What genres out there do you find completely useless? I think the whole point of this thread back in the old MS was not coming out and saying what you hate about current genres. The point was to talk about sub-genre names that people just make up due to lyrical content, image, etc...

IMO, as Nervel has said... Any genre based on lyrical content or image (Female Fronted Metal/Porngrind) Should not exist as genres should simply describe the type of music rather than anything else, otherwwise it gets too needless and complicated...

'female-fronted metal' it's ridiculous , not because it's with a frontwoman , but because , for example , is Adorior like Within Temptation ? hahaha

there are many sub genres of metal that are fronted by females though...it's just as useless as saying male-fronted metal...Aghora is female-fronted and they're progressive metal...Arch Enemy is female-fronted and they're death/thrash metal...Lacuna Coil, etc, etc...are there any unique musical elements that should seperate any female-fronted band into it's own sub-genre of metal? except for the female vocals, no...

YOU'RE RIGHT! That's EXACTLY what I was tyring to say with my original post. It's NOT a genre but people are constantly referring to it. Go to the arena of the old forum (or possibly new forum already) and there were several polls for "best female fronted band." Also, many people talk about how they enjoy "mostly female fronted metal."

If you question these ignorant metalheads they'll mostly say that they're referring to bands like Within Temptation.... So then say you like "Symphonic Metal"!!!!!!! Jesus Christ... it's getting really ridiculous

@Lyrinan: That's true eh...I remember seeing a 'best female fronted band' thread in the old metal arena...hahaha, now I gotta check the new one to see...Within Temptation as Symphonic Metal eh? Does anyone refer to them as gothic metal?...symphonic gothic metal?...

@Horlequism:
I really don't want to get off-topic and go into a big thing.. maybe we should move this to the Within Temptation thread. (Most people put them - and similar bands - in the symphonic metal category and not gothic.)

Suomi metal,
I think its so retarded how people HAVE to label everything to the point of idiocy, suomi metal is merely finnish gothic metal/hard rock bands having emotional lyrics to what another band in Europe doing the same would be called something else because they aren't from finland....

I general genres that regard places I think is retarded, like Gothenburg metal, which i think should just be in the category of melodic metal.

Well Gothenburg isn't just any melodic metal, it refers to melodic DM which can be quite different.
And though the whole places thing can sound quite stupid there are alot that deserve and should have it. Bay Area Thrash, Norwegian BM...

@Bloody Rain: could you be more clear about gothemburg? I agreed, and still agree with Hellraizer: it's a quite stupid genre. I think melodic DM is the ideal definition, although there are some different bands. But those differences always exists! So what's the next step? Carcass Metal, Cannibal Metal, Fetus Metal?

Gothemburg doesn't work either...you can't have a genre of music for a place...like Bay Area thrash, Norweigian black metal, floridian death metal....

@Horlequism Apparently, most of the place-genres have distinct differences between the sound. For example, Gothenburg metal uses a lot more melody reminiscent of NWOBHM (i.e. Maiden) in their sound, Bay Area Thrash is different from East Coast thrash etc. etc.

But myself, I can't really see the difference. I'm quite affected by genres; positively, mostly (i.e. if I see a band and find out they're a genre I like, I may look into them), and to find similar artists. There are some genres that I don't like (grindcore and most black mostly), and if I find a band recommended to me in one of those genres I may be more cautious about getting their stuff, especially if there's better music I could spend my money on. But 'female fronted metal' is perhaps not as stupid as you think. There are few women who use death growls, so most women in metal employ a soprano vocal style, which can give a sweet or soothing flavour to the music. Whereas with male fronted metal, you could have Matt Barlow to Bruce Dickinson to Johan Hegg to Mikael Akerfeldt (who uses two vocal styles) etc. etc. So saying, 'What's next, male fronted metal' is a bit of an exaggeration, as female-fronted metal, although irrelevant to me, can be used effectively.

But most of all, I hate it when people use about twenty adjectives to describe a genre. Like 'Epic Symphonic Celtic Battle Norse Arysk Black Metal'. Keep it simple! At most, two adjectives (three with metal) is enough to describe it, for example, 'Symphonic Gothic Metal' or 'Melodic Death Metal'. As Chuck Schulidner (may his sould rest in peace) said, 'I hate genres. If you listen to metal, it's metal. I listen to Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, KISS, Slayer, Metallica...it's all metal!'

I think the troll metal... is the lolest in that list... XD when I see people saying that Finntroll is throll metal... I LMFAO... One thing is having genres and add bands in that genres and make some subgenres... but nowadays is getting really senseless... Battle folk metal... omfg...

Troll metal is suppose to be an offshoot of Black, the father of "troll metal" is Shamaatae, who dressed up as a troll and made his music in the name of Pan. The reason for calling it troll metal was because he sang like he was a troll. His vocals are very strange, but his music was just pretty much raw black metal, primitive black.

There are definite genres that really don't say that much about a band. Or genre's that represent the same thing. Like if a band is Melodic Death, whats the difference between that and Gothenburg. The thing is that alot of bands build upon an older formula, but don't quite sound like their predocessors. If you get far enough from something, it really wont be the same thing. There is no reason for genres based solely on image stuff, but ones like troll metal that deal more with some part of the music, be it vocals, or something of that like might sound stupid, but mean something.

As you say too, battle folk metal, to me it seems like every folk band I see sings about battle, so thats like a double negative.

Here's one for you all:

Queercore:

Much as a new generation of gay men and women reclaimed the once-perjorative term "queer" as a badge of pride, honor, and identity, so too did gay punk bands defiantly christened their sexually charged music Queercore. What sets queercore apart from conventional punk is not its music ? which is typically intense, energetic, and raw ? but its lyrics, which explore themes of prejudice, oppression, and same-sex attraction with rare honesty and insight. The best and most provocative queercore bands, like Team Dresch and God Is My Co-Pilot, make records that harken back to punk's glory days, fueled by the same hatred of society's conventions and mores. The difference is that where punk once promoted nihilism and destruction, most queercore records are driven by an overwhelming instinct for survival ? the music celebrates its outsider status, refusing to cave in to the so-called moral majority's myopic definitions of what is right and natural. "Alternative" in the truest sense of the word, queercore is punk at its purest, giving voice to the hopes and fears of those whom the powers-that-be would rather silence.

Explain? Afaik, bands like Korpiklaani, Elvenking, Skyclad or Cruachan aren't exactly filled with war themes. If anything, folk metal has anti-war themes.

Yeah.. Space Metal was never meant to be a genre. Star One released an album called Space Metal and some dumb fan must have thought it sounded like a genre name. Most people know that it is NOT a genre name (including Star One) but every once in a while some idiot will refer to it as a genre

The term SPace Metal was already used way before Star One to describe Hawkwind's music. At the time it was described as Space Rock/Space Metal.
