*Clear throat*. It's time for me to provide the high English equivalent explanation of my history listening to metal music.
I'll keep it short; I started listening to metal music eleven years ago, back in 2006. I first received Nickelback's All the Wrong Reasons, then Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction from my mom. After that, things spiraled slowly and I was listening to Guns, then Metallica, then Def Leppard, then Megadeth, then Cacophony (I had also decided to start playing guitar), and many other bands.
I know a lot more bands now, of course, but my first few years of listening to metal were slow, and I acquired my music tastes over time. Now, I listen to a lot of interesting music, including classical and jazz.

I've been listening to metal since around 2009 or 2010. But I have to admit I haven't caught up with new releases in the past three or four years. I'm a bit out of touch nowadays. I'd like to catch up, but then again, there's always a ton of other things to do as well.

I'm old enough to remember the first time I heard "One" by Metallica on the radio. I was blown away, but I really didn't get into metal to the extent I am now until the early 2000's. Whenever it was for sure, I do know it was before Dark Tranquillity had released Damage Done, which was 2002, I think. So...16 years maybe?

I should mention that I wrote December 2015, but I've been listening to stuff like Black Sabbath, KISS, & Metallica since I think 2012-ish.

personally, i discovered metal music in the 90's and i started to buy metal music and reading papers (revues) in the late 90's. Dark Tranquility is one of the metal bands i discovered (the album "Projector").

I got into metal when I heard Type O Negative's 12 Black Rainbows in November/December 2015. That song changed everything for me.

March of 2004 if I recall. So, if my math is correct, like 4 or 5 years?

My dad introduced me to Black Sabbath when I was very young, Probably around when I was 3 or so. But when I really started listening to metal was when I was a kid and Green Goblin was my favorite supervillain at the time, and my little kid mind thought that "If spider-man has a theme song, Batman has a theme song and Super Man has a theme song, what about Green Goblin?" so I asked my dad and he played Down with the Sickness by Disturbed. 19 years old now and that song has a special place in my heart for getting me into metal.

When I was in 8th grade, around '89 or so, I was listening to lame stuff like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. My brother took me aside and said, "this is what you're missing out on," and gave me Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Metallica's Master of Puppets. I haven't looked back since. Then in '94 Details magazine did an article about Death Metal. It was a really stupid article written by a guy that seemed to think that all Death Metal was Satanic, and all Satanic music was Death Metal. So he interviewed Marilyn Manson about Death Metal. I'm not joking, it was that pathetic. Anyway, I had already started listening to some DM, and this article mentioned Black Metal and the stuff going on in Norway. This made me very curious, and soon I was listening to a lot of extreme metal.

Since I was 13. First vinyl I ever bought was Obituary "Slowly We Rot" bought completely blind back when buying a record was a risk because there was no streaming on the internet. 29 years on and I still fucking dig the shit out of that record.

In elementary school I listened to pop-punk, then linkin park, then system of a down. At the beginning of highschool I started listening to a little bit of metalcore and Amon Amarth and ever since then I've listened to nearly all types of 'extreme' metal (I hate that term).
So I guess since I was 12/13 if we don't count System of a Down as 'metal'. I'm 27 now. So about 15 years? Cool, never thought about it. Good thread.

I can remember being 16 and thinking "wow, I'm getting into music late in life", that music happening to be metal, I'm now around twice that age and still getting into new forms of music so maybe my younger self was jumping the gun a bit haha

A little over a year now, so I'm fairly new. Still remember that day in February 2017, when I blasted War Pigs after puling an all-nighter, not fully connected to the real world and half asleep. Music has never before fueled feelings this intense for me. Been a fan since, and looking forward to exploring more metal.

Since 1986 so what's that?... 32 years.
First metal album I bought was Piece of Mind. On a whim really. I just really liked the cover art.
After that it was Deep Purple's Machine Head and Master of Puppets not long after that.

Extreme metal; for 8 years now. I know some of you have been listening to it alot longer than that, but I'm 24 so that's 1/3 of my life so far. I don't plan on stopping either!
I have been listening to 'traditional' metal since the 80s though, I grew up with it.
holy shit I'll be 32 this year. So that makes it going on 16 years now! Crazy haha

I've been listening to metal ever since I was about 16 and I'm 29 now. I didn't get into extreme metal until I was about 24. Grew up in a tiny ass town and simply didn't know it existed
