Keep on calling it Black Metal.A Sub Genre shouldn't be based on lycal content but on the musical style.Following that thought we should eliminate PornoGrind as well

Metalcore.... It just sounds like it should be a "time honored title" for "innovator bands", not to make another form of rock "look acceptable" to metalheads. (My reasonsing is: where I am at there is no distinction between "metalcore" & "screamo". Soundwise I find that they both derive more from hardcore bands with a splash of 80's cock rock riffs for flare.) Nu-Metal.... It's really not metal, just rock with distortion effects. Like I can see how it would.could potentially lead to liking metal bands but I just don't see how it works in with the genre as a whole. (Reasoning:I've seen Nu-Metal like "korn" lead to more hardcore listeners & ironically, also, rap listeners than people listening to different genre's in metal. Also, I noticed that people into nu-metal seem to take "nu-metal" as a "phase" more than as long term listening or a real gateway into the metal music genre in general.) For me it's "let's drop the titles that are there to sell albums to people"/"that are sellable based on public consumption" and keep the titles there that actually have shown growth in some way towards the metal genre.

23.05.2010 - 23:11 Written by Ph0eNiX on 23.05.2010 at 22:46 It's a gateway genre for some, and lasting passion for others. Or both. But I'm really sick of people calling it rock. So, in your humble opinion: just what kind of musical genre is this song? Pop-rock? Trance? Techno? House? Classical rock? Indie? R'n'B? Funk? Looking forward for your input.

Forgive the non"Quote" responce, I just didn't wanna make the window any more "Book" than it has to be. Been a while since i heard korn... I had friends in HS who were down with them and a couple in college. So let's get on with your opinion request (mind you that this is an opinion and I'm not telling you to change your taste in music) for "Ball tongue"......... Personally, it sounds like hardcore with a limited use of guitars that are more noise effects. (This is Korn"Korn" so it's going to sound like this a bit.) Granted, I can tell that for part of the track , it's the lyrics carrying the song's flow and effect. This doesn't hit me one way or the other on a personal level but that's me. I'd say it's like they're stuck in a breakdown for a good part of the song too then start the whole "Chunky predictable korn sound". I will say however where is the guitar work after the chords stop? I then read the lyrics and it's sorta like linkin park in the idea of "My reaction (whatever it is) is justified because I'm angry" or "because I'm sad" but happens to be less linear. I will say in korns defense that it's not as "Whiney bitch" in form. It also has hardcore theme esqe stuff: "You were my brother Where does our friendship end? (x3) You were my... I'm not gonna give in" I don't see now or then why the band had any parental advisory on their lyrics at all... As I recall a lot of bands that came out at the time also did that for sales purposes (Usually by the label putting it there. Pearl Jam 10 had an advisory for the word "Fuck" in the word "Jeremy" for a while. The same way movies try to shoot for an "R" rating). Like they use the words "Dyke" and "Fuck" in the song but you can hear that out of you're own parents mouth or on tv. Not to mention there are bands from '94 (when this korn album came out) that had advisory labels that probably had stuff you wouldn't actually want to let your kids hear. I (As hypothetical concerned protective parent) would be more concerned if my (hypothetical) kids were listening to Cannibal Corpse lyrics off the album "The bleeding" (Also from '94) than this Korn album. Back to Nu for a sec: It's possible that this is a gateway, and as well is likely for some that it was. Great! In all honesty I really haven't seen nu-metal go more than as a phase with people (Like all the old Korn fans I knew got bored with korn when they were "Mtv stars".). Granted, I live in NJ in the US so I can take regional mentality as a possible deal for why I haven't see this last but that is a factor that'll formulate opinion and perception for anyone. Hence why I put my reasoning in. If it happens to be a gateway, hey cool... As stated I've never really seen that. I'm not saying that's impossible. And to your closer: Otherwise can you tell me why or how I'd compare this song to "Trance? Techno? Classical rock? R'n'b? Funk?" ? That stream threw me a bit. If you're rolling for sarcasm (Which I can assume cuz I was just being straight up with my "why" in tow) I could try but this stuff doesn't at all carry like that. Like you could give this industrial remixes if you wanted to... Maybe, if you got the equipment and the time, you could turn this into a tech trance track, possibly a hard house track (Depending if you want to keep the lyrics or not). The funk part... well maybe they use a wa peddle for the music somewhere? R'n'B... Motown totally wasn't thinking of doing this at any point I don't think (Picture the temptations singing with this as backing if you would). I will say that the guitar sound (Like a ghost pony lost in the wind) they have for the 1st 1/2 of the song reminds me of a background sound from Method Man's "Bring the pain". So are limp bizkit, coalchamber (Lil korn) and trapt metal? They came out at around the same time and without korn those bands wouldn't have popularity for those 3-4yrs they did. I think korn was responsible for limp bizkit being signed too if memory serves me right here. I know trapt got their 1 hit wonder due to popularity from touring w/ korn and coalchamber's sound wouldn't really have come from anywhere else other than korn. For me there's also a continuity in metal (Which sorta works like building in Jerusalem does), metal builds on it's foundations to grow and form into something new. Now don't get me wrong, these bands totally sold albums in the 90's but where did it grow to from there? Like you have saliva (Who did that smashing spider man ballad with nickelback) as an attempt at something but that's sorta really it... I also remember that these bands were referred to as "thrash". Not thrash metal, not at all nu-metal, just "thrash".

Well, you put a lot of effort in this post, so I'll try to do the same, despite our obvious differences in opinion. I used this song as an example, because I believe it's one of their heaviest, musician wise. I guess you can draw some parallels with hardcore, since this is the very beginning of the so called 'nu-metal', though it's probably more of a rap/hip-hop characteristic rhythm. Lyrics are angsty, I admit; that's what metalheads often refer to when they disrespect the genre. But it's all misery or hate one way or another. If I listen to a Cannibal Corpse song, will I not find hate? If I listen to funeral doom, will I not find misery? Of course I will. You should listen to the whole album, and then you'd know that parental advisory isn't just a trick. Song like Daddy will certainly help. I am against all kinds of censorship, and yes, I agree with you on the 'fuck' part. I don't listen to hip-hop, but if there's a song I care to watch on MTV, they'll butcher it by muting the words like fuck, cunt, pussy and all the other crap you can hear on the street or from your parents, which is hypocritical and absurd, but that's another topic. I don't really consider Linkin Park to be metal at all, they're rapcore. And I'm not really sure if I consider myself a nu-metal fan at all. Sure, Korn is still my favorite band, but I'm not into that scene like I used to be (if I ever was). I like all kinds of metal: power, alternative, gothic, symphonic, melodeath, metalcore, hard rock, and yeah, the so called nu. Yes, people move on: people often search heavier or lighter music than nu-metal some time after, though it all depends on individual after all. I can't help but to bring up the need for a typical metalhead to detest commercialism, which he/she associates with mediocrity and lack of talent. I for once, am always glad when Korn or and other slightly harder bands gets space on MTV, instead of all that Lady Gaga bullshit, if you know what I mean. That's why I said on my profile very clearly: I don't care about the level of (un)popularity of the band, as long as the music works for me. About the trance, etc. Yes, that was all just a sarcasm, no need to elaborate anything on that. So, yes, I firmly believe that Korn is metal after all, and it's not their fault that the sudden surge of popularity brought them into the mainstream and injected it with thousands and thousands of similar acts that wanted the piece of action while it's still hot. Limb Bizkit is not metal, not by a long shot. They can thank their popularity with the fact that they often stick around with nu-metal label, even though they're not one. Like I said before, nu-metal is the black sheep of the metal community because of all the mainstream it's got, and the fact that it helped to influence the popular culture, which is not condoned by your typical long haired black metal fan. I hardly thing that haters even try to give it an honest chance. So, because of it's status, it's often hard for the bands that are even remotely associated with the genre, to break free of it, and to break free of the negative popularity. Say Disturbed, also my favorite band. When I say Disturbed, you'll no doubtingly think nu-metal, and you'd think wrong, because only their first album is nu-metal, others are plain hard rock/heavy metal. There's a certain tendency in both metal and music community as a whole to 'slap' the nu-metal label on any alternative metal act out there. Here are a few: SOAD, Mudvayne. SOAD has been called a nu-metal band a trillion times, despite the fact that they've never, ever been one. About the last sentence: not sure what to say here really. People who hate it will keep on hating it. Everything's been called trash one time or another. There's not a single musical genre that will satisfy every single human being on the planet.

It's funny how nu-metal's been getting bashed because of it's mainstream but it seems for the most part glam metal, has almost been "forgiven". I don't see too many people bashing Motely Crue and Twisted Sister anymore, although the softer/poppy ones like Poison and Bon Jovi are still regarded as "poser" bands. Actually around in my area a similar thing is happening with nu-metal, with metalheads. The harder nu-metal bands are becoming accepted and the more trendy emocore/deathcore/screamo-metal bands are getting bashed. Anyways the genre titles I don't like would pretty much be the ones where if you take away something that's not part of the sound (ie: lyrics, time/place, etc.) then it wouldn't be called that. Or genres that just get too specific, that it seems unnecessary and ridiculous.

01.06.2010 - 08:46 Written by Kennoth on 27.05.2010 at 13:56 The later two I agree with but I think extreme metal is a good term. It's broad, but not too broad. I'll usually use it when it's not clear if a band is death, black or thrash metal exactly. Extreme metal makes sense because it refers to the actual sound of the music, while white metal and pornogrind are simply about lyrics and nothing much more.

A friend of mine, who's not really knowledged on Metal, thought Living Colour was a Black Metal band. Hilarious as that sounded, it got me thinking: Why call it Black Metal? Kind of misleading. Wouldn't something like Dark Metal or Grim Metal be a little more suitable and cooler?
