, Black Metal is pretty cliche with this. Alot of the times though it doesnt matter what it looks like, alot of extreme bands seem to be using the more 'power' style logos too.

Yep' I got your point, but I didn't got the title, well, I think the logos does not reflect the genre, but the lyrical themes, i.e. a typical BM logo with a inverted cross (or two) and/or a pentragram, reflects that the band has satanic lyrics, but for example Vital Remains' logo has that, but they are Brutal Death.
You'll not see those kind of logos in Power bands.
What about Opeth? when I look the logo for the first time I thought about Gothic Metal, but they are extreme progressive.

yes ofcourse. bandlogo's have a theme that fits in the genre (useally) such as lyrics, artwork

it's also true in case of album covers. it's usually pretty easy to tell whether the album is black/death/power/prog.

99% of the time I agree, to the extent that last year one of my friends that wasn't into metal bought me a Mayhem album just on the logo/artwork as a whole knowing nothing of the band. But notable examples of disagreement in general would be 1349 and At The Gates (later logo).

In general, yes. But there are of course exception. When receiving the latest album of Anti, I was quite surprised with their logo. It looked more like a Death Metal logo to me than a Depressive Black Metal logo (their style). But then again, the cover art, song tracks and album title made up for that.

Yes most of the times I think we can see what it is but its been said before: there are exceptions. I think that the black metal logos are pretty recognizable though. But you can think about it with the names of the bands as well. Some bands you just know they are black metal or death metal but I don't think it is as clear as logos, and necessarily different. Just an example.

I do believe that logo design corresponds with music genre. To explain it more clearly, I'll use some images.

Here is what most thrash metal logos look like.

Here is what most death metal logos look like.

Here is what most black metal logos look like.

Basically, each genre has its own logo characteristics.

In 100% percent honesty - if I were to look at the Morbid Angel logo not having a clue who they were I would be undecided between death and thrash.

Certain genres have definitly developed their own logo-styles. I have an old Sentenced t-shirt with a logo that is different to their latest one and quite unreadable, and some people have asked me if its a black metal band.

I think that it's fairly accurate to say that you can get a feel for the genre a band play's based on their logo design. Funny I stumbled upon this thread as I first get on the forum's today, because I am just scanning my new band logo.

I just did a really quick fill in of the negative space, but this is the jist of it. Need's some cleaning up still, of course. I'm sure it's an easy guess of the genre.

Argh, some of you guys (Americans/Canadians) have shocking English. Plurals and verbs in the present tense do NOT USE APOSTROPHES! It makes you look ten years old.

This logo just above looks very black to me but I also get a hint of folk... is that your style?

Since Insin's thrash metal example isn't showing I assumed it would be Metallica, not Slayer. I've noticed that a lot, I mean a LOT of thrash logos are hugely influenced by Metallica's early one. And about Morbid Angel, that's fair enough - they started off very thrashy anyway.

I can assume that your grammar was implied to me, and presuming so I admit that my typing can be rather dysfunctional. it's even worse I suppose since I am a Canadian-"American" lol.

But yes, you're quite right about the logo as I'd like to think of us are predominantly black metal but we do have some folk-like track's. Funny thing is, I didn't really create the logo with too much of a folk aspect in mind. Or maybe I did without realize it, because I created the two "t's" to look like horn's, since I had Knecht Ruprecht/Krampus in mind.

Horns huh? I actually thought of trees, which made me think of Agalloch for some reason

I can see that, it does look like some sort of tree's and a bunch of root's. As for the grammar again, it's mostly due to myself being lazy... especially on forum's.

I think you can totally tell teh genre by the logo. Look at those Death-Grind-Gore bands. You almost know what to expect down to the vocals when you see the front cover. And like someone said already, Power Metal. Look at Stratovarius and fucking Sonata Arctica. Not saying they're too typical as well, but they definitely, in that genre have distinctive lettering and styles to their logos.

Well I think they do...

Take power metal logos, they'0re angular and sharp, but perfectly legible.
Black Metal... well, you've got a couple examples up here.
Death Metal is brutal but still readable
Gothic has some pretty simple logos too
Avantgarde Metal is amazing, spite the complexity of this genre, tehlogos are incredibly simple... take Pelican or Jesu or Fantomas or Tool...

Maybe logos reflect the style, but IMo only in the most "traditional" genres: Black, Death, Power, Heavy, Gothic. Although sometimes Gothic Metal logos (I'm talking only logos here) confuse with Avantgarde

You can tell what gengre it is most of the time just to look at the logo. As people allready have pointed out, much of it depends of the band image(lyrical themes etc.) However, you further back you go, the logos looks more alike, regardless what gengre it is(Compare the earliest logo of Queensryche with the earliest logo of Venom, for example).

On another note, has anyone noticed how simular folk metal logos are power metal logos, regardless what subgengre the folk metal band belongs to?

Bold letters with not so fancy cursive= power metal

looks like your 10 year old "talented" brother made it by trying to copy a black or death metal logo however he clearly couldnt get even close to, but since your parents told you that you could only be in a band if your little brother played some hole on it= nu metal
