what do you all think about these two taboo subjects? in sweden, prostitution is illegal. i think this is wrong. i want a more liberal society. supply and demand should be put to use. people who are against prostitution always gives the argument "the girls are being used by the men". well, thats the same thing as the guy working at mc donalds is being used, coz its a shitty job with low wage. but what if the girl chooses to be a prostitute. then why is it wrong?
the same with pornography. people say "men learn to see women as objects". well, i admit that i've watched porn, but that doesnt make me look at women as objects. its still supply and demand. people are willing to expose themselves on the camera, and people are willing to pay to see the movies.

as long as no one gets hurt, it should be legal

am i right? what do you think?

Coz its not much about islam being strict about pre-maritial sex as much as it is about poverty, illiteracy, and over population. but yeah, religion plays a major part in that too.

Glasgow as the most violent city in industrialised countries ? That seems like a farfetched statement but by all means list your sources. I think Los Angeles and Detroit are to be considered way more violent.
I've read on London and its recent uprise of gang violence and it would seem to me with a much higher population they would have more gangs than your "nightmarish" Glasgow. Of course, per capita would be a different story and you're witness to what goes on within your city so I might be unaware of certain facts...

A UN report in 2005 stated that excluding murder, a Scot is 3 times more likely to be a victim of violent assault than an American. And compared the level of violent crime with cities like Rio De Janeiro. It said that the "booze and blades" culture of the West of Scotland was mainly responsible for the figures. And pinpointed Glasgow as a particular hotspot. Glasgow has a small population compared to those US cities you mentioned, and London, so of course it's per capita. Although a 2008 report stated that Glasgow has 200 teenage gangs, which is more than London has. And that isnt per capita, it meant that Glasgow literally has more teenage gangs than London. 6 times more, if it's on a per capita basis. Another 2008 report, said that per head of population, Glasgow is more violent than New York. Which was once notorious for it's violence levels. The crime figures for 2006-07 showed that for every 100,000 people, there were 731.39 incidents in Glasgow compared to 631.30 in New York.

There is no need to list my sources, these statistics, and findings of these (and other) reports should be very easy to find for anyone wanting to obtain them. Of course, I would say to class it as the most violent city in the developed world, may be pushing it slightly. But its definitely one of the worst. And yes, I have personally witnessed the violence that goes on in my city on a few ocassions. So Im also talking from personal experience, not just statistics.

I would have never thought. The divide line must be wide between the rich and poor and then again it's sort of surprising because I trust that your immigration rate isn't all that high in Glasgow ? (and this isn't a personal attack towards immigrants it's just that they are known to cause violent turmoil).
I guess your economy isn't very good which isn't surprising these days still as of now because of the recession in America two years prior.

The divide line between rich and poor is wide, and it seems like with each successive government, it just gets wider and wider. Gangs in the urban areas of Glasgow are an epidemic. Pretty much every section of these areas has it's own teenage gang. Just within a 3.8 mile radius of where I live, there is about 9 teenage gangs. Including the one that resides where I live. Well, the funny thing about Glasgow, at least in the parts I know of, the teenage gangs are made up almost exclusively, of native white youths. There has been more immigration in the last 2/3 years or so, but still, the bulk of the trouble is caused by Scots youths. In all the years Ive lived in this area, Ive not once seen anyone from an ethnic minority involved in the yob culture. Its always Scots kids/people.

The economy here is awful. And the governments answer to this? To further place the majority of the burden of the cuts on the poor, and the disabled. It's estimated that the very richest will have to pay just 2% of their annual income towards the debt. While the poorest will have to pay nearly 30% of their annual incomes towards it. As impossible as it seems, the worst areas of society are only going to get worse, not better.

What a fail of a plan, that's ridiculous, almost laughable but more sad than anything else. With those kind of differing taxation rates no wonder the problems further extend themselves to the streets.
Something worth reading about though. Your government has to get its head straightened out.

Very realastic scenario in most parts of the world I reckon. I'm currently residing in Sri Lanka and the taxation rates are somewhat similar here. The rich tend to pay a very small percentage of their salary which the middle class and the poor tend to pay exhorbitant amounts and a very large percentage of their incomes.

As for the crime rate, its not the worst down here and definitely better now that the ethnic war is over.

Our opposition party would like a level-based taxation system like in many other countries in the world... that would imply that the higher your income, the more you pay taxes and the less you earn, the less you have to pay...
But our government with the ruling party says that this system is bullshit. It discriminates the rich people who have worked hard their entire life to become rich. The poor people should just shut up, go to school, pay more to get a bit better education (with what money?) to get a better job and to become rich. If you cannot become rich, then it's your problem, stfu...
That's our government's attitude...

I recently saw a newspaper where some lady (some important person) said that "If Estonia wants to become one of the richest countries in Europe (we're actually one of the poorest) then the Estonian people should learn to appreciate and love their elite and wealthy people more because they are who make the country rich."

And the truth is... yes, seems our people love the rich and the glamorous because every hint to improve the poor people's situation is condemned as a populist/socialist/TOTALITARIAN act and lots of people are brainwashed...
And yes, voting's irrelevant... the same dudes always win the elections...

And since it seems to me this is heavily offtopic, then I finally bring in a sentence of ontopic...

Estonia has a problem with prostitution... at some point we were the East-European Bangkok...
And we have the highest HIV-infection rate in Europe... we're actually on Africa's standard...

And all in all... porn and promiscuity in general degrade human soul... the way people are made to think that sexual function is like going to the toil then no wonder nowadays there's so many people having problems on that level, so many divorces, so many... all kinds of negative things...

That's a little strange to my knowledge. In North America the higher income earners pay a higher percentage of income tax and lower income earners will pay a smaller percentage. I don't see how a society can be balanced with the taxation rates that you two were bringing to light. I'm still skeptical but I'll take your word for it.

There'd be no such thing as poverty in this country if the distribution of wealth was fair, and likewise, the taxation. And the burden of cuts. Its not only the scandalous amount of tax that the poor have to pay, the services suffering the most severe cuts, are ones that the vulnerable depend on, and the rich never have to use. The whole way that the system is set up seems to be geared towards grinding the poor and vulnerable even further down, while the rich dont feel any ill effects of it at all...

and no our population isn't small, Egypt is 1,000,000 sq.m and has population of 85,000,000+ and 97% of this population live along the thin strip of the Nile river and the rest is desert (and the city where i live, Cairo, has alone about 25 million people)

so, basically ALL of the women i've EVER seen in Cairo have been harrassed at LEAST once, weekly (most of them get harrassed daily)

It's all equivalent trade at the end of the day.

Prostitutes= women who are PAYED for men's pleasure.
Pornography= In unisex is beneficial to all parties as the men and women who watch it and pay for it are benefitting someone somewhere. As for those who are watching porn for free well...your electric bill still has to be payed :p and who is benefitting from that I wonder? o.0

Prostitution is the scenarios where an individual sells ones self for money. Women, men, there is no difference. There are male prostitutes as well.

As for pornography, it exists all over the world and I agree it benefits both sexes and whoever pays for it. Electricity board pays for electricity here..

I agree to a large extent that they should be allowed to do this profession if they wish. Having said that, it should not be a necessity due to a lack of finances or something. The governments and political leaders have a social responsibility to ensure that the people are given ample job opportunities and reasonable pay in order to not revert to that sort of lifestyle,

You see this is very contradictory, on the one hand you accept that people should be allowed, essentially to do what they want; but on the other you think that it's a lifestyle that should be avoided, and can be done by governments creating jobs.

People should be able to do what they want period. It's our social responsibility to understand that and accept it. Governments can't be blamed for everything lol; they're people too, who have to make moral/social judgements the same way we do.

I agree with the opening post. While I perceive prostitution and pornography with great distaste, I believe that in a "free" society a man should make his own decisions for himself. If a man wants to rent a hooker for the night, let him. If a hooker wants to sell her body for money, let her. Prohibiting a man from something like paid sex is an abridgment of his own free will.

Yeah, but the number of "instructors" is insane nowadays. If you take the ads section in any newspaper where I live, the "personal services" category, and we all know what that stands for, is full of them.

If the police really wanted to sanction prostitution they wouldn't even have to go out on the streets. All they would need is a phone and a newspaper.

Or just to make it legal (I think that is better choice)
