My question to you all is, have you ever heard an album or song and wondered how you 'got by' in the past not knowing of the music in question? For instance, you discover a band and you really love the music they make. You wonder how you enjoyed music in this way before you made this discovery.

I think this is only possible in hindsight as you don't know any better. You can't think, "Wow, I can't wait to discover this amazing band and have them completely reinvent my outlook on music!". But I find, when I hear a new band or song which I really love, it contrasts with everything else and makes it seem pretty, average.

I don't even know what I am talking about here.

yeah for me its Turisas, whom I discovered about a year ago (give or take a month) and almost everyday since has had a heavy flow of Turisas songs....I really need to know what I filled my day with before I discovered that band.

Found about them a year ago...and obviously started listening to them too. At that time I wasn't into hard rock/glam metal...and just started finding out bands by myself, so it's not that bad after all

Really? well, then believe me, you'd be impressed by the huge amount of people here that don't know them...they're pretty unknown here, which is a shame

bands I discovered properly in the last year that I really really like (not necessarily couldn't live without though) include:

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter (thanks to Wacken, Almu and Promo)
Sabbat (thanks to Bloodstock and Marcel)
Heavenly (thanks to Hellfest and Ilham)
Testament (thanks to Bloodstock and Thryce)
Wuthering Heights (thanks to Susan)
Falconer (thanks to Bas)

theres probably some more that I have forgotten - but these are my favourites I have got into so far this year

I wonder how I lived without this thread, it has existed for a year now and I noticed it only ten minutes ago. Seriously!

As for me, the band's got to be Therion. They're not the most underground band, but somehow it took ages for me to finally discover their music. As I listened to Sirius B it was quite a revolution considering that lately I haven't been as much excited about every new band as I was about five years ago. Therion have released such an extensive discography and each album has convinced me that I should have had grown listening to this since the very beginning. Already their recent album is my personal favorite (in the metal category) of the year 2007, so this shows the band is still very strong and I highly respect that, for a band that's "supposed to have seen their best years". I just can't understand where the hell I've been before 2005.

One thing I have really been listening to a lot is Shining, the latest two albums. Since I bought those two in April, I think I have listened to at least one of the each day. (with a short pauze for about two weeks maybe, but seriously, but the other days, every day!)

I really agree with the original post. Sometimes when I listen to a new band I truly just wonder how I could have ever survived without them. But then again..soon I will find another band like that and the previous one will seem average once again like the rest of them. I must say though..a good album will never get old.

Alice in Chains got me through difficult times for years...and they still do. I can't even remember what life was like without one of their songs in my head all the time. Even though I don't listen to them as much anymore, they remain my favorite band of all time. I can honestly say that they saved my life on several occasions.

For me it was only 3 months ago when I heard The Scorpians. I always knew them, i mean they're one of the most famous hard rock bands ever but I never really gave them a try. Wow when i listened to the song Big City Nights, it made a lot of really good metal bands that I liked look like crap . I liked Hard Rock before i found The Scorpians, but now i LOVE the style, and i got into probably 30 other hard rock/classic rock bands because of The Scorpians.

i'd have to say pagan's mind. i'm pretty picky when it comes to power metal because of cheesy lyrics and such, but this band made me second-guess the genre. without a doubt this is my favorite band. period. i just recently found out about them (a month or so ago) and i don't think i've played anything but their cd's in my car since then.

i'm not sure how that pertains to "getting by" without knowing about them, but i had to confess my obsession with them as of late...

That "How did I get along without listening to this?" experience for me was in high school when I saw Metallica open up for Ozzy Osbourne. At the time, I was listening to the metal that was getting some airplay, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Preist, etc., but the thrash that Metallica was putting out was something totally new. I had heard of them, but had not yet heard them. That show blew me away, and the first thing I did the next day was get myself a copy of Master of Puppets (on cassette). To this day, it is among my favorite albums of all time.
