In Flames - Part Ways With Guitarist

The following update has appeared on In Flames's official website:

"Jesper Strömblad, guitarist in In Flames has decided to leave the band permanently.

He had this to say - 'I have decided it is best for me to leave In Flames and to quit the band permanently. The last 17 years have been a blast, and I am proud to have been part of this great journey, with the most talented and amazing people anyone can wish to have the privilege to work with. I'm also the luckiest guy in the world, to have the BEST fans in the world, who have been supporting me during my difficult times. It means the world to me, and I'm determined to fight and defeat my demons once and for all.... and by the help from you guys, I'm on my way. I'm far from done with music, metal, or whatever my direction is taking me, so be sure to hear from me in the future.

...May the Force be with you!'

Anders, Peter, Daniel & Björn commented 'We are losing a great guitar player and musician, but in order to keep a very dear friend this is probably for the best.

If this feels right for Jesper we are behind him 100% on his decision.

It is way too early to speculate about the future and possible replacements and things like that. However, we can assure you that In Flames will continue as a band, release albums and tour the world.

The door to In Flames is always open to Jesper. We are, and will always be behind Jesper 100% on his way to recovery.'"

First Equilibrium and now In Flames. What a bad start at 2010.. Jesper will definitly be missed and he's was the one of the main parts that made IF so awesome to see live. That energy will be gone for sure.

That is the end of the decline of In Flames after a pair of pure pieces of crap like their last two albums were! I don't think his personal problems are the only reason behind his departure from the band, especially since he wants to continue making music at a professional level. Maybe he wasn't happy at all with the new direction the band has taken.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In Flames will never be the same from now on.... So saaaad.....

What do you mean they wont be the same?? They havent been the same for the past 10 years now! This is a great move, whether it is because Jesper is an alcoholic or not its a good decision. Maybe some of the other guys should do the same...I suppose you can only play shit music for so long before you start getting fed up with it. Their music was revolutionary in the 90's so Im actually surprised it has taken so long for someone to leave the band.

Good on you Jesper, you show those fuckers...

it would be better to try to influence the band in a way that it was the 90's... than quit! anyway his situation is understandable!

Jesper is among one of my favorite guitarist.... i like old In Flames and new, i think the whole old and new thing and people arguing about it, is really stupid, bands change sound over time, its going to happen. I just wish the best to Jesper to his future and maybe we will see him back with in flames in a few years or so, or even in a new band.

I completely agree with you!!! Not evolving for a band maybe transform it to sth boring and recycling!

(...), don't know what addiction or personal problems he is going through, (...)

Alcohol. Brings a lot of personal problems along as well, especially with heavy touring etc.

I'm gutted by this news, but I must say it wasn't much of a surprise. Jesper already cut a couple of months for rehab and if he didn't recover mentally to the fullest, this is probably his way to cut out most of the problems.

It is sad to see that the last founding member of In Flames has to go and along will most undoubtly go their chance of releasing a pre-clayman sounding album. Best case scenario would be if they got a guitarist who isn't afraid to pull out some heavy melodic riffing and solo's, which will be missed with Jesper gone.

That being said I think it wouldn't be a wise decision if they split up because of this, they have a lot of potential but they should do it the right way. Their next album will probably be all or nothing for the appeal to their older fanbase. If this fails, they pretty much have lost all dignity.

Maybe its for the best, because Jasper is a really great guitar player, and the fact that he was playing in a band that makes so awful shitty music nowdays... well its just a factor that doesnt benefit him anymore, by the contrary. I really think he made the right choice. In Flames nowadays is a shadow of its former self unfortunetly...

Personaly,i think its really fucking upsetting that jesper left the band.but even more so than that, that a pheck load of morons keep commentig shit like in flames "died before clayman".

well do ya know fucking what?
if you think that why the fuck are you on the page shit for brains!!

in flames have been my favorite band for the past 7 years now and i love all their stuff new and old.they are completely in a league of their own and their music has changed since the 90's yes but if you dont like that......dont listen.and once more dont bitch about it.
jesper will be missed terribly, and i just hope that whatever he's looking for he finds it and hopefully someday finds his was back to in flames.

the band wont be the same without him.
may the force be with you jesper

Well, things like these happen. But looking to how many line-up changes they've gone throughout their existence is kindda easier to dig his departure. Look at their page on this site. Way too many guitarist changes (like three in eight years) and way too many session musicians.
Great band though. Wish them best of luck in the future.

They were not the same after Clayman. Maybe that's good, maybe that's bad - it is a matter of taste. I prefer the Maiden-like self-repetitive discography, you like their semi-metalcore era with false vocals. It's OK.
