Is metal a homophobic genre?

I'm gay. And I'm a metalhead to the core. Paradox? No, not if you consider the fact that sexual orientation actually has nothing to do with personnality. Ghaal is gay and he freaks most people out because he looks like a demonic murderer. Yet, I come across homophobic comments like ten times every fucking time I visit this website.

So, I wonder if metalheads are homophobic. What do you think?

PS: PLEASE avoid gay-bashing, I'm trying to have an intelligent discussion, here. If you can't be open-minded, go back to the 18th century.

Due to metal being a "macho" genre, there will be a fair amount of homophobes and misogynists as there are many people under the impression that bashing gays and dominating woman makes a person more "manly" or something.

Metal....homophobic?
The man we call the heavy metal god (Rob Halford) is gay right
The lether and stud fashion comes from the gay comunity
If we are homophobic....then we are also in denial

Metal as a whole isn't homophobic, however I would stay away from nu metal. For homophobia and quality's sake.

Metals are not accepting people. Yes, it is a homophobic genre - metal men are all about being masculine and drinking beer and burping

I personally don't care about the sexual orientation.

That's right, but I don't think that metal as a whole has any conception about it.

Hey Metalomorphis, that's awesome that you're open about it! Metal is not a homophobic genre. I think that most metalheads don't mind gay people at all. The ones that do are usually elitist jackasses that no one likes anyway.

Well, i got gay friends and get along with them, no problem at all.
They are very nice people. And they aren't that gay people who shout to the world they are gay, act like a cocaine junkie, jumping around and trying to show thenselves with the most bizarre atitudes... They just normal guys (and girls) who like the same sexual genre...
Don't see that as a problem or anything like that. Just don't like the strange ones, not only gays, but straighs too... I don't know if i'm beign clear...
But, well... i don't think metal is homophobic, just some doochiebags.

Being camp (if that is what you're meaning) has zero to do with femininity. I don't see why so many guys seem to have such an issue with guys being effeminate. (note: not feminine! ) If that's the way they naturally are, then what's wrong with it? It's not as if they're hurting anyone or anything...

That's why I said "they can bahave as they wish". I don't see anything negative about it. I just don't understand why some gay guys feel the urge to dress like parrots and walk like whores. Being attracted to other men doesn't mean you should act like a woman parody.

Maybe because that's what they want to do? I can see what you mean, but women "walking like whores" is just as bad as men doing it. And I find women who do the whole "talk to the hand girlfriend!" type thing, just as annoying as when camp gay men do it. But you're right, they can behave as they wish. I don't see camp effeminate behaviour as being in any way feminine though.

Yes, that is what i meant.
I once worked in a company and that was a guy who as gay. When you saw and talk to him you would never say that he is gay.
His behavior was of a normal people. Them there was one day, when the people were delivering their curriculuns to try to get a job on the company. There was this guy, a very... parrot womam parody, just like Metalmorphis said (I can't stop laughing at your definition man, it's very funny! ).
My gay friend said: What a faggot. Can't handle figures like that. What hes thinking... Be gay but be a man dude!
And i said back to him: But man, you are gay too...aren't you?
He said: Yes, i am. But i do not need to walk like i was in some kind of carnival or beign a neon advertisement.

I laugh more than ever that day (sorry the words )!

Well... i think they can act/dress anyway they want. But it's real shite when u are with your girlfriend or family and you see someone (Not just gay people, but anyone, heterosexuals, homosexuals, catholics, muslins, black people, jews, asians, indians, aliens, demons, anything...) making a big scene, and doing annoying things.
Well, don't know if everybody, or anybody, will understand my point. But it's my opinion, can't help about it.

I agree with u Angelic Storm. Except for the part of effeminate. If a guy is effeminate and gay is because he wants to be a womam, and if he wants to be one he got to act like one. Dress like a real womam and act like a real womam. Shit!
If he is only effeminate and not gay, go listen to poison and start a glam rock band! Shit twice!

(The shit and shit twice was not for you Angelic. It was for the strange ones... Maybe i should wright a song about it... )

I don't think that effeminate gays want to be women. lol If they really wanted to be women, you'd think that they'd act and behave the way that most women do. Which they don't. I'm a little bit tomboyish, but that doesn't mean I want to be a man, or that Im "aping men". If you think camp gays are a female parody, would you say that butch lesbians are a parody of men then?

Hehe, I knew that the "SHIT!"'s weren't for me. As for the 80's glam bands, some of those guys got through more make up in a week, than I've probably worn in my whole life, and looked more like women than me! Which frankly is very depressing... lol

Well, but you known, there is a lot of difference between an "tomboyish" girl and a masculine girl.
I once dated a "tomboyish" girl (In the ages i was a sk8 boarder ) and she was NOT trying to be a man... i can say that...
But! Like i said before, i, maybe, sometimes get a bit confused.

To sum it up, some people, man or woman, behave in a way that does not necessarily fits with their gender's model, a model mostly defined by culture. By their very nature, some men aren't as virile as you might want them to be and some women are tomboyish. Everything all right up to now. But some of them (men) REALLY exagerrate their behavior, maybe because they are particularly extraverted and/or feel free to be like that since they're overtly gay and gay men aren't expected to be virile...

And yes, as a gay, I think "what a faggot" when I see one. He can be what he wants to be. But when you're gay and you fight against stereotypes and judgement, it's hard to accept that some gay guys actually fit those stereotypes perfectly...

I don't entirely agree with you. Yes, there're many men that fit the stereotype of drinking beer and burping but lets face it, a lot of metalbands members use make up, and not the scary-worshiper of satan type, but the eyeliner-half androgynous type. They want to look femenine, I think you have to be tolerant to do that...

Bands are a completely different thing

I would say that the music and the bands themselves are not homophobic with a couple of exceptions from the black metal community. However, the less mature metal fan might be prone to using homophobic slurs in order to bash someone's musical preference. I wouldn't blame metal music for any anti-homosexuality, but rather society as a whole. After all when words like "gay" are used so often in a negative connotation it makes people prone to use those words, even if they don't actually hate gay people.

Another thought. For guys, calling someone else gay is challenging their masculinity. (not that it really makes you less of a man to be gay) Since Metal is a genre so based around masculinity, those words often end up coming up with negative connotations in regards to manliness. However when you look at the undying admiration of all metalheads to Rob Halford, it is hard to say for sure if Metal is a homophobic genre.

In conclusion, metal fans as a whole are not homophobic, they are just very keen on masculinity. I don't think that most metal fans have a problem with gay men as long as they act like men (once again Rob Halford)

Interesting question
