Written by BloodTears on 06.12.2009 at 15:55 That Nevermore cover is absolutely brilliant.
It is! I also think their cover of Judas Priest's "Love Bites" is immense!
I actually agree with that as well! Immensily catchy and fun.

Some people probably hate this, but I like it
And speaking of Over the Hills and Far Away, it would be wrong not to mention the Nightwish's cover of the song, which is brilliant.

Swedish Geek Metal band Machinae Supremacy covered Britney Spear's Gimme More.
They also do a badass cover of the Great Giana Sisters theme music, but that's not mainstream pop at all.

Geek Metal is not an official genre... I may have just invented it... but it sounds better (to me) than SID Metal, which is the way the band describe their sound. It basically feels like power metal, but they use a SID chip (from the commodore 64) as a pretty prominent instrument on many of their songs. Lyrical themes often gravitate around video games.

Machinae are actually fantastic, I pissed my pants when I heard giana Sisters cover, I lost countless hours playing that game as a kid.

This doesn't quite fall under the definition of cookie monsters, but I think it sounds different enough. Awesome song in both versions:
The same EP should have a few other interesting covers, too. The Cure and Killing Joke, IIRC.

Covers are a loss of space on a CD. Especially covers of shitty mainstream songs, when I always hated the original.
