Hmm, probably a song that everyone knows, has an anthemic feel about it and possibly a fast part somewhere, something like Seek and Destroy, Heaven & Hell, Fear of the Dark, Master of Puppets, Breaking the Law, The Hellion/Electric Eye, Holy Diver, Rock You Like a Hurricane, Crazy Train, Symphony of Destruction, Denim & Leather, You Got Another Thing Comin', Wild Child by Wasp..

i find it pretty difficult from that list to choose anything.. probably You've got Another Thing Comin' but that's just me.

anyway if you want total stereotypical metal though, as in something like, when showing it to someone who hasn't heard metal in his life, something you can say "90% of metal sounds similar to this" regardless of how many people like/dislike the band, like it or not it's Manowar's anthems, they are imo by far the most typical metal band, it doesn't get much more typically metal than Kings of Metal, Call to Arms, Metal Daze, The Gods Made Heavy Metal, Return of the Warlord or (of course) Warriors of the World United.

To a lot of people, it's probably Paranoid or Iron Man.

Melodious
Painkiller. That song best sums up the term ''heavy metal'' more than any other for me.

If I had to pick one song to represent metal as a whole from a modern standpoint it would have to be The Final Absolution by Anaal Nathrakh. The song is extremely brutal yet melodic, savage yet majestic, and the execution is flawless.

A song that represents Metal...I would have to go with either Impaler by Paragon or Nemesis by Arch Enemy. If the listener doesn't like those two songs then maybe a more classic song like Metal on Metal by Anvil

Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name

Painkiller would be a good one also as well as Jawbreaker or The Sentinel from Judas

Should it have screaming?

I personally think yes, and would go for Meshuggah's Bleed. That riff has to be the hardest piece of metal ever to pass through my ears. If someone was to ask me for a song that embodied metal, I would play them bleed. Plus it's experimental, dark, Jens has an amazing voice, drums are amazing, and it has the second most frightening clean section ever created (losing out to Unas, Slayer of the Gods).

Using something like Maiden or Metallica is fine, but it is the kind of stuff that gets emphasised, I wouldn't mind something a bit less typical, or a bit less well known. Using something like Painkiller, which has a bit less exposure, would be better, especially since you still get that heavy metal reputation that Judas priest carries with them.

But still.

Bleed.

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

Metal Warriors by Manowar

Come on, it's a song about metal and metal heads, and being brothers of metal.

"HEAVY METAL!! OR NO METAL AT ALL!! WIMPS AND POSERS LEAVE THE HALL!!"

Buuuut, that song might be a bit cheesy for some, so, a few of my other choices would be..

Exodus's Bonded By Blood (It's fast, brutal, catchy, and it's about metal and again, being united under metal music)

Testament's Into The Pit (just because is'a fucking amazing song)

D.R.I.'s Thrashard (Again, amazing song, about moshing and kicking ass)

Metal Church's Ton of Bricks (Just listen to it and you'll know why)

(this is excluding some of the other songs other people have mentioned with which I agree would be great songs)

Yeah I can definitely agree with Master of Puppets or Hallowed be Thy Name for sure!

As for a song that represents the more extreme side of metal, maybe Hammer Smashed Face or Entrenched by Bolt Thrower or With Strength we Burn by Emperor....there are wayyy too many great songs to choose from! But yeah, any of these will work for me.

Agreed to Emperor

anyways, if you mean stereotypical as in what the general public thinks Metal songs are like, then (Debauchery - I Will Rape and Murder) would be what fits best
should your stereotypical song be one that should create a positive image, then it should be either something with wonderful melodies (Dekadent - Beautiful Fire) or something the average listener can recognize as complex compared to what (s)he usually listens to (Insurrection - Fracture)

Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name

Amen. As far as I'm concerned the most perfect song in metal history.

Though to represent the more atmospheric, melancholic side of metal, I'd choose In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion by Agalloch.
That's a 12-minute journey through life, death and existence itself.

How about Hangar 18. The music is good and for those who care about the lyrics its non satanic with a degree of substance in its tale. Surely a reasonable showpiece from ages ago.

Ugly Kid Joe - Heavy Metal. aside from the title it doesn't have any lyrics, and it's 25 seconds of tremolo picking and double bass madness. the most stereotypical metal song

I'd go with perhaps:
(subject to interpretation)
Good Melodeath which would preferably mix harsh and clean vocals.
Gothenburg
Good Metalcore which mixes vocal styles.
Various Classics...Despite us mostly being stereotyped into that.
